assessment due nov 12 the deadline for payment of the senior class 12 assessment has been extended to nov 12 included in the assessment are an epitome through the senior class the senior dance picnic during spring semester class reunion to be partially fi nanced by this fund and a joint reunion with the class of 05 the class of 55 urges all seniors to cooperate by contacting james gleckner theta delta chi don dimmick phi gamma delta dean castor chi phi or mrs moravec in drown hall as a special feature of the fresh man football game with lafayette next saturday a weighted group of men from the frosh class will vie against a contingent of the easton men of 58 in the annual tug-of-war in taylor stadium if the big tug is won by le high's team all freshmen will be allowed to remove their dinks for good men who will repre sent the frosh were chosen from each living group there were two regulars and one alternate chosen from each section of freshman mass being the prime factor the men were selected with this as the main reason the tug-of-war will take place during halftime of the contest on the playing field a committee was picked to supervise the arrange ments for the battle members of this group include george barr tom chamber land bob croneberger jack harding bob hartman don hofmann bob kaslander phil lotke hans muhler sted sweet and carl wrick in connection with the big lafa yette weekend nov 19 and 20 the freshmen will give skits the fresh man cabinet representatives are in charge of getting their respective groups organized each living section must present a skit which will depict something in relation to lafayette weekend the skits will be judged and the finalists will portray their particular contri butions at the pep rally at its second meeting last monday evening the freshman cabinet chose two important committees to serve this year these groups were the publicity committee and the constitution committee members of the publicity group are dick gaintner chairman jack hobby phil lotke and bill nilsson those who make up the constitu tion committee include ed bartlett jack cahill sam fornaro bud im mel ralph scalzo tom shaver and ray turner priorities have been given to the university center and the 300-man dormitory rather than other projects in lehigh's 100 year plan in order to attract better types of students to the campus at an earlier date by providing residence and social facilities to match lehigh's academic reputation although great progress has already been made in this direction said dean congdon many students of a better type have turned down coming to lehigh because of the lack of these facilities when construction on the uni versity center gets underway next spring the entire interior of packer hall will be gutted and a steel skele ton will be erected to support the roof and outside walls this opera tion similar to the one carried out in rebuilding the white house two years ago will enable the original architecture of packer hall to be preserved — although the cost will approximate that of constructing an entirely new building the walls of the building will bear no weight since the interior structure will be supported by a steel cantilever type of construction all plans will have to be com pleted by feb 5 if the building which will retain the name packer hall is to be ready for use by september of 1956 under this accelerated schedule ac cording to president whitaker there will be some temporary inconveniences some classes will be moved out next spring and the rest next fall enough facilities are available to tem porarily accommodate the class es and staffs now located in packer hall the administration after consul tations with the architect has abandoned preliminary plans call ing for the construction of three floors to replace the two now exist ing in the east wing of the present building and the establishment of faculty quarters on the west end of the third floor there have as of yet been no de cisions made on where to place the classes now in packer hall what is to be done with drown and lam berton halls what kind of a staff will be in charge of the center or whether students will be required to pay for board along with the charge for their dormitory rooms eckhardt polio victim improves in hospital dick eckhardt 57 who contract ed polio a month ago is reported to be progressing as expected he has regained partial use of his left arm although his right arm and both legs still remain paralyzed currently undergoing physio therapy at st luke's hospital dick would welcome visitors dick has asked for donors to re place the three pints of blood given to him from the st luke's blood bank students giving blood should specify that it is for replacement of that used by eckhardt soph snowball again features matt gillespie matt gillespie and his orchestra will again be featured at this year's snowball dance in grace hall dec 4 it was announced wednesday night at the sophomore cabinet meeting the 14-piece aggregation which has played for the snow ball for the past five years will entertain an audience expected to reach 350 couples straight dance music a jazz concert and a mambo band comprised of members of the gillespie orga nization will complete the eve ning's program recent engagements of the gil lespie group include appearances at cedar crest the university of pennsylvania and a jazz series at hershey park dance tickets which may be pur chased in a package deal with mus tard and cheese's detective story or singly will soon be available tuesday consisting of 12 and a half hours of class lecture and four seminars this week makes his sched ule the heaviest of any previous guest lecturer dr nash will deliver four lectures to senior advanced afrotc members on is communism a religion and interpretation of his tory he will lecture to all sections of biology 13 on science and the president whitaker big tug with lafayette to decide dink removal by art roth allocation of space to allow use as near 100 per cent of the time as possible is the philosophy governing the planning of the university cen ter according to a speech by president martin d whitaker at the student faculty discussion sponsored by odk thursday night in packard audi torium president whitaker also repeatedly emphasized that there are a great many details yet to be worked out since there are no detailed proposals except those shown on the architect's sketches however the plans for the cafeteria the white cloth dining room the coffee shop the kitchens the faculty dining room the student and faculty lounges the university book store and the storage room have pretty well been determined nothing has been fixed in the field of student organization accommo dations said dean wray h congdon we will have to know what you the students think about the distribution of space priorities and equip ment we will of course be glad to listen to your ideas on the other fa cilities but you must realize that those decisions must be made largely by the experts he said after the information concerning the needs of the student organiza tions has been gathered by the sub-committees and analyzed by sac the recommendations will go to the architect who will draw the final plans commensurate with these needs insofar as possible creator of man what is man and an explana tion in the social sciences are the scheduled topics of dr nash's lec tures to philosophy 15 and 281 classes religion 1 and 6 classes will hear dr nash talk on the bible as god's revelation and the socio logical understanding of religion the place of liberal arts in a technical education will be dr nash's topic for civil engineering 160 history 331 will be lectured to on the place of science in the history of man a faculty luncheon and seminar is scheduled for tomorrow to take place at lamberton hall with dr nash as guest speaker it is possible for any student to attend one of dr nash's class lec tures by asking the class instructor's permission personal appointments to see him may be made at the chaplain's office in drown hall this is the first year the inter faith council has scheduled speakers for both the fall and spring semes ters this spring a jewish and a roman catholic leader will both lecture on campus rotc marks 35th birthday 1,405 enrolled boasting a record of 1,511 commis sion winners in the past 34 years lehigh's reserve officer training corps program is observing its 35th year of operation with an enroll ment of 1,405 undergraduates although the rotc program at lehigh did not begin until 1919 the idea for an officers training program for college students was conceived in 1913 gen leonard wood informed eastern colleges and universities that the army was setting up an experimental military training camp at gettysburg in the sum mer of that year at those sum mer sessions 160 students repre sented 59 colleges with the larg est delegation from lehigh in 1919 under the leadership of dr henry s drinker fifth president of lehigh a military unit was es tablished on south mountain when the national defense act became a law in 1920 this unit became a branch of the national rotc pro gram now an integral part of the aca demic program the rotc course is divided into the basic course cover ing the first two years and is re quired of all lehigh undergradu ates with the exception of band see botc page 5 .' lehigh university brown and white whooping it up in front of drinker house after motorcading around town are some of friday night's pep rally participants providing the music and serving as a focal point for the rally is the group from sigma alpha mv which can be seen standing at the top of the picture on their truck later in the
