volume 66 — number 23 tuesday january 11,1955 basso jerome hines and his accompanist alexander alexay left discuss with mrs hines a score used in hines brilliant performance which captivated a large scl audience friday evening group requests alcohol in center 1,600 cheer hines's spell-binding show bread together but he was not to get away that easy sixteen hundred people refused to stop their clapping of hands and stamping of feet until he had sung seven encores and he would un doubtedy still be singing in grace hall much to the pleasure of the audience if he had not announced before starting his seventh encore that "... though i would like to continue this must be my last num ber old man river the song of the volga boatman my friend plus two french ditties were among the seven encores several of these songs required no small dramatic skill and hines in the absence of a setting any more inspiring than that of a basket net and glass backboard hanging over his head and any cos tume more original than his black tails exhibited a grand dramatic talent adjectives fall fiat when it comes to describing the voice that belongs to jerome hines and only those in attendance know what many others missed there were only two disappoint ments in the entire program — in termission and the end of the final encore one location which in its basic form is of no advantage to the student serving of alcoholic beverages the question of whether or not alcoholic beverages would be permitted in the proposed university center appeared on approximately 75 per cent of the returned questionnaires this committee studied the problems and offers the following com ments 1 since many banquets are at present held in establishments where alcoholic beverages can be purchased there may be a reluc tance to use the new center for banquets if no alcoholic beverages are allowed however we feel from our discussions with other students and faculty that if the food is of top quality and at reasonable for stu dents prices there will be no prob lem and the students will choose the new center for their banquets even with the stipulation that no alcohol be served 2 parties present another prob lem many organizations consider alcohol as a must for a party without this the committee feels that many organizations will con tinue to go off campus for their par ties the committee therefore feels that alcoholic beverages should be allowed at parties by petitions and that the granting or refusing of such petitions should be on the same ba sis as that for fraternity houses and residence halls student opinion favors this idea actually the drinking problem is an exaggerated problem here at lehigh it is a matter of the presence of alcohol at the part ies and not the excessive drink see social page 5 following is a condensed version of the report of the sub-committee on student social facilities this is one of five reports submitted to the student activities committee for re view in order to aid the administra tion plan the university center the major portion of this report concerns a study of the social needs as they stand at the present time it is the thought of our committee that this should only amount to a mini mum of the social functions to be held in the new building and that the building should serve its most important function as the stimulus of an expanded lehigh social pro gram it must be remembered that there are many social functions that were once held at the uni versity that have been dropped since the facilities on campus have become inadequate an ex ample of this would be the dance of the engineering society this committee would also sug gest that the university plan some type of a weekly social program this would possibly take the form of a saturday night dance with re cords for music no formal program need be held ony a place and faci lities need be supplied so non-fra ternity students would have a placr 1 to take dates after a movie or ath letic event at the present time the non-fra ternity man and often the fraternity member has no place to go after a saturday date except to drink at the fraternity house or some taproom in town unless the university takes some initiative with an expanded social program the new facilities will serve no good purpose except to concentrate the present functions in aaup to hear panel debate on some thought the administra tion was passing the buck down to the heads of the living groups these are the opinions ken collin 56 president of off campus alpha chi rho told us that the memorandum will have its ef fects he said that in his house where about 23 out of 28 are under age there some who wouldn't enjoy a party without drinks this new ban if enforced would drive under age men out of the house on party nights to the town bars which serv the under age but they are more likely to get into trouble he thinks the university is only taking the responsibility off its own shoulders the deans will know from the party petitions said col lin if the houses are serving alco holic beverages to minors and they will check up this he thinks will lead to closed parties collin said he just didn't know what to do about rushing he said the frosh will come in to the house for the party but will have to go home sometime the solution he thinks is to keep those who have drunk too much in the house over night rather than letting them go back to the dorms cops will be watching he thinks alpha sigma phi president ken depew 56 said the house members had discussed the problem and think that as long as everyone stays sober everyone can be served they don'l want to drive men out of the house into the public bars which they say is not good he thinks rushing will be severely affected but won't take it out of alpha sift's house if the rule is enforced he says fra ternity men could contact recent alumni and their influence might cause the deans to ease their opposition ed kottcamp 56 treasure of
