a minimum average of 1.50 for freshmen before they can pledge a fra ternity has been proposed to the fraternities in amendment form by the scholarship committee of the interfraternity council if adopted the terms of the amendment would not affect the present freshman class with the prospect of comparatively low house averages the executive committee of the council decided to look into the possibility of raising the fraternity averages after almost one hour of debate monday night the delegates were instructed to take the amendment back to their respective houses for discussion and the scholarship com mittee was instructed to review freshman averages for the past couple of years in order to deter mine approximately how many freshmen the houses could expect to have affected by such a rule several delegates and house presidents objected to the amendment on the ground that they needed a minimum num ber of pledges to keep their houses operating others expressed the opinion that the proposed amendment would not solve the problem of low fraternity scholarship since only a small per centage of freshman fall below the would-be required 1.50 the representatives in this cate gory thought another ruling would be more effective one person sug gested that a rule which would force a pledge to get better than a 1.80 by the end of two semesters of pledging in order to continue his association with the house alumni adviser george p robinson 111 told the gathering that there might be as many as 13 houses wth lower than a 2.00 average and that only six houses are in the 2.30 and above cate gory no official figures were available at the time of the meeting the annual greek weekend will take place march 19 and 20 mustard and cheese will present mister roberts both nights saturday after noon billy drechman's dixieland band will be featured at the maen nerchor the monte carlo dance will take place saturday night at grace hall with george sommers orches tra cost to idiots of snowballing to be paneful richards and dravo will share the cost of repairng the windows broken during the snowball fight between the two dormitories it was disclosed at the idc meeting tuesday although students are usually fined 3 for throwing snowballs in the dormitory area there were approximately 210 students involved in the battle and house officers claimed they were un able to get the names of all the offenders therefore the usual fine was not levied however idc officials reiterated that should any similar cases arise the fine will be strictly enforced at the same meeting the revised constitution was read by dick schectman 54 it will be formally presented for approval of the coun cil at the next meeting if approved the constitution would have to be ratified by 75 per cent of the dormi tory sections a motion by dan klein 54 that the idc business committee be in corporated into the new constitution as a standing committee was defeat ed unanimously the group felt that the new committee should remain an interim one until it develops de finite methods of operation earlier in the committee's re port klein reported progress in investigating various possible fields of operation for the com mittee as well as the election of permanent fficers approval by arcadia and the naming of mai gross 54 as arcadia observer on the committee don schindel 54 was appointed by president bob ameling 54 to in vestigate dormitory accommodations for graduates and their guests dur ing graduation weekend this june price hall was allocated money for a house banquet as a reward for be ing named the best dormitory sec tion in 1952-53 lanin to provide mil ball music cocktail-type dresses should be worn by women at the military ball which will be held sat feb 27 on the upper floor commendation ribbon with metal pendant at a brief ceremony in grace hall monday col albert c molter made the award maj patterson came to lehigh in 1953 and was assigned senior en gineer instructor of the engineer unit of the rotc program the award reads in part through intelligent planning aggressive lead ership and skillful management maj patterson made ingenious use of available means for the installation maintenance and operation of eight courses of instruction in engineer specialties critically needed by units in korea despite rapid changes in engineer equipment and techniques used by operating units in korea maj patterson maintained a flexible training program army commends patterson for korean course work a set of 10 goals for the lehigh man have been drawn up by the members of the senior honorary leadership fraternity omicron delta kappa the goals as denned by the student-faculty-administration soci ety were released this week in their final form after three years of pre paration the goals as finally approved by the society are intended to help correct the long-standing attitude among lehigh men and students of other colleges that they are in school to learn a trade and thereby earn a tidy fortune in the future in the statement accompanying the goals odk states it becomes obvious that few students have the remotest notion of what constitutes the ultimate goals of an education al policy here at lehigh apart from purely professional skills what are they lehigh students expected to have acquired from four years of intellectual labor and physical and social recreation . . . more thought ful students as well as the faculty and those officers responsible for a university's reputation and stan dards recognize that crass material ism has never been and can never be the sole or basic aim of a college education if this is the case then what type of man should lehigh as pire to produce the question is not an easy one to answer . . ." under these circumstances the members of odk concluded that le high needed a statement of its edu cational goals in the winter of 1950 a committee was appointed in odk see odk page 4 lehigh university bethlehem interfaith to be lead by herberg musical variety ranging from bach to a folk song will be included in the program to be given by john sebastian harmonica virtuoso and dorothy jarnac dance humorist at 8 tonight in grace hall under the sponsorship of the student concerts-lectures series undergraduates will be admitted free of charge with id cards the artists will be assisted by albert malver at the piano he will also present two solo numbers established as one of the premier harmonica virtuosos of our time se bastian who has appeared with such american symphony orchestras as the nbc philadelphia rochester cleveland and louisville as well a more than 300 solo recitals since the war will present the fifth program of the series the harmonica is beginning to take its place in the family of sym phonic instruments with such well known figures as aaron copland and harl mcdonald expressing their admiration of sebastian and with their interest in composing for his instrument the program will include bouree from second english suite by bach and concerto in d major for flute opus 27 in three movements see scl page 4 does the university committee on student club finance have the right to pass judgment and super vise organizations that don't have university appropriations this question was the hottest issue at ar cadia's meeting last monday night in drown hall the question arose in debate over the interpretation of uni versity regulations of 1937 which discuss the handling of student money the university committee on stu dent club finance feels that the rules mean all students and that the term student money was used col lectively however the university commit tee is not certain it was reported and has sent a memorandum to the educational policy committee if they do not receive any additional information from this group their opinion will stand this question does not include athletics the debate ran but deals only with a dozen organizations that do not receive appropriations di rectly from the university the university committee's inter pretation of its jurisdiction states it is the interpretation of the com mittee on student club finance that see arcadia page 5 a widely known theologian and philosopher-social scientist will herberg will lead the annual inter faith conference in march herberg who has led religious conferences on many other of the that 57.6 per cent of the freshmen obtained less than 2.0 av erages according to figures obtained wednesday largest group consisted of those freshmen getting between 1.0 and 1.5 that group consist ed of 134 or 19.253 per cent of the class by way of contrast only 19 freshmen or 2.729 per cent achieved better than 3.5 second largest group was the 112 freshmen obtaining averages be tween 1.51 and 1.8
