dr robert j mccracken seniors give 93,000 in policies to lu insurance policies taken out by lehigh university's senior class which will have a total value of 93,000 in 20 years were turned over to elmer w glick treasurer of the university following commence ment exercises by philip f new man jr class president the contribution represents 300 twenty-year endowment insurance policies to be support ed by 310 members of the class graduated monday each sub scriber will carry a policy at a cost of 14 a year the class insurance program at lehigh was first adopted by the class of 1929 the next class to use this type of class memorial gift was that of 1938 following 1958 there will be an uninterrupted flow of class gifts as the result of annual class insur ance programs adopted since 1938 school supts to give course in pub admin three area superintendents of schools will teach a course in public administration during the summer term according to dr harold p thomas director of the summer ses sion and head of the department of education the three are dr john s cartwright allentown schools dr george a eichler north ampton schools and dr maurice stratton tredyffrin-easttown school district berwyn each will direct the course for a two-week period of the summer ses sion which begins today a former resident of bethlehem dr john s geissinger will be among the visiting staff for the regular session which will close july 30 dr geissinger a former supervis ing principal of springfield town ship will teach courses in supervi sion of instruction and elementary school curriculum he is now superintendent of schools in somerville n.j others of the staff will be miss ruth berg reading consultant for the allentown school district george h gilbert principal of the lower merion senior high school ardmore howard armstrong an derson high school anderson ind thomas w watkins supervising principal of coopersburg schools and dr joseph neidig superinten dent of schools in quakertown dean walker get valued awards dr wray h congdon dean of students and dr william c walker research assistant professor of chemistry were the recipients of the r r and e c hillman and robinson awards respectively at the annual faculty dinner june 1 the hillman award which totalled 1,500 was presented to dean congdon as a member of the faculty who is deemed to have done most toward advancing the interests of the university dr walker received the 1,000 robinson award given each year to a staff member not over 35 years and below the rank of associate professor who has been voted as giving outstanding performance in the service of the university dr james l graham associate professor of psychology who has taught here since 1930 and rafael a soto associate professor of romance lan guages who has taught at lehigh since 1925 both of whom will retire june 30 were presented with silver engraved trays twenty five year service awards went to dr elmer bratt professor of economics dr earl l crum professor of classical languages and dr andrew w litzenberger superintendent of buildings and grounds alumni and parents of lehigh university have met the 250,000 challenge of an anonymous donor by raising 252,909 for a new stu dent health center stewart j cort chairman of the alumni fund raising committee announced last week at the annual business meeting of the alumni association according to cort's announce ment 3,051 alumni donors and 248 parents subscribed that amount in the past nine months the fund will be used to con struct equip and endow the new health center on the upper cam pus in presenting his report cort pointed out that the total raised this year exceeds last year's final total by 26,768 he also reported that the number of donors has risen from last year's total of 2,595 to 3,051 alumni and faculty contributions to date total 229,436 another 23 473 has been contributed by parents of students last year our alumni fund was among the largest in the country said cort in praising the alumni for their success this year see challenge page 3 monroe j rathbone president of the standard oil company of new jersey stressed the great import ance of human relationships in the world today before lehigh's 86th graduating class monday he point ed out that real need for progress lies in learning how to live with people the 409 graduating seniors and some 2000 guests were cau tioned that although progress in science and technicological developments will unquestion ably go forward at an accelerat ed pace the area where progress is not assured is in human rela tionships throughout the world rathbone added we have not learned how to get along with each other how to respect each other's desires ambi tions and viewpoints how to recon cile conflicting views on a tolerant middle ground we have not achiev ed the knack of cooperation after discussing the need for good human relationships in the world of business rathbone extended his vista to the world situation today the world is made up of people — and learning how to live wth peo ple how to work with people how to understand other peoplels de sires reactions and motivations is just as important as learning the technical and scientific skills standard of new jersey's pres ident continued the world we live in today is full of uncer tainties and conflicts and many people view the future wth a pretty gloomy outlook i happen to belong to the other school rathbone said that advances in medicine agricultural methods soil conservation developments of new forms on energy and technology on the whole will move forward and will add to the world's wealth and mean better living for everyone if we can progress in our human relationships half as well as we will do in science and technology in the next 10 or 20 years your children the class of 54 was told will in deed be living in a wonderful world it is a job to which you and other trained men can contribute much if you recognize its that independence of ex pression and of judgment are in danger of becoming a lost art he addressed the graduating class their parents and friends in packer me morial church the rugged individualism which was the outstanding fea ture of american life in the 19th century said dr mccrack en is fast disappearing and standardization is taking its place he added uniformity extends not only to dress and manners but to speech and thought both nowadays are so conditioned as to be for mil lions practically automatic we have to reckon in america with the ex istence of a mass mind whose tastes standards and responses tend to be stereotyped the result is that people are afraid of anything that savors of ec centricity they want to be indis tinguishable from their neighbors group habits are an essential ele ment in all group life and many of them involve no moral issue but acquiescence we listen to what others have to say before we speak and when we speak it is to echo the sentiments we have just heard ex pressed we don't have convictions we have opinions impressions theo ries and even before we air them we are careful to find in which di rection the wind is blowing we don't put color into our environ ment we take our color from it dr mccracken said the prob lem is especially one that faces young people they should be on the way to mental and moral independence he continued they should be building their own world acquiring their own preferences and standards learning to carry themselves in the face of opposition yet all sorts of group pressures bear down on them they feel they have to satisfy the requirements of sociability it is the kind of situation that tests moral stamina to say no when everybody else is saying yes calls for a high and rare form of moral courage the person who says it has principles as well as prefer ences convictions as well as opinions cool breather forecast but don't count on it cool today but a warm weekend is expected according
