lehigh university bethlehem pa tuesday september 28 1954 campus additions to cost 2.5 million alter concessions proposed end to soph squeeze . . . architects sketch of proposed new student recreation center reno vation of the old structure and construction of the annex will cost about 1,570,000 a game room activities rooms dining facilities lounges and a store are planned lehigh section in south stands short reveals a new system oi awarding residence halls concessions to its residents was announced at arcadia's final meeting last year under the new system the arcadia concessions committee agreed to give up control over concessions in the residence halls to the newly formed residence halls council successor to interdormitory council the new system provides for equal distribution of profits among all concessionaires with a cut of about 10 per cent going to rhc for social affairs and improvements in the residence halls benefits of the new plan include wholesale purchasing which gives a cut in price and centralization providing for quicker action upon com plaints the old system provided that displeased customers talk to the ar cadia concessions committee now dissatisfied persons can discuss their grievances directly with rhc which can replace a conces sionaire over-all control still rests with the arcadia committee since rhc must report to it each semester and also keep its books open to arcadia complaints that are not settled by rhc can still be brought before ar cadia's concessions committee rules regarding tickets and seat ing for this year's home football games in taylor stadium have been announced by paul e short as sistant director of athletics 1 students may obtain one re served seat by having his id card punched and buying at least one additional ticket at full price 2 a student id card that has been punched will not be honored and no tickets may be redeemed after 5 p.m thursday prior to the game an employee's id card is good for his own admission only 3 male employees of the univer sity may obtain tickets for their im-t mediate families permitting them to sit in the student-faculty section they must pay the tax 4 all tax tickets or student ex changes must be picked up before 5 p.m friday preceeding the game only one reserved seat ticket will be accepted for the lehigh-lafayette game 5 married students may obtain one tax ticket of their wife this ticket is good only in the student faculty section 6 there will be no north stand seating for students or faculty this year lehigh seating will be in sec tions f g h ef fg and gh v.^v.v.™v.^w:-x : o:*:o:o:.*.v/a'.vwov new 830,000 residence hall to be erected next to taylor hall above the new health center the 300-man capacity structure will permit demolition of tempos and have adequate accommodations for upperclass men who wish to live in dorms parking area at front will compensate for taylor hall lot on which the new structure will be built dr martin d whitaker president of the university announced that the new dormitory and the renova tion of packer hall will cost an ad ditional 2,200,000 to the funds pres ently on hand this was announced at the opening convocation of the 88th academic year held wednesday in packer memorial chapel the trustees have approved a cam paign to provide for the construc tion of a new dormitory and the re modeling and building of an addi tion to packer hall estimated cost of the new dormi tory to accommodate 300 students is 830,000 renovation of packer hall and the building of an annex to provide a modern university center will cost approximately 1,570,000 total cost of the two build ings will be 2,400,000 however toward this the trustees are able to apply only 200,000 from an emergency fund which no long er exists and other sources an advance gift solicitation in 20 areas this fall will start the cam paign general campaigns will be conducted in alumni centers all over the country during 1955 and the program will probably conclude with a general campaign in beth lehem in early 1956 tentative plans for the new dor mitory and the renovation of packer hall have been designed by jens frederick larsen university archi tect they will be of native stone construction to harmonize with the architecture of other lehigh build ings the new dormitory will have a central section 92 feet long by 40 feet wide two wings each 40 by 110 feet will accommodate the students the building will be four stories high located opposite the student health center now under construc tion a large lounge conference room and offices recreation room re see p.h to be page 3 billy sheridan retires after 43 years on south mountain billy sheridan assistant director of athletics and for 41 years wrest ling coach at the university an nounced his retirement sept 14 billy first came to south mountain in 1911 from the university of penn sylvania he is a native of scotland against the finest teams in the country billy's teams won 222 lost 82 and tied seven dual meets since 1927 lehigh teams have won 13 eastern intercol legiate wrestling association ti tles — more than any other rival in the circuit of 16 colleges known as the dean of wrest presidents of all the lehigh fraternities held its third annual meeting last saturday at ross common manor in the po conos discussion of problems that the various presidents have en countered was the purpose of the meeting they ranged from fraternity responsibility to the university school government and the dormitories in relation to the pledge and the observance of social regulations dean wray congdon at a dinner presented a paper on the participa tion of students in university gov ernment he explained that the stu see ifc page 3 360 students receive 295,000 in grants scholarships totaling 295,495 have been awarded to 360 undergraduates for the coming year according to dean wray h congdon a total of 62,050 has been award ed to 95 incoming freshmen and 82 sophomores will receive financial aid totaling 59,000 grants to 88 seniors total 58,017 lafayette men jump gun on campus raids a group of lafayette students were released on bail early satur day morning after being arrested on a charge of stealing signs from the lehigh band bus shortly before the band left for charlottesville va the stu dents fled with the signs taken from the sides of the chartered bus campus police pursued them in their jeep and recovered the signs in a battered condition which the students had tossed from their car at packer aye and new st after a long chase the campus police finally apprehended the la fayette men just off the campus be hind packard lab brown and white volume 66 — number 2 university center . . .
