dixieland combo provided the music forty alpha sigma phi alumni attended their cocktail and beer parties saturday alpha tau omega reports that 30 of their alumni were present for a cocktail party before dinner follow ed by a beer party beta theta pi claimed 35 of the many alumni that swarmed the campus they held a meeting sun day morning and were entertained at a party saturday night chi phi listed 25 alumni at their campus residence chi psi holding alumni weekend entertained at forks valley tavern before the game followed by a buffet dinner at the bethlehem club about 55 alumni were present delta chi reports that 10 alumni returned to that house delta phi also reporting 10 alumni present listened to a dixieland combo delta sigma phi had 24 alumni at their cocktail party before the game by tom kelly featuring the traditional pep rally bonfire and fraternity dis plays prior to the 90th consecutive football game with a little-known easton college lehigh's undergrad uate body staged its annual late november festivities last weekend building interest to a fever pitch for the 1954 season's final game freshmen began collect ing assorted bits of tinder for the annual bonfire bonanza early last week throughout the week dormitory sections stood guard duty over the collection see easton page 5 of wood in order to turn back the expected invasions by eas ton ruffians while the frosh were preparing their giant conflagration lehigh's 30 fraternities were busy assembling their traditional beat the opposi tion displays for the second year in succession phi sigma kappa fraternity emerg ed victorious in the interfraternity council's contest their huge repro duction of the battle between the whale and the squid from the mo tion picture 20,000 leagues under the sea was judged tops in the competition sigma chi and chi phi tied for second place chi psi was third and delta upsilon came in fourth throughout the week lehigh thanksgiving recess will begin to morrow at 10 p.m and extend to next monday at 8:10 a.m following thanksgiving vaca tion comes christmas recess which extends from saturday dec 18 at 1 p.m to monday jan 3 at 8:10 a.m all requests for special considera tion over the recess because of post office jobs or similar seasonal em ployment are to be made at the dean's office as soon as possible these requests should be made well in advance of the christmas recess a written statement from the student's parents or guardian attesting to the financial neces sity of the student's christmas employment should accompany the request special consideration will not be given where any of the following conditions exist 1 the student is on scholastic or disciplinary proba tion 2 the student has received two or more mid-term reports of failing grades 3 the student has accumulated an excessive number of absences dean wray h congdon stated that each request will be given in-j dividual consideration by bill le clere lehigh's engineers closed out their 54 grid campaign with a disas trous 46-0 loss saturday to an underdog eleven from easton pa the nameless victors tallied in every quarter playing predominantly a run ning game led by byron satterlee and dan mccarthy hard-running enemy backs the engineers found it rough sledding defensively as the oppo nent's backs had a field day particularly on their off-tackle plays enemy passes consisted solely of running tosses dependent upon their ground game to make lehigh defenders come up swiftly this allowed opposed receivers to free themselves the other school's grid representatives were led by an assorted number of hard running halfbacks and fullbacks including the above mentioned satterlee and mccarthy who were joined by slotter brown dion and sayenga in the scoring parade statistics show a slight edge for the winning team in rushing the brown and white picking up 20 yards rushing while they managed to gain 330 yards on the ground the engineers did equal a re cord lu quarterback tom gloede tying dick doyne's total offense record of 1055 yards set in 1950 gloede playing in his last game for the brown and white fell two yards short of joe scanella's indi vidual passing record for one season set in 1949 harry stotz lehigh captain and fullback who played consistently good ball for the engineers all sea son took the opening kick-off back to the other team's 41 yard line it was a brilliant opening for a dim ending on the part of the lehigh gridders the engineer attack stalled there and dave walters punted into the end zone the enemy taking over on their own 20 exacty 14 plays later the score was 6-0 not in favor of lehigh a fellow by the name of mccarthy carried the ball six times in this drive and climaxed it with a touch down dash from one yard out the first quarter ended with le high driving under the reins of sophomore quarterback john moyer the brown entered enemy territory going as far as the 34 in the first frame two plays later tom gloede's milling crowd of pajama-clad students which gathered about the mo-mo campus after their annual march across the penny bridge gillespie to provide music for sophs snowball dance matt gillespie and his orchestra will be featured at the snowball dancel for the sixth consecutive year sponsored by the sophomore class the dance will be held in grace hall on saturday dec 4 from 9:30 to 12:30 dance tickets which cost 2.25 are being sold throughout the dor i mitories and fraternities immediately after thanksgiving there will be a ticket booth opened on the first floor of christmas-saucon hall dance tickets may also be purchased in a package deal with mustard and cheese's detective story which will run from 7:30 to 9:30 the same night and will cost 1 the package price of 3 will save the purchaser 25 cents there will be a coat check concession and various soft drinks will be sold by members of the sophomore class cabinet phil stromenger and pete cooper are co-chairmen of the snowball
