dunn said and started to count off with brown it was during the counting that the shooting occurred fines dropped against 4 frosh appeal of the case of four lehigh freshmen who received two disci plinary demerits each after their arrest by easton police on a motor vehicle violation charge resulted in the removal of the university disci plinary measures arcadian mai gross reporting the action to the body wednes day night revealed that the uni versity removed its fine after charges were dropped against the students by the easton po lice the four william leclere john moyer austin short and william see appeal page 5 this is the fourth in a series of articles on arcadians their platforms and efforts to carry them out the article on mai gross orginally scheduled for publica tion today will be published later this semester elliot barnett did not make any specific promises when running for arcadia last february instead he promised to work for a strong arcadia which would form the nucleus of an almost for gotten man lehigh spirit it will be my goal barnett wrote in know your candi dates to get arcadia behind lehigh rather than where it has been at present way behind lehigh he also came out in favor of the referendum granting membership in arcadia to the idc ifc and town council presidents that referendum did not get sufficient votes to pass barnett's chief contribution as an arcadian is the controversial political activities act which sets up campus election regula tions and methods of enforcing them athough the act was the work of the elections commit tee it is generally agreed that barnett was the driving force behind it controversay arose over the act because of the clause that those committing flagrant violations of the act or refusing to pay assessed fines should be declared ineligible to hold office in any activity receiving funds from arcadia although it was passed by the group over the objections of mai gross and corky flynn its final dis position is still undetermined those opposed to it are now in the process of fighting it on the basis of its doubtful legality barnett also serves as chair man of the publicity committee the committee has begun a di rectory listing all arcadians the officers and their functions the committees their members and their functions the committee has arranged for interviews and other programs on wlrn personal contacts with dormitory sections were instituted arcadians have been given specific assign ments to speak to certain sections the success of the program is doubt ful at this time the committee was allocated money to publish a newsletter con taining news of arcadia none have see barnett page 5 death ended an afternoon drink ing spree for a lamberton hall dish washer when he was shot by a friend on dec 23 philip dunn about 40 who had worked at lamberton since october was killed by evan brown when he intervened in brown's attempt to shoot his brown's wife mary dunn died in st luke's hospital at 7:07 p.m an hour after the shoot ing occurred in the brown home critically hurt by the same shot was brown's 14-year-old daughter shir ley according to police the bullet passed through dunn's chest hit miss brown's left arm and lodged in her chest doctors at the hospital considered it amazing that she lived brown is being held in north ampton county prison an a first degree murder charge the shooting occurred shortly af ter mr and mrs brown returned home accompanied by dunn at 5:30 the two men had started drinking at about noon and mrs brown had joined them later in the afternoon mrs brown had begun to make dinner when brown grabbed a craig-springfield model 1898 army rifle which was always kept loaded in the kitchen and announced that he was going to count to 10 and shoot his wife the phantom packard is shown after it came to a halt below the alumni building parking lot the packard belonging to university technician alexander f bodner rolled from its parking spot in the lot across the street over the sidewalk and into the fence bodner had left his care parked with the hand brake released and was walking oward the alumni building he saw the car as it ended its mysterious trip calvin marsh for the first time in the history of the university the endowment has topped the 10,000,000 mark ac cording to elmer glick treasurer of the university receipt of 8,201 from the es tate of asa packer has brought the total endowment to 10 002,047 this latest income from the founder's estate has increas ed the total of the asa packer fund already the largest of all endowment funds at the univer sity to 2,411,163 packer's first donation consisted of 500,000 and 57 acres of land which made lehigh a wealthy insti tution in the day of post civil war reconstruction in 1878 packer donated funds to erect the university library as a me morial to his daughter mrs lucy packer linderman and in addition he left 233,866 as an endowment for the library lu endowment hitss 10,000,000 for first time a pianist two soloists and a 40-piece concert orchestra will take part in the gershwin festival in grace hall at 8 tonight in the fourth student concerts-lectures program of the current year students will be admitted free upon presentation of their id cards guest tickets will be on sale at 7 p.m at 1.50 each all the fascinating rhythms the sadness and the gaiety and the eternal youth that was george gershwin become reality again on the program of the gershwin concert orchestra under the baton of robert zeller mario barggiott who was gershwin's friend and protege will be the piano soloist carolyn long glamorous lyric soprano will share the vocals with baritone calvin marsh the program for the concert has been chosen by the produ cer howard lann in consulta tion with ira gershwin lyricist to his brother's songs and by robert russell bennett who or chestrated much of gershwin's music the result — the high points of gershwin's song output and three of the finest orchestral works — makes a gala gershwin festival such as only a few large cities have hereto fore enjoyed the program opens with the overture made up of themes from of thee i sing played by the or nesday night by president ralph meerwarth petitions are due feb 15 they will be available monday martin kovach pianist violinist this sunday at 4 as part of a series of sunday con certs sponsored by the lehigh de partment of music eva kovach vio inist and mimi martin pianist will be featured in a recital to be held this sunday at 4 p.m in the lehigh library the concert will include fau re's sonata in a major this is believed to be the first perform ance of that work in bethlehem also included will be vivaldi's sonata in d major and beetho ven's sonata in f major eva kovach is a native of hun gary and lives in brooklyn where she is professor of violin at brook lyn academy she studied with the celebrated professor hubay at the royal academy in budapest and has given solo recitals in hungary switzerland austria italy and south america in 1941 she did a series of programs for the national radio station in rio de janeiro and has given recitals in the principal cities of brazil mimi martin is also a native of hungary and now makes her home in bethlehem accompanist soloist and teacher mrs martin has ap peared with the lehigh orchestra in 1950 arcadia elections to be held mar 8 9 in the arcadia office in further remarks to the body meerwarth urged the ar cadians to encourage mature men of high calibre to run for positions in the student govern ment candidates will be allowed to be gin their campaigning feb 22 following the president's re marks arcadian don luce issued a reminder to all those with the in tent of applying for a concession permit for the spring semester to do so by 11 a.m tomorrow luce stated that all applications should be turned into the arcadia office by the prescribed deadline and any received later than satur day would not be considered until the first of february at the conces sions committee's monthly meeting the names of those receiving concessions permits for sale of articles on campus for next se mester will be announced next week luce said arcadian tom nitsche announced the construction of three portable bulletin boards to be erected at three strategic points on the cam pus for the purpose of displaying arcadia election posters the ma terials for the boards is being sup plied by the department of build ings and grounds charles eisenfelter reported that the 16-man committee of which he is a member is planning the publi cation of
