by charles j moravec university news editor as the 18th anniversary of the concert-lectures series is observed next month when john sebastianj harmonica virtuoso and dorothy jarnac dance humorist appear in a comedy program friday evening february 19 lehigh university will be the scene of a new type of enter tainment already heralded on the west coast today lehigh university is known to concert managers throughout the world who look to the south mountain campus for a guidepost of collegiate iikes and dislikes in the enter tainment field they have come to regard grace hali as a testing ground for new traveling troupes as well as first american perfomances of foreign artists why perhaps a short review of the ser ies history would not be out of place in this faculty issue of the brown and white it began with £ suggestion almost two decades ago that lehigh's lecture program was slightly one-sided it wasn't difficult for the edi tors of the lehigh review cam pus magazine of the day to de duce that leciures were poorly attended because they offered little relief from classroom work that what students want ed was a glimpse of other fields the answer was simple why not spring tuition by dean b c hayes i am running on only one platform — the betterment of lamberton hall i cannot promise anything but i will do my best judge me only on the basis of what i have done and not on what i say i will do on this platform and with the combination of an unauthorized scblh cold eggs and soggy toast timed perfectly mal gross cornered overwhelming grass-roots support and was precipitated onto arcadia in february 1952 although the scblh faded away quickly not so mr gross short ly he was invited to join the student-faculty lamberton hall committee became embroiled in the freshman vehicle controversy was appointed to the committee on student club finances and discipline and worked vigorously for what he believed the advancement and betterment of ar cadia and the student body as a result of his efforts his platform for re-election in 1953 was simply stated last year i asked you to elect me to arcadia not on the basis of what i promised i would do but on the basis of what i had done again 1 ask judge me not on what i say i will do but what i have done in the last year gross was elected on the first ballot with the current arcadia grossism ascended to new heights gross participation at arcadia meeting's and in arcadia affairs appears to be as certain as the great beyond and the more controversial the issue the more prominent his part when issues have gone unnoticed he notices them he is always the champion of student freedom and responsibility he exercises his fury against anything which appears not in the student interest and welfare but an inherent part of grossism has been an emphasis upon rigorous financial responsibility and accountability and a compelling emphasis upon he impartial treatment of certain issues involving vested interests this has brought him in conflict idealogically with his colleagues fellow students and university officials but has created a respect for student gov ernment which will do much to perpetuate the lehigh variety of student government and responsibility wheels were set in motion at the well-attended january meeting of the interdormitory council on tuesday evening to weave the fabric of a busi ness committee as a working organization under idc this committee as the name implies will have complete general supervision and juris diction over all business enter prises concessions vending and service machines etc operated in the dormitory system it be came an actuality on a motion by richard schechtman dravo d-11 passed by only a few dis senting votes the end result of this apparently significant innovation is envisioned as a far wider participation of dor mitory residents in affairs of para mount interest to themselves estab lishing a more cohesive and coop erative relationship within this group of students providing a means of financing recreational and other facilities for the common wel fare of dormitory men and finally to improve on the allocation of in come producing ventures within the dormitory system the original business committee as set up through schechtman's mo tion consists of the following repre sentatives of the several dormitories appointed by robert ameling idc president daniel klein price hall chair man thomas pentland william hillegas and eric schade all of dravo david sidikman and george cron richards warren brewer and william lindemann drinker beryl gardner and da vid laßocque taylor and john heuchert tempo this committee has already laid the ground work for this new sys tem as embodied in reports on sa lient features by pentland klein cron and schade describing the or ganization chart modus operandi see n)c page 4 congdon by john w maxwell bursar pre-payment of tuition by close tc one thousand students has been re ceived by the bursar's office as ofi this date the larger number of these payments have been mailed in although an appreciable number have been made in person by the men themselves this is in response to letters mailed to the homes of practical ly the entire undergraduate body the last week in december recepits for payments made by mail are being sent to the respective addresses from which they were received even though jan 20 was specified as the date by which these pay ments were requested the bursar's office is gratified by the early re sponse and feels that the student will be rewarded by greatly facili tating registration which has been reduced to two days in this connection informa tion has been obtained from the registrar to the effect that regis tration for all sophomores and upper classmen is scheduled for monday feb 8 freshmen re turning students and transfers will register on feb 9 alpha betical groups by hours will be announced soon students are reminded that a bursar's receipt or authorization in lieu thereof will be necessary to pick up the registration ticket in packard lab at the appointed time by chaplain raymond e fuessle fuessle posts chapel roster see chapel page 4 students took time terwilliger will be the guest speaker at the 11 a.m chapel service in packer me morial church sunday this will be dr terwilliger's second visit to lehigh this term on dec 10 he spoke to a group of students and conducted an in formal discussion under the aus pices of the christian council and was very well received on that occasion dr terwilliger is at present rec tor of christ church poughkeepsie n.y and chaplain to episcopal fa culty and students at vassar college he received his theological training at the episcopal theological school at cambridge mass in 1948 yale university
