total of 1,110 valentines were issued this semester with 2,605 students enrolled in the undergraduate school this fall 42.6 per cent received mid semester reports of failing grades distribution of valentines was arts 130 business administration 231 chemical engineering 66 chemistry 13 civil engineering 58 electrical engineering 55 engi neering physics 27 general science and mathematics 2 general col lege division 3 industrial engi neering 69 mechanical engineering 111 metallurgical engineering 36 mining engineering 14 and fresh man engineers 295 only four college newspapers are rated above the brown and white in its class according to the 51st national newspaper critical service of the associated collegiate press which awarded the brown and white a first class honor rating ratings were based on the spring semester of 1954 rated equally with newspa pers at such schools as north western southern methodist and temple the brown and white has received first-class or ail-american awards for many years it has also won trophies for su premacy in local advertising in 1935 1936 1937 and 1942 and acp all american honor rating in 1935 and an intercollegiate newspaper as sociation class a trophy in 1942 delegates from lehigh and six other colleges are pictured here in informal group discussion part of the annual fall meeting of the le high valley intercollegiate student government conference held in drown hall wednesday night wlrn is host to 18 stations representatives from 18 college radio stations will convene here to morrow for their fall regional con ference of the middle atlantic re gion of the intercollegiate broad casting system the program includes a business meeting tours through wlrn and a banquet at the beethoven maen nerchor the committee on student government came to several conclusions in connection with methods eof elections powers see spirit page 4 by doug koch the lehigh valley intercollegiate student government conference held its semi-annual fall meeting last wednesday evening in drown hall six schools were represented — lehigh muhlenberg cedar crest moravian centenary junior college and another college at easton a general discussion was held at 7 p.m when topics were brought up for special consider ation by the various committees the meeting adjourned for an hour and a half at 7:30 to permit the committees to work on in dividual subjects refreshments were served before the final phase of the conference which included committee reports the committee on student conduct was mainly concerned with the problems of drinking town rela tions and disciplinary policies some of their conclusions were 1 drinking should be legalized with enforced restrictions 2 there should be more cooperation between town and the 1954-55 theatrical season curtain time is 8:30 tonight and 7:30 tomorrow night heading the large cast is rob ert o'brien playing the part of detective mcleod the hard boiled ccp who was portrayed by kirk douglas in the film ver fion of the drama the play is a story of how this righteously in dignant pursuer of evil tries to be not only a policeman but a judge and jury all in one it is told against the kaleidoscope background of a detective squad room in a new york precinct station dcnald j smith creates the role of endicott sims a lawyer attempt ing to defend schneider an illegal practitioner who is played by ken kaminker helen search has the part of mcleod's wife trapped by his discovery of the flaw in her past gene murphy plays a lovable irish detective callahan while thomas griggs william keen and robert morgan will be seen as some of mcleod's more humane fellow detectives caspar kaffke has the part of the hard-headed lieutenant in charge of the squad robert silverton and glenn maggio play the pair of cat ' burg jars walter briggs portrays a decent young man who has weakly stole money from his business to spend on a heartless girl he loves the girl is played by rose marie navarro arthur anderman merle letowt john v thompson samuel cornell harold gingery raymond norman din jay russel and rose ruth round out the cast santa matt to star at soph snowball 32 seniors named for who's who thirty-two lehigh seniors were named to appear in the 1955 edition of who's who in american col leges and universities students were selected by the heads of the various curriculums leadership and participation in extra-curricular and academ ic activities citizenship and service to the school excellence and sincerity in scholarship and promise of future usefulness to business and society were the criteria of selections who's who is a publication rep resenting approximately 630 colleges throughout the united states le high's selections were donald h dimmick william streamers in commemoration of the 100 th anniversary of the birth of john philip sousa america's march king the lehigh university band will be host to directors and students repre senting 20 high school bands at a music clinic to be held in conjunc tion with its annual christmas sea son concert this sunday forty high school musicians and their leaders are expected to come to the campus for a
