houseparty dates from dravo house has prompted the residence halls council to make use of sections 4a 4b and 3b in richards house over 425 dates are expected to be housed in the residence halls many of which have al ready been assigned rooms rooms will be ready for occu pancy at 4:30 friday at which time students must be moved out of their quarters the dorsey brothers who appear ed in a television series this sum mer are expected to attract the largest audience in many years in their lower floor appearance in grace hall friday night an esti mated 950 couples are expected to be on hand lending vocal support to the dor seys aggregation will be lynn rob erts and bill raymond miss rob erts whose musical talent and per sonal charm have delighted dorsey goers for some time is expected to chirp the old dorsey originals bill raymond who has ap peared in buster crabbe's water ballet and sung with a number of name bands will also melodize with the dorseys now 23 years old the good-looking vocalist will sing many of the dorsey favorites as will beauti scouts of the bethlehem area are shown above forming a flag with the lehigh band at the rutgers game saturday this was part of the scout explorer day program which attracted 1,200 scouts to the campus explorer scouts from a radius of 75 miles of the university took part in the program sponsored by alpha psi chapter of alpha phi omega scouting's national service fraternity scouts toured the campus during the morning the tours conduct ed by apo brothers included demonstrations by the civil engineer ing department tau beta pi national engineering honorary frater nity chemistry department physics department and pershing rifles big brown ruins rutgers by 33-13 lu bethlehem pa news ist prize won by b&w for 2nd year volume 66 — number 10 tuesday october 26 1954 for the second year in a row the brown and white has walked off with first prize in the national news writing contest sponsored by pi delta epsilon national honorary journalistic fraternity top honors this year went to frederick j warnecke arts 55 for his story 4 lams gambol which recounted a hazing in reverse prank pulled by pi lambda phi pledges judges for the contest were erwin d canham editor the christian sign-up starts for williams debate contest tom gloede lehigh quarterback scores lehigh's first touchdown on an option play inside his own left end gloede went on to direct the brown and white in their 33-13 upset of the scarlet of rutgers this play came early in the second quarter by pete hynes fund drive starts soon for center new dorm at the first meeting of the packer hall-dormitory fund-raising com mittee stewart j cort announced that special gift solicitations would be made this fall in various sections of the country to secure special rooms and gifts toward the 2,200,000 objective while general area cam paigns will follow during 1955 and 1956 cort 06 vice-president of bethlehem steel company was named special gifts chairman by t h mueller president of ju lius kayser and co campaign sparked by tom gloede's direc tion of coach bill leckonby's new wide open offense lehigh rolled over a favored rutgers eleven 33-13 before 8,000 spectators in taylor sta dium saturday the decisive victory a credit to both the team and the coach es marked the successful begin ning of lehigh's quest to retain possession of the brass cannon symbol of middle three su premacy before the first quarter was but a few minutes old it was evident that coach leckonby had brewed some thing special for the visitors the brown and white received the opening kick-off and drove from their own 27 yard line to the visi tors 44 at that point lehigh un veiled for the first time this season a spread formation with gloede in the lone deep position between this passing formation and the reguar split-t attack gloede engineered his team to the four-yard line a scoring pass to harry stotz was nullified by a back field in motion penalty and rutgers held on the next play as the quarter drew to a close stotz quick-kicked from the rutgers 45 to their 4 on the first play of the second period the hard driving forward wall of lehigh broke into the visi tors backfield as the ball was changing hands the resulting fumble was picked up by alex masilowsky on rutgers 16 from the spread formation see engineers page 6 chairman cort has been chairman of the university committee on annual giving for the last three years dur ing which time the fund has in creased more than 300 per cent and the number of donors has more ihan dergraduate students are eligi ble to participate except previ ous first place winners and stu dents with intercollegiate debate experience since this is a competition be tween living groups each group may enter as many two-man teams as it wishes again this year each team will participate in three rounds of debat ing held one night a week for three weeks the two teams with the best record after the third round will compete for first and second prizes registration begins today and will continue tomorrow and thursday from 8 a.m to 4 p.m in room 315 christmas-saucon hall topic for debate is resolved that the federal government should subsidize the higher educa tion of superior students round one will be held monday nov 1 round 2 monday nov 8 round 3 monday nov 15 with the finals on farm editor for the columbia broadcasting system warnecke's story was similar in some respects to that of wesley f willoughby 53 which copped first prize last year the likeness is that both stories concerned pledge proj ects which ran afoul of the law while warnecke's story had a happy ending in that no one was in jured willoughby's story was about two theta kappa phi pledges who overturned their borrowed foreign sports car returning from a pledge project in quakertown one of the men malachy murray received a fractured skull in the crash warnecke the son of bishop frederick j warnecke a lehigh university trustee was the brown and white's police re porter at the time of the pi lambda phi pledge incident commenting on the award prof j b mcfadden faculty adviser of the brown and white and the le high chapter of pi delta epsilon said naturally we are pleased warnecke won it was a good story so we submitted it hopefully i am sorry our editorial entry did not re gister with the judges
