in the dorms it was felt that this might be a better method of clearing snow than the present method of putting salt on the snow intra-murals playoffs are going to take place in their appropriate sea sons if possible last year the play offs in football were not completed until late spring cars that are parked in the uni versity parking lot at the corner of brodhead and packer ayes with out an appropriate university stick er displayed in the windshield will rceive tickets from the university police chest funds aid numerous causes world university service will re ceive half the proceeds of this year's campus chest fund drive which will open monday co-chairmen buell a miller ! and eugene c murphy an nounced that the remainder of the funds will be distributed as follows 25 to the lehigh j scholarship fund 10 to the united negro college fund 10 to the bethlehem community chest and the remaining 5 to non-student appeals the purpose of the lehigh schol arship fund is to give financial aid ' to needy and deserving students some of the worthy non-student causes include red cross cancer fund march of dimes and heart fund assisting miller and murphy with the campaign will be cecil w bent ley publicity paul e yeaton pub icity assistant henry petri treasur er and robert f balestier secre tary those members of the general staff who will aid in the drive include j benjamin reinoehl john b chuhinka louis m soars c roger shoch joseph j hersch robert f zecher donald s spitzer j peter hynes richard w shaffer da vid h fenton richard l glass berg and ralph w hamilton the fourth annual reading con ference to be held in packard audi torium tomorrow will be addressed by dr donald d durrell registration for the meeting will open at 8:30 a.m and the general session is scheduled for 9:15 president martin d whitaker will welcome the delegates introductions will be made by dr harold p thomas head of the department of education and director of the bureau of education service chairman for the opening session will be dr john cartwright superintendent of al lentown schools dr durrel dean of the school of education at boston universi ty will speak at the morning session and the luncheon the discussion-type conference is to help define the role of the ele mentary school teacher the second ary school teacher and the adminis trator in planning an effective read ing program dr durrell is appeal arcadia reported at its wednes day meeting that 18 freshmen were caught with cars on the campus last year before they were officially per mitted to have their cars on the le high campus all 18 students were given the university penalty of not being allowed to have a car for an ad ditional semester one of these 18 students was caught last semester with his car on the campus and has received addi tional penalties he has received three disciplinary demerits and can not have his car on the campus for another year i freshmen were told not to wear cyanide picks 1 rher 4 greeks from juniors to lehigh university students one of the aims of student life at lehigh university is that of provid ing experiences as nearly approximating those of mature citizenship as is possible a recognized force in the shaping of the american scene has been the community chest idea in which a sense of responsibility for the less fortunate prompts the financial support of those agencies dedicated to assisting the needy such giving has a two-fold value it not only aidsi those who merit support but yields rewards in terms of character to the donor we are fortunate that a tradition has been established on the lehigh campus wherein students give of their own time and money to promote this avorthy ideal in the form of the campus chest its objectives are worthy and its record has been a proud one for the
