seventy students received 75 rotc awards yesterday as army and air force cadet corps honored undergraduate leaders for scholastic excellence and military prowess lt col ralph a newman head of the department of air science and tactics presented the president's award for scho lastic excellence and military achievement reflecting credit on lehigh and the air force rotc unit to the following men cadet lt col howard c judd jr cadet capt murray h miller cadet capt charles w rosner all seniors also cadet ist lt john s wilkinson cadet m/sgt charles m ash cadet m/sgt reynold a werkheiser cadet m/sgt richard w granville and cadet t/sgt richard w shaffer all 55 cadet col john c bailey jr 55 received the air force association award presented for scholastic ex cellence leadership ability and val ue to the air force in recognition of having been selected the student who has de monstrated the most outstand ing ability and achievement while enrolled in advanced air force rotc cadet lt col judd won the republic avia see bailey page 4 135 overlook gown deadline only 345 candidates for gradua tion june 21 out of approximately 480 in the class had signed up for their graduation gowns by the noon deadline saturday those who still haven't been measured for their gowns should report to the supply bureau as soon as possible to avoid paying an extra fee invitations if desired must be ordered immediately a supply of announcements will also be available at the bureau deadline for the purchase of sen ior class day tickets for the event to be held june 19 is the last day of exams the tickets costing 7 are for the banquet at the americus hotel in allentown the picnic and senior ball on the same day are free to those who have paid their senior class assessments big 4 to help police regain signs etcetera a joint cleanup campaign will be undertaken by arcadia ifc idc and town council in an attempt to collect the numerous street and highway signs that lehigh students have borrowed during the year in a meeting of the heads of the four organizations it was re vealed that the groups had been contacted by both the new jer sey state police and the bethle hem police concerning the signs the police want the signs back and will be forced to work through the administration with resulting prosecution for those involved un less the signs are returned volun tarily all signs may be left anonymously in front of the buildings and grounds garage behind price hall they will be removed from there by truck and will be returned to the proper authorities flagpole day ceremonies the only official assembly during the year for the entire student body will be held at 11:40 tomorrow morning in order to permit full at tendance classes have been re scheduled at least one award will be of 55 distribution of costliest epitome starts tomorrow dr robert j mccracken one of the nation's leading indus trialists and a world-famous clergy man will address members of the senior class parents alumni and friends during the commencement president martin d whitaker announced this morning that dr robert j mccracken pastor of the riverside church in new york city will deliver the baccalaureate sermon at 2:30 sunday afternoon june 20 in packer memorial church presentation of the commence ment address will be monday morn ing june 21 at 10:30 in grace hall by monroe j rathbone president of standard oil company of new jer sey born in motherwell scotland mccracken graduated from the uni versity of glasgow he received his m.a there in 1925 and his b.d in 1928 he has also attained eight hon orary degrees and is the author of questions people ask rathbone has devoted his long career in the petroleum industry to jersey standard and affiliates a chemical engineering gradu ate of lehigh he is now a trustee he became president of esso standard in 1944 and re mained in that position until 1949 when he was elected to the board of directors m j bathbone 70 receive awards at rotc day senior voting on the referendum which would amend the arcadia constitu tion to permit non-arcadians to serve as chairmen of arcadia's com mittees showed 827 in favor and 366 against or abstaining although the total vote this year was nearly 100 more than in 1953 the vote for the referendum was dis appointing said jack crandall chairman of the elections committee it is doubtful that a majority of the check with the registrar proves this eligible student body voted and if a to be correct it will not pass tomorrow at 1 p.m the most ex pensive yearbook in lehigh's his tory will be distributed to over year's issue cost 16,000 as compared to last year's cost of 13,000 the increase went mostly into more photography and engraving which has resulted in more and better pictures in the yearbook average cost of printing a copy of the 1954 epitome is 11 even though the selling price is only 5.25 per copy extensive advertising and sale of space to organizations has made up the difference in the price over 775 copies have been sold to non-seniors an increase of well over 300 copies from last year — an increase in sales due mainly to pur chases by the freshmen hedler tests rifle in sayre confiscation of the rifle he was using was the result of target prac tice in sayre park sunday by rob ert a hedler 57 according to cam pus policeman roy steyer hedler had been under surveillance by the forester since morning and had been observed pointing the reming ton 22 caliber-long rifle toward trees hedler claimed he was shooting at tin cans with the rifle which alleg edly was borrowed the
