bach the plucky 1 15 lb lad astonishes crowd with fall the regular monthly meeting of the chemical society was held last friday evening in the chemistry lecture room there was a good ly turnout of students most of whom were the chemical engineers but a great many men of outside courses attended as is the custom of the society refreshments and smokes were served after the speeches were over the speaker of the evening was assistant professor l h opdycke ph d his subject was the war explosives program of our gov ernment during the war dr op dycke accumulated most of his ma terial for that subject by means of his position which was that of ar my inspector of ordnance he had a very responsible position and fill ed it very capably he had to do with the inspection manufacture and transportation of explosives for the pacific coast section and his talk was built entirely around those experiences which were exceedingly valried to say the least the talk was very instructive and iruerestiiiig and was one of the fac tors which made the meeting the success that it was . on thursday morning at 11 o clock in the university chapel four members of the junior class clashed in a battle of words at the annual junior oratorical contest held each year on the 22nd of february the contest was very keen this year each of the four contestants covering themselves with gloiry and the spec ulation as to the various winners was wide and varied but of course the decision of the judges was the thing that counted to r a heckert goes the high est honor and he certainly handled the situation relations etc be tween america andi europe in the masterful style of an embryo de mosthenes j s grim jr to whom was accorded second honors discussed very capably the great problem do we need invisible control m e bi stoop winner of the third prize gave a very in teresting account of the situation in germany and particularly the latest developments continued on page four r e troutman the fourth con testant while the judges decreed that his oration was not as well pre good talk given by college head the life history of asa packer is outlined by dr richards in addressing freshman class albright faces lehigh courtmen a regular monthly meeting of the arcadia was held in drown hall last thursday night and several matters of importance pertaining to activities of the spring term were discussed it was suggested that some saturday during the second term when there would be one or more athletic events scheduled for taylor field be set aside as a dad's day a day when each stu dent would endeavor to have his fa ther or guardian visit lehigh so that they might become better acquaint ed with the place about which they have probably hea^rd so much the possibility of holding a typical foot ball smoker in taylor gymnasium on the preceding friday night and an entertainment by the musical clubs on saturday night were set forth and it is 1 believed that an at tractive program could be arranged for the entire week-end the rep resentatives were asked to learn the sentiment of their groups in regard d establishing dads day and to report at thie next meeting of the arcadia continued on page four the steering committee of the alumni association asked the ar cadia to foster the sub-freshman day as was done last year when likely athletic material was invited visiting five conies to bethlehem with record of eight con secutive wins freshmen lose to easton y m c a education is discussed lehigh lineup intact the brown and white basket ball squad was completely taken in to camp by thie strong n y u team last saturday night on the lat ter's home floor the final score was 37 to 20 neither of the fresbmen who have heretofore played stellar roles were able to come up to their usual form and of the older men lingle alone scored from the field for a total of six points hess by hook and crook managed to drop two goals in from the field and right then and there the lehigh scoring from the floor stopped and it re mained for lingle and weinstein to make an additional ten out of a pos sible sixteen points from the 15 foot mark only twice during the whole game did the score stand even and then for but a short time early in the first half the score was tied at 7 to 7 and at 9 to 9 for a very few minutes n y u then took the lead and maintained it through out although at the end of the first half their margin was but 3 points with the score reading 15 to 12 there were three substitutions made by each team the fouling was not done wisely but too well by both sides lehigh fans will note the re-ap pearance of gallagher in the line up who is back withl the squad af ter a year's absence he replaced titus early in the game at center but neither of these men could fill the breach left by the absence of johnny lees veteran at the center position toorock of n y u was easily the star of thie game playing the guard position excellently and slip ping in four goals from the field his team-mate taw ran a close second by scoring three baskets but his guarding was not met with ap proval on the part of the referee and he retired on personal fouls the every bout but the heavyweight was captured by lehigh with a fall though two of the bouts ran into extra periods the meet was run according to the old rules calling for nine-minute bouts and two extra three-minute periods in case of no decision in or der to accommodate dartmouth reynolds proved an able substi tute for capt schiwarzbach against brown of dartmouth although brown seemed stronger than rey nolds the lehigh man had the ad vantage in agility and was able to squirm out of his adversary's holds after quite a struggle reynolds threw his opponent in 7 minutes 33 second's warriner came through in fine shiape in thie second bout weldron ran into wafriner's arms giving thte lebigb man a hold which re sulted in a fall in 6 minutes and 24 seconds the 135-pound bout was one of the fastest of the evening gihon caught henretta's leg and pulled him down 1 to the mat keeping him there until he became exhausted the lehigh matman then was able to turn henretta over easily for a fall in 6 minutes 39 seconds another fast bout was the 145 pound bout between rogers and borglum the dartmouth wrest ler obtained a hold on rogers sev eral times but the drown and white man always was able to get to his feet and break away the bout re sulted in a draw and the decision was not reached until the second extra period in the first period rogers fought loose from borglum's hold after being on his feet four times in the second period ro gers obtained a fall in 1 minute and 40 seconds coxe and bauman staged perhaps the best exhibition of wrestling of the evening it was nip and tuck throughout the match until coxe just got a hold on the new eng lander as the bell rang in the ex tra period coxe broke away from his opponent and succeeded in throwing him for a fall in 1 minute and 56 seconds in the second ex tra period coxe was all ready to throw baumait again as his time was up burke put up a wonderful exhi bition against winchester in the 175-pound bout after two unsuc cessful tries hie finally got a fall in 5 minutes and 33 seconds levitz bad oberlander worried but was unable to bring him to the mat the referee awarded him the bout for aggressiveness the summary : in the taylor pool last saturday af ternoon by the score of 42 to 26 the lehigh natators were not as much outclassed as the score might indicate but were unable to produce the final punch at critical moments the embryo doctors got away to a flying start when they annexed the relay the first event of the after . noon the event was close at all times but the distance lost by le high's first three swimmers was too great for harmon the brown and white ace to make up in the 50 yard dash welsh of the visiting team again nosed out harmon for first honors in the fast time of twenty-six secondls flat shaeffer of lehigh came in a close third in the 220-yard event harmon proved far too speedy for coady of hop kins and he crossed the finish line a good 10 yards to the good par sons followed the lone baltimore eni trant by about 10 yards for third place the plunge proved by far to be the classiest event of the entire meet captain underwood was unable to compete in his favorite event but his place was ably taken care of by regad and knipe both men of un usual calibre however the dope was completely shattered when howardi of hopkins plunged 69 feet 6 inches in his first attempt and in doing so shattered the pool record held by captain underwood by a scant 6 inches howard 1 seem ed satisfied with his performance when he passed the 69-foot marker and came up voluntarily before the 1 minute time limit was reached this was a most unfortunate occur rence as it appeared to most of the spectators that his efforts would have taken him the entire length of the pool had he remained m the water the maximum time hamil ton of hopkins proved nearly as clever with a mark of 68 feet in his second trial just nosing out regad for second place who had a mark of 67 feet to his credit the dive proved to be an interesting event which child's the local ace won handily from coady of the balti imore team the breast-stroke was won han dily by dunning of the visitors with freeman of lehigh coming in second welsly also easily won the 100-yard swim for the visitors from sbaeffer in good time lord of hopkins was third harmon and chiles starred far the brown and white taking first place in the evening promises to be one of the best of the season the lehigh team has been developing right along with the exception of a short slump after their glorious victory over lafayette and the men are nearly a dead shot when albright comes here with a very | impressive record having won eight straight games state college of forestry moravian and 1 muhlen berg are among the teams which have felt the sting of defeat at her hands the game with muhlenberg at allentown was a walk-away for albright the final score being 29 to 17 albright was ahead the en tire game and in no danger of be ing headed by muhlenberg last week the brown and white team lost to muhlenberg at muhlenberg but this game does not offer a fit basis of comparison for the two teams as it must be remembered that the lehigh five had just de feated their strong maroon rivals the saturday before and conse quently the team suffered a general temporary letdown both lehigh and albright defeated moravian college by lop-sided scores so that these games don't offer much in the comparison of the two teams there will be a regular meeting of the pre-medical society in drown hall on friday march 2nd ait 8:00 p m the speaker for the evening is dr s e rauch city physician dr rauch is a graduate of meddco-chi college philadel phia class of 1916 on friday night the freshman basketball team lost a hard fought game to the easton y m c a in the latter s gymnasium by the score of 39 to 20 the score was very close up until the last few minutes of play neither team leading by more than two or three points the half-time scolre was 12 to 10 in fa vor of the eastonians both teams then gradually increased their scores until there was about seven minutes left to play when the lehigh frosh went to pieces and their opponents scored almost at will before the final whistle blew the easton play ers had increased their lead to nine teen points the home team show ed remarkable team-work and play ed a wonderful passing game but the frosh were their equal for the greater part of the game good the flashy forward starred for the eas ton team scoring five field goals while bond the tall center of the yearlings played the best game for the time of halves — 20 minutes doctor charles richards presi dent of the university gave a very interesting lecture to the freshmen in the chapel last friday morning at 11 o'clock dr richards's topic was the history of lehigh uni versity continued on page four lebigb was founded for techni cal instruction something very rad dr richards spoke of the life of asa packer of the founding of the university and of its history up to the present time asa packer learm ed the trade of canal-boat builder as a young man and 1 went to mauch chunk to work brought up a stern presbyterian he was greatly grieved by the lack of cordiality which members of his sect greeted his arrival and joined the episco palian church in later years wish ing to devote some of his money to the education of the youth of the lehigh valley his attention was called to lafayette college then al ready an institution with a history and traditions however he learn ed that it was a presbyterian col lege and founded lehigh as an episcopalian 1 university in 1865 be ing one of the builders and for a long time president of the lehigh valley railroad a large part of his bequest was in the form of stocks of this company from 1871 to 1895 no tuition fee was charged but due to the failure of the railroad and decrease in value of the college holdings a tuition fee again became necessary the finances of the uni versity became so time of halves — 20 minutes doctor charles richards presi dent of the university gave a very interesting lecture to the freshmen in the chapel last friday morning at 11 o'clock dr richards's topic was the history of lehigh uni versity continued on page four lebigb was founded for techni cal instruction something very rad dr richards spoke of the life of asa packer of the founding of the university and of its history up to the present time asa packer learm ed the trade of canal-boat builder as a young man and 1 went to mauch chunk to work brought up a stern presbyterian he was greatly grieved by the lack of cordiality which members of his sect greeted his arrival and joined the episco palian church in later years wish ing to devote some of his money to the education of the youth of the lehigh valley his attention was called to lafayette college then al ready an institution with a history and traditions however he learn ed that it was a presbyterian col lege and founded lehigh as an episcopalian 1 university in 1865 be ing one of the builders and for a long time president of the lehigh valley railroad a large part of his bequest was in the form of stocks of this company from 1871 to 1895 no tuition fee was charged but due to the failure of the railroad and decrease in value of the college holdings a tuition fee again became necessary the finances of the uni versity became so
