computed at the end of each semes ter and each summer session in this way a student will know at any time just where he stands in his progress toward the final cumu lative average required for gradua tion the averages required are gradu ally stepped up each semester to in sure steady progress of the mini mum-achiever towards the mini mum graduation average a student who falls below these cumulative averages may be putting himself in a position where it will be practic ally impossible to overcome his defi ciencies and raise his final cumula tive average to the standard requir ed for graduation . . for example a student of the class of 57 who has made semes ter averages of 1.00 0.98 1.12 and 1.00 before this rule goes into effect next semester would need to make a semester average of 2.70 in his 1955 fall semester to stay off probation if he made a scholastic average of only 1.50 for the 1955 fall semester he would go on scholastic probation and would need to make a semester average of 3.0 in his 1956 spring se mester in order to stay in college if a student's poor grades are due to being in a curriculum for which he is ill-adapted and he transfers to another he may get some measure of relief under the new rules the subjects in his former curri culum cannot be counted toward the see failing page 3 if you fail to dedicate your ever growing powers to their widest possible ministry he said you will have missed the profoundest joy in life and your intellectual ability will never attain its crowning glory dr poteat calling for culture said a holy war against shame and hypocrisy is the only weapon needed he also called for courage and a trained mind he urged the audience to give a joyous hospitality to truth no matter from what sources it comes and called for a willing ness to give others the right to their opinions however widely they may vary from ours con tinuing he said today he re quires your allegaince not your arguments your concentrated and devoted talents not ortho doxies your hearts not your creeds nine degrees were presented by the college of arts and science by dean robert p more in the col lege of business administration 14 candidates were presented by dean carl allen twenty candidates were pre sented by prof loyal v bew ley for college of engineering degrees fifty-nine candidates in the graduate school were pre sented by dean harvey neville graduation honors announced by dean wray h congdon went to gregory long 54 and bruce triysch 54 in addition 58 freshman honors and 75 sophomore honors were announced the william h chandler chem istry prize was awarded to paul e klinedinst jr 55 john r hille gass 57 and samuel burkhardt 58 alumni junior prizes award ed to students enrolled in each of the three schools were pre sented to michael j lange and david s sidikman both in the college of arts and science celebrating the kick-off of the 1954 campus chest drive the annual charity ball will reward student donors in grace hall's upper floor this saturday popular lee vincent and his orchestra have been signed to provide music for the affair for a 3 donation a student is eligible to receive a free tic ket to the ball since saturday is also parents day parents of student donors will be admitted to the dance free of charge as a special feature of this year's charity ball the campus chest fund committee will select a pair of lehigh parents who will reign as king and queen of the ball the honored couple will also receive gifts the proceeds of the fund drive to be collected by student solicitors will be apportioned in the follow ing manner 25 per cent to the le high scholarship fund 10 per cent to the united negro college fund service lee vincent see ball page 5 10 per cent to the bethlehem com munity chest 5 per cent to non-stu dent appeals and the remaining 50 2nd polio case is false alarm richard l eckhardt 57 who was 1 admitted to st luke's hospital oct 1 for treatment of polio is reported in fair condition and is now out of the iron lung david w dietrich 58 feared a victim of polio was released from st luke's saturday oct 9 the richards 3-b resident en tered st luke's under polio ob servation oct 4 his section mates were injected with gam ma gloubulin to prevent the polio from spreading if any was present upon release from the hospital dietrich left for his shoemakers ville pa home to rest he is expect ed to return to lehigh tomorrow volume 66 number 6 tuesday october 12 1954 duo to present numbers from gilbert and sullivan lu bethlehem pa give hospitality to truth - - poteat gen percy l sadler leads the founder's day processional into packer memorial church sunday where 102 graduates received de grees pres martin d whitaker and founder's day speaker dr hubert m poteat head the presidential party directly behind sadler founder's day exercises sunday were highlighted by a commencement address by hubert m poteat professor of latin at wake forest college dr poteat pointed out the ingredients of the intellectual adult they included the habit of feeding the mind and soul with good things which is culture the habit of doing one's own thinking which results in independence the habit of deferring final judgment until all evidence has been examined which is tolerance and the habit of ministry which is altruism new pro and drop rules go into effect next fall helen roberts and richard walker a series of scenes and songs from a number of gilbert and sullivan shows will be enacted by the famed duo singing team of helen roberts and richard walker at 8 p.m fri day in grace hall the program will be presented in conjunction with the students concerts-lectures series and students will be admitted by showing their identification cards tickets for employees and faculty members can be secured for 1 at the registrar's office or at the box office on friday eve ning complimentary tickets will be given to students parents arriving in bethehem on friday these tic kets can be secured upon the pre sentation of the green application blank which was mailed to all par ents on oct 1 miss roberts soprano and walk er baritone will wear costumes which were used in the original doyly carte productions in lon don both of these great vocalists have previously appeared with the doyly carte troupe their appearance here will be their first in a series of tours to various colleges and universi ties throughout the nation dur ing the past two concert seasons they were acclaimed by capacity audiences in australia and new zealand miss roberts was originally train ed for the grand opera in italy she played soprano leads in don pas uale tales of hoffman and pag liacci with the glyndebourne opera company she also appeared in the doyly productions several seasons ago on broadway she did very well in fill ing the roles of elsie in yeomen of gado and mabel in pirates of penzance see operetta page 4 the award was divided between thtm in the business school the award was presented to allen a stein carl h albright and alan e green er both engineering students also received the award the williams junior prize in eng lish composition was awarded to charles h petersen first place george d frankel second place and kenneth kaminker third place the american chemical society award was presented to paul e klinedinst jr the wilbur scholarship prize awarded to the highest ranking sophomore was awarded to paul e zillessen david a diener won the alpha diefenderfer award given to the highest see 102 page 5 lee vincent to play for charity ball proposed new probation and drop rules which will become effective sept 20 1955 have been released by dean wray h congdon the purpose of the rules is to maintain higher standards of achievement for the students at the lower end of the achieve ment scale and for the earlier elimination of the indifferent or incapable student under this new system scholastic progress and good standing are easily identified by the student's cumulative average which will be brown and white
