epitomes were sold during last year's campaign photography for the yearbook is being done this year by merin studios of philadelphia studio photographers will be on the campus from oct 11 to the 22 and again from nov 8 to 19 all but 20 seniors have been pho tographed those 20 may still appear in the yearbook if they contact al barstow at un 7-4241 complete cooperation is needed from the presidents of all living groups and those heading the vari ous campus activities during octo ber and november when the pic tures will be taken there are more than 200 different groups to be pho tographed a new method of processing medi cal excuses the campus chest drive unauthorized parking and vehicles accosting of lehigh men by local hoodlums and the 1954-55 budget were the main topics of discussion at the 241 st meeting of arcadia wednesday evening in drown hall gene murphy chairman of the campus chest committee an nounced that the campus chest drive will start oct 11 and will culminate with the charity ball on the night of oct 16 the 16th is the day of the gettys burg football game and the bullets student body have been invited to the ball it will also be parents weekend and the parents will be asked to be guests at the game if they make a 3 contribution to the chest murphy also said that this year every undergraduate will be con tacted for a contribution the goal for this year is 3 from each student or an average of 3 per person from each living group as part of the festivities for the weekend apo will sponsor an ugly man contest the winner will be presented with a convertible full of blondes between halves of the football game stan corbett chairman of the health service committee an nounced that medical excuses will now be cleared through the dean's office the procedure will be the same as before except that the student will pick up his excuses at the dean's office in stead of at the health center this is on a trial basis and its main purpose is to save time which dr c o keck used to spend each day going over the medical excuses the health service committee will investigate the new system which went into effect yesterday to see whether it is a help or hindrance to the student several of the arcadians com plained about the parking situation it was felt that the problem near the see arcadia page 4 browsing room raided vandals net phonograph the entry of a group of vandals into drinker house saturday night where they broke up furniture in several rooms was reported today by residence halls director philip b woodroofe in an attempt to explain the vandalism woodroofe said damage in dorms occurs be cause boys don't know what to do with themselves and officers are away on weekends an extensive painting and general repair program which will cost the university about 63,000 has been started in an attempt to make the residence halls more livable woodroofe said that the program should limit delinquency with the provision that living group govern ment and students support the proj ect wholeheartedly the better living conditions will help to unite men in the dorm sys tem woodroofe said the renovating program in dravo house has progressed to the point where 25 rooms and lounges have been completed students are given a choice of blue green or tan colors for their rooms in richards and drinker the proj ect includes refinishing of desks and other furniture replacing of old bed springs with air foam mattress es and adding an upholstered aasy chair to the rooms students al though supervised will paint their own rooms deans require gunslingers at lu to register the regulations governing the possession of firearms in living groups have been re emphasized in a bulletin issued by the office of the dean of students the possession of firearms explosives and weapons in liv ing quarters on campus or any place on university property is prohibited two exceptions to the rule are 1 for legitimate hunting between oct 15 and christmas vacation 2 for organized team or group activity officially approved by the dean of students the student possessing firearms under these two provisions must also file with the dean of students the following information 1 a current pennsylvania or new jersey hunting license number the license shall also be presented at the office of the dean for inspection 2 a statement that he has read understands and will abide by these regulations 3 the make model type calibre and serial number of bis gun see firearms page 3 by tom kelly new evidence of vandalism in the library browsing room has prompt ed prof william h schempf head of the music department to alert campus and local police in an at tempt to check this type of offense which has plagued the music de partment for the past few years in the most recent violation a would-be thief damaged the speaker cabinet of the browsing room's radio-phonograph con sole sometime between 3 pan monday and 10 a.m tuesday apparently attempting to steal the speaker the intruder had removed the nuts and washers from the back of the cabinet when he was inter rupted prof schempf believes in jamming on the back of the cabinet he punched two holes through the speaker diaphragm prof schempf stated that the ton al quality of the machine is impair ed and replacement will cost ap proximately 100 also reported was the theft of a privately-constructed two speed recording machine stolen from the browsing room be tween june 10 and aug 15 the apparatus is of plywood with a reddish-brown leatherette finish in a carrying case resembling a suit case its dimensions are 16 by 16 inches and its worth 132 prof schempf urges anyone with any knowledge of the offenses to contact him either personally or anonymously the old . . . student body it is our understanding that houseparty should not be imperiled in any way by the action of a few students last semester houseparty has been a tradition at lehigh for many years we feel there is no valid reason for abolishing a tradition enjoyed by many for the mistakes of a few at lehigh as at other colleges and universities the students who have committed such crimes and they are crimes have been dealt with severely these men should serve as an example to others who at times foolishly think that they can go against university regulations the men who were found guilty have lost all privileges of houseparty at lehigh and stand very little chance of enjoying such a weekend at any other school there are always some individuals among those admitted who are undesirable and no type of screening can keep them out of an insti tution as large as ours most of these have been weeded out of lehigh the rest have a moral obligation to themselves and the school to see that another situation such as the one last spring never arises again any potential offender must remember that he not only places himself in jeopardy of losing houseparty privileges but also invites public dis grace those who abide by the rules do not deserve to have the privi leges of houseparty taken away from them arcadia epitome sales soar as book shapes up sales of the 1955 epitome have shown a sharp increase over last year's it was announced wednes day approximately 575 yearbooks have been sold compared with a to tal of about 450 at a the same time last year seven hundred fifty-four the new look in the dormitory rooms makes them much more at tractive in addition to the new furniture many dorm students are being given a chance to have rooms painted in colors they desire drinker vandalized in midst of renovations
