yolnme 65 — number 28 lehigh university brown and white arcadians extend petitions deadline tuesday february 16 1954 lehigh university bethlehem pa scl friday menu offers program of light comedy petitions of nomination to arcadia will be accepted until thursday at 4 p.m the original deadline of yesterday was extended by arcadia at its meeting last wednesday and election dates were changed to march 5 6 and 8 as of press time sunday 39 petitions had been given out to potential candidates ten completed petitions had been turned in to the arcadia office the deadline was extended in or der to encourage more students to run for the student council the ex tension was suggested by tom nit sche 54 chairman of the elections committee who stated that it would not affect the dates of the election at the meeting it was stated that the two posters circulated about campus in the past three weeks in an attempt to make more people run for arcadia were not put up by the elections committee the expense is being borne by an anonymous indi vidual not arcadia treasurer mai gross 54 disclosed that arcadia had incurred a deficit of 2,186.43 for the fall semester and that the deficit for the yet\r would be approximately 179 arcadia will request 179 from the student club finance roving fund to make up for the estimated deficit by james d picton john sebastian harmonica virtu oso and dorothy jarnac dance hu morist will present the fifth pro gram of the student concerts-lec tures series at 8 p.m friday in grace hall the light comedy pro gram will bring to the campus a new concert attraction which has been acclaimed by collegiate audiences on the west coast guest appearances with such principal american symphony orchestras as nbc philadel phia rochester cleveland and louisville as well as more than 300 solo recitals since the war have established sebastian as one of the premier harmonica virtuosos of our time his droll personality has made him a popular favorite in supper clubs between concert tours this winter he made appearances at the persian room in new york's hotel plaza the empire room in chicago's palmer house and ciro's in holly wood he has been a television star on ed sullivan's toast of the town the ken murray show cavalcade of stars the kate smith show andi many other major network presen tations his unique sound has made kis met's stranger in paradise popular throughout the nation the errant little godfrey archie bleyer sup plies the accompaniment for se bastian on that side as well as an other favorite autumn leaves dorothy jarnac became a dancing star vernight in the broadway hit bloomer girl and then was singled out for her comic dances in tickets please increasing recognition has been given the harmonica as a musical in strument worthy of taking its place in the family of symphonic instru ments in recent years the paradoxi cally pastoral and metropolitan qua lity of its sounds has prompted aaron copland harl mcdonald roy harris and other composers to ex press their admiration for sebastian and their interest in composing for his instrument here is a sound which will be in cluded in tomorrow's music per formed by an artist who has done a great deal toward bringing it from the lowly mouth organ to a treasur ed concert instrument john sebastian and dorothy jarnac story of sheridan's life to top 54 festival bill new s x house is sweetheart by george beezer sigma chi which moved last week from its old house at 103 e packei aye to its beautiful home in sayre park now boasts the newest fraternity house in the university with a living capacity of 34 the new house was designed to utilize all available space slid ing door closets eliminate the need for bureaus in its 16 study rooms all the rooms are decor ated in bright pastels three of the walls in each in one color with a contrasting color on the fourth costing approximately 140,000 the new house is of split-level de sign its exterior finished in red brick the house has almost all new furniture the 40 by 23 foot upstairs living room has new leather furni ture rugs and lamps as well as a fireplace see sigma chi page 4 station wlrn liquidater debt sets expansion by don allardyce in the six years since 1943 wlrn the radio voice of lehigh reduced itf 6,000 debt to 1,050 through the funds allocated them by student club finance each year's allocation from scf was used to reduce the debt rather than in any program of expansion the success in gene ral operations ami debt reduc tion was so great that the board of publications under which wlrn operates decided to li quidate the remaining 1,050 in debtedness to facilitate progress internally and externally now wlrn is planning to im prove and extend its services to the student body plans for the future include a system whereby all off campus fraternities will be provided with program material from wlrn at a nominal charge of 10 to cover the cost of installation of the requir ed equipment also planned is a new tape re corder as well as booste-rs oscilla tors amplifiers and a frequency standardizer all of these and other plans are being made in consultation with prof j b mcfadden the sta tion's adviser during the summer of 1953 several staff members made ex tensive repairs and additions to the station studios located in the basement of drown hall a com plete interior redecorating job a new newsroom and a new tile floor were a few of the improve ments with the opening of school new station officers consisting of paul sichert 54 station manager george see wlrn page 4 lanin orchestra mil ball choice a completely new stage construc tion of which is to begin soon will be built on the floor of grace hall to give an arena effect greater capacity and better vision from any part of grace hall are the objects of the new stage which still holds its place as the widest stage in the world with faculty advisers prof albert rights and prof schempf the all student staff is responsible for every phase of the festival 33 dropped 201 placed on scholastic pro thirty-threa students have been dropped from the university for fail ing to meet academic standards for the second straight semester dean wray h congdon has announced the committee on the standing of students also placed 201 students on scholastic probation for the spring semester dean congdon stated that the 201 arnold air society a grand march will be part of the evening's events and pershing rifles and arnold air society will perform drill exer cises students are requested to wear uniforms and girls should be formal chaperones for the event will be col molter and lt col barberis of the mil department tickets are 1.95 guns flags and banners will be displayed in military fashion and pershing rifle members will be dec orated the billy sheridan story an outstanding piano soloist music by the glee club and band and dances by a student cast will comprise the three-part seventh annual spring music festival april 26 and 24 in grace hall the program was announced last wednesday night to the 150 students who attended the music festival smoker at that time ap plications for the postions on the festival staff were taken those who missed the smoker but wish to work on the festival should contact george cron at richards 2a un 6-9285 depicting the life of sheridan who retired as wrestling coach last year after 40 years at the helm the sheridan story employs original music by prof william schempf head of the music department it takes the man who put lehigh's name on the map as a wrestling power from the early days of his life in scotland to his emigration to this country his start as lehigh coach and the fruitful years that followed william fairlamb noted pia nist from lebanon valey coliege will hold the spotlight during the second part of the program fairlamb is well known in this area he has been featured several times in the sunday recital series and has played with the allentown symphony orchestra and the lehigh valley symphony orchestra he has appeared at the academy of musical arts in philadelphia the first part is comprised of a wide variety of music presented by the band glee club brass choir and dancers
