32 battling for annual arcadia posts frosh must accept bids by 5 friday cedar crest entrance moved to lu for day just where am i that was the question campus travelers were asking themselves thursday as they viewed spring's first practical joke a four by five foot sign resting at the base of the university flagpole inscribed across its face was the highly legible but rather confus ing message cedar crest college — entrance the arrow on the sign pointed directly at the alumni memorial building the sign which appeared sometime wednesday night or early thurs day morning was returned to dr dale h moore president of cedar crest at 4 p.m thursday dr moore who said it was the second time the sign had been stolen from its route 22 standard estimated the damage done to the sign and the cost of remounting the sign would exceed 50 in an interview with the editorial board of the brown and white dr moore said the sign's disappearance was the first unpleasant incident be tween his college and the surrounding men's colleges since a highly trea sured memorial sun dial was swiped last spring the dial has never been returned campaigning for the 1954-55 arcadia began yesterday with only 32 men running out of the 50 who took out petitons elections will be on mar 5 from 9:30 to 4:30 mar 6 from 9:30 to 12:30 and mar 8 from 9:30 to 4:30 deadline for the petitions was extended from the 15th to the 18th and all the candidates were briefed by ralph meerwarth elliott bur nett and tom nitsche last thursday afternoon of the 32 men running for office there are 19 juniors seven sophomores and six freshmen the only man to have previously served on arcadia is ralph hamilton 55 following are the candidates ted baum 55 jack biester 55 william budurka 55 kenneth carlson 57 stanley corbett 55 john crandall 55 theodore duetz 55 charles eisenfelder 55 richard glassberg 55 bruce gordon 57 charles green 56 robert haltenhoff 57 ralph hamilton 55 kent hemp hill 56 john kirkpatick 55 eugene murphy 56 thursday when the period of silence begins at 8 p.m this period will end at 6 p.m friday bids may be picked up in drown hall between 1 p.m and 5 p.m upon presentation of id cards prospective pledges cannot leave drown hall with the bids while making their decisions and must sign and return unac cepted bids accepted bids must be returned to houses after the period of silence ends the in dividual houses hold pledge ban quets at 6 p.m red cross bloodmobiles will be on the lehigh campus to collect what is hoped will be a record amount of blood from the lehigh family on march 18 and 19 at present there are two classifications into which the blood donated might go — civil ian and defense lehigh has cho sen the defense classification which means that the blood will go to the stock-pile for the de partment of defense and to vet erans hospitals as well as for possible use in the gamma glo bulin to fight polio program in the event that we are engaged in a shooting war our blood will be used on the battle front the reason for choosing this classification is because we felt that this was where the real need was last year it was split between civil ian and military because of the ko rean war this decision was made by the blood drive committee head ed by richard glassberg 55 and dr charles a seidle blood drive pledges are going well and we've had response from every dorm section and every fra ternity we would like to break last year's total of 673 pints which was 57 pints over the quota according to publicity chairman elliot barnett 54 this year pledges will be due tomorrow however walk-ins see blood page 4 cites lehigh's religious clubs and discusses their purposes by fred warnecke close cooperation a sense of duty and a common understanding make the religious clubs and organizations an outstanding part of the lehigh campus although the eight religious clubs vary in size program and reli gious conviction all of them with the exception of the christian fellow ship are connected with the interfaith council duo-humorists acclaimed by small scl audience stars as well as coming into his own while playing prelude in g major opus 32 and span ish dance in his solo numbers sebastian opened the program with the lively bouree from second english suite by bach and the 200 year-old concerto in d major for flute opus 27 in three movements striving desperately to hold the see scl page 5 during musical comments on the se lections miss jarnac on the other hand although she relied on the audience's sight rather than their ears to put her act over constantly gave the impression of dynamic pep and friendliness the third member of the cast albert malver piano accompa nist blended well with both by bill haase the 1,300 persons who didn't show up friday evening to fill grace hall for the fifth program of the student concerts-lectures series missed a very unusual and entertaining per formance the 500 persons who did attend were enthusiastic in their ac claim for john sebastian harmonica virtuoso and dorothy jarnac dance humorist duo-stars of the night sebastian's faultless perform ance of classical semi-classical and modern selections normally written for symphonic instru ments removed any doubts that anyone might have had about the harmonica not being a musi cal instrument miss jarnac captivated her audi ence with her varied performance of serious modern impressionistic danc ing and zany hilarious dead-pan comedy numbers she is truly the feminine victor borge of the dance probably the most unusual parts of the show were the numbers in which miss jarnac and sebastian performed together miss jarnac danced the action as sebastian read short dialogues on the art of mod ern painting and on writing a speech for graduation it was amazing that two per sons with such completely dif ferent personalities could team to present a well-knit interest ing program sebastian maintained an air of ar tistic dignity throughout the pro gram only mellowing occasionally b&w band to present recital sun ranging from wagnerian opera to sousa marches a concert varied enough to suit any musical tastes will be presented by the brown and white band under the direction of prof william h schempf at 4 p.m sunday in broughal junor high school as part of the sunday recital series composed of richard hamlen 57 john aman 56 and lester moore 56 the band's trumpet trio will be featured in the agos tini-bainum composition the three trumpeteers gordon jacob's music for a festi val was commissoned by the arts council of great britain for the 1951 festival of britain arranged in suite form it alternates a brass group with the full band those in the brass group include hamlen aman moore john ott 57 trumpets thurman kremser 54 robert fauchaux 56 neal griffing 55 trombones john d kirpatrick 55 tuba ronald schumacher 57 tympani ralph vaughan williams toccata marziale is a high spirited work by the composer of folk-song suite perform ed at one of last year's band concerts another english com position by the eminent conduc tor sir thomas beecham is the march for band see concert page 5 composed of representatives from the hillel foundation the new man club and the christian council the interfaith council coordinates the activities of the major faiths and promotes har mony and understanding be tween them the annual conference on reli gion which this year will bring will herberg a prominent theologian to the campus for a two-week period beginning march 14 is the main act ivity of this group largest of the religious clubs with about 150 dues-paying members the hillel foundation meets every third wednesday of the month at the jew ish center the foundation run by a council varies its program schedule with speakers iilms and s-jcial eve nings second member group on the in terfaith council is the roman catho lic group the newman club which meets approximately once a month this group although it is not as see religion page 5 sheridan's condition reported fairly good billy sheridan assistant director of intercollegiate athletics and for mer wrestling coach at lehigh is re ported to be in fairly good condi tion at st luke's hospital where he was admitted jan 22 with what was described as a pain around his heart sheridan was honored recently when the bethlehem school board of which he was a long-time mem ber named an
