dravo and tempo residents now have the opportunity of choosing their room color schemes for next year according to philip b wood roofe director of residence halls cards will be sent to dravo stu dents offering them a choice of blue green or buff color paint for their rooms students living in tempo may paint their rooms any color they de sire as long as they obtain permis sion from the residence director in order to complete the job more economically the university has hired a new painting staff the new staff is composed of men employed by the university during the regu lar school year since woodroofe assumed his po sition as director of residence halls he has been successful in developing the system to suit the needs of more students it is believed that this is the first time that students have been able to choose the color paint desired for their rooms this week woodroofe is attending a residence conference at cornell the purpose of the conference is to exchange ideas with other dorm di rectors concerning the operation of a dormitory system the statements of the university's disciplinary committee accompany ing the suspension from the university of 10 students for their conduct during the 1954 spring houseparty weekend makes it clear that the con tinuation of houseparty as a tradition here at lehigh is in jeopardy the committee specifically called attention to the fact that the con duct of the 10 made them guilty of abusing the privileges and jeo pardizing the continuation of houseparty weekend the report of the suspension of these students was contained in a sum mary of the committee's actions for the spring semester released today by dean wray h congdon chairman the summary shows that action was taken by the committee in the cases of 78 students involved with it the 10 who were convicted of suspensive conduct during houseparty weekend received suspensions varying in length up to june 1955 and dis ciplinary demerits as high as eight ten demerits carry recommendation to the board of trustees for perma nent expulsion all demerits are cumulative their transgressions included 1 unacceptable residence hall citizenship 2 participation in illegal drinking in residence halls during houseparty weekend and 3 in the cases of one freshman and one sophomore bringing an un chaperoned lady into a men's resi dence hall system another spring houseparty inci dent involved one sophomore who was reprimanded and warned for inconsiderate and unruly conduct in the residence halls during house party weekend in two incidents involving hazing or near-hazing 31 stu dents were disciplined in one 23 pi lambda phi pledges were warned and assessed one disci plinary demerit for publicly removing automobile license plates from several cars consti tuting an infraction against state motor vehicle regula tions the complete summary follows for cheating in a final examina tion denied credit in the course suspended from lehigh university until june 1955 and assessed three disciplinary demerits one junior for falsifying engineering draw ing plates denied credit in the course and assessed three 3 de merits one freshman tor dishonesty or attempted dis honesty in an academic exercise see cheating page 3 pleasant and then some . . . a rare opportunity to attend lehigh university in the nation's capitol washington d.c will be afforded this year to as many as four top-notch undergraduates in the college of arts and science known as the washington semester the program will provide those selected a chance to observe national and international affairs on the scene for a complete semester all the while they will be enrolled in the college of arts and science here and racking up lehigh credit hours proposed by the arts college committee the washington semester was approved by the faculty in june it will take effect immediately their action makes lehigh the only participating institution in this area although the washington semester makes possible a first-hand study of government at the seat of government it is not limited to govern ment majors any superior junior or senior in the social sciences or humanities may apply the program is the result of a cooperative agreement with the american university where the four lehigh arts men will spend a semester in residence according to dr r john tresolini associate professor of political sci ence appointed liaison representative for the washington semester the program is designed to produce better citizen leaders in a democratic society which rests on the active and intelligent participation of the in dividual under the washington plan each student sees the intricacies of opera tion of the national government and meets the people who make ad minister and judge the laws of the land the objectives of the washington semester are developed through a five-fold curriculum l.an undergraduate seminar on american national government in action this meets three times a week students are brought into inti mate contact with the broad range of governmental and political activity through field visits consultation with officials and evaluation sessions 2 an individual project this is defined in consultation with a stu dent's lehigh adviser and is refined after he arrives in washington this is designed to give the student a depth understanding of a single political problem or governmental activity 3 six to nine semester hours of courses at the school of social sciences and public affairs of the american university these classes usually meet at night to allow government employees to attend many are taught by specialists from the various government agencies 4 guided extra-curricular cultural and political activities these are worked into the student's program as much as possible 5 a coordinating manual the student's documentation of his wash ington experience all arrangements to take part in the washington semester are made here at lehigh including the payment of tuition a student will pay the regular lehigh tuition the university handling the details dormitory residence at the american university will cost 90 for the semester students will be selected by the faculty upon the basis of their scho lastic achievement at least a b average cumulative and readiness and ability to do independent work although they may be majors in any field they should have had at least the basic courses in american gov ernment and one or more courses in history sociology or economics the idea of the washington semester was first tried in 1947 with six schools participating by 1953 the list of colleges had grown to 48 with both men and women students attending in the past high government officials have willingly taken time from busy schedules to help in the washington semester program both with students as groups and in individual projects according to the arts college committee the list of white house staff judges legislators newsmen public administrators and others who have given individual counsel to washington semester students is long in some instances the arts committee reported members of congress and agency officials have arranged for a student to have practical work experience in their offices for the semester the child should be in a group which is challenging but not frus trating said william bartholomew supervisor in the department of ele mentary education pennsylvania state department of instruction in discussing reading with elementary education workshop teachers the speaker illustrated through an actual demonstration with a child the levels of read ing instruction as teachers would find them in a typical classroom we know that the good teacher child needs challenge says bartholomew to workshop will teach reading in groups be cause children mature both physi cally and mentally at different rates bartholomew said the state department representa tive pointed out that the typical fourth grade teacher will find a range of reading abilities for in structional purposes from possibly the first reader level on through the sixth grade level it is important that teachers base their judgment upon definite criteria for placement in a reading group bartholomew said as may be viewed above tuesday's temperatures were a bit too warm for indoor classes assistant pro fessor of education a gordon peterkin and his class specialist for counseling pupil personnel and works program u.s office of edu cation washington d.c told mem bers of the guidance workshop last week i am disturbed that not enough of school guidance pro grams start with a basic philoso phy of education and often the guidance worker does not iden tify himself enough with the teacher the specialist said he defined guidance as embracing all phases of the school which help the individual student to develop to the maximum of his ability lack of team work in the schools teacher shortages increase in the number of 17 and 18 year olds in our high schools inadequate education and school dropouts were some of the trends which mr miller who has just completed a tour of work shops throughout the country found to be predominant in our nation in discussing the first trend the speaker bemoaned the dis crepancy between the real needs of pupils and teachers and what many administrators want coun selors to do mr miller also told the counselors that we are getting an increasing number of 17 and 18 year olds in our high schools they're staying long er and we've got to see that we have suitable training for them he de clared it was reported
