to promote inter est and proficiency in the art of journalism besides providing social benefits for its members the membership of the fraternity is made up of those men who have served two years on one or more college papers andi whose work has been of the highest order major patch and captain bell of the military department have com pleted mapping out a very interest ing course in field engineering and fortifications to be given to the men taking first-year advanced work in that department this course is in structive in the defense systems de veloped during the recent world war and perfected sinice that time and should prove very interesting it deals with the various types of trench systems obstacles wire en tanglements revetment camouflage etc arid should prove beneficial both from the point of practical use and through knowledge of the various subjects as used in the lit erature dealing with the war • captain bell has completed the construction of a machine gun cart which will be used in the instruc tion of the unit in machine gun ' work this cart is much lighter than the regulation cart and is es pecially better adapted 1 to instruc tion purposes under conditions such as are to be met at lehigh the cart is so constructed that the gun tripod and ammunition boxes are easily reached and are arranged in such a position as to facilitate as sembling to-marrow night the lafayette gymnasium will be packed to ca pacity with hundreds of excited spectators who will have come from miles around to witness the second clash of the season between two of the keenest rivals in eastern college athletics much is expected of both teams and those who will witness the struggle will not be disappoint ed for never was a contest between these colleges what might be called am easy game regardless of pre vious games both teams enter the floor with a clean slate as it were however it so happens that lafay ette's slate has one blotch on it this season and it was lehigh that put that blemish there to the tune of a 20 to 17 score in a hotly con tested game in taylor gymnasium not so long ago and lafayette will be out in full furce to get sweet irevenge for this defeat there are some who are inclined to be somewhat pessimistic as to the outcome in view of the fact that the brown and white five has lost three out of the last five games played but it must be considered that most of the games which have been played recently have been by far the hardest games on the sched ule a look at lafayette's last few games shows that they have been also losing recently they went on a northern trip at which time they played amherst and williams be ing defeated by both of these teams the team which lehigh will prob ably put on the floor will no doubt be the same as in the last few games it is practically certain that hen schen will be unable to play as he is still suffering from a badly torn muscle in his side sntyder has re placed hess at the forward posi tion of late and it is not known which will start the game saturday lingle will of course hold down the other forward position with lees at center and weinstein and hartung guards as far as can be learned there will be little change in lafayette's line-up brennan has been practi cing regularly with the team of late and it is possible that he will get in the game in 1 which case he will replace repa should lehigh again defeat the maroons saturday's game will be the last of the season for the brown and white men but in the event that lafayette should win it is a greed that the deciding game of the series shall be played off on a neu tral floor the game is scheduled to begin at 8 p m in the lafayette gym nasium arrangements have been made for a lehigh cheering section and a large delegation of students the line-up : — lafayette lehigh longacre f lingle d crate f . hess or snyder duffy c lees kearney g weinstein repa or bremnan . g ... hartung col boy den of the portland ce ment association gave a very in teresting and instructive lecture to the senior civils wednesday morn ing march 7th 1923 in the phys ics lecture room the lecture was on concrete and the importance of its constituents after a short introduction on the importance that concrete plays in modern construction and the sav ing in both material and money that could be effected by the use of con crete in the proportions shown both by theory and extensive tests made at the lewis institute in chicago to be the most economical he gave an accurate outline of the function played by each of the four ingredi ents of concrete the data from which col boy den gives his lectures is obtained from the results of experiments performed by the association under prof abrams of the lewis insti tute the greatest waste of the strength of concrete is due to the use of an excessive amount of wa ter in order to make use of chutes j with insufficient drop per foot he also explained how the strength of concrete is only developed fifty per cent when the structure is allowed to dry before it has been allowed to iripen with moisture and showed figures explaining how twenty-one jday ripening doubles the strength the lecture was supplemented by the use of a number of slides the mew men elected were : e p lones g f koegler g l wilmot r o norton r w lee e m burke and c l sholes a meeting of the scimitar club was held on wednesday evening february 28th for the purpose of electing men to replace those mem bers who had for various reasons left college the organization is an honorary social club composed of sophomores the initiation will be held some time next month wednesday evening m taylor gymnasium saw the defeat of the franklin and marshall academy courtmen at the hands of the le high five after a fast and exciting game the final score being 39 to 26 the lancaster collegians displayed an extremely snappy brand of bas ketball and had the brown and white players not been on their toes the whole evening the result of the game might have been dif ferent only once during the game did the blue and white threaten around the middle of the first half when the franklin and marshall players brought the score up to 11 to 10 but lehigh speeded up and ran away from thie visitors closing the period on the long end of a 21 to 11 score during the second half the lancaster collegians were completely outclassed although they made desperate efforts to get on top franklin and marshall for the greater part of the game displayed wonderful ability in placing long and difficult shots in the basket captain king was by long odds the star player for the blue and white it was he who instilled the fighting spirit into his team and it was he who did the majority of the scor ing for his team finding the basket for six double-deckers payne was the visitors ibest bet on the defense at times showing real ability snatch ing the ball away from the brown and white five several times yohn was not so strong in the foul-shoot ing department putting through 3 single-pointers out of 6 on the lehigh side all five men played an unusual game perhaps weinstein showed up best his re coveries of the ball and his clever dashes up to the basket being very noteworthy hartung's play also was very consistent heretofore the local guard had never scored more than one field goal but wed nesday night he crashed through with four continued on page four lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa friday march 9 1923 y m c a plans for spring work mermen ready for intercollegiates
