scintillating play by coach baldwin's quintet wins first lafayette court tilt in four years before monster crowd harmon and childs win warriner scores fall the relay team wins first race of season in fast time hopkins meet next coxe is fully extended in earn ing decision over new eng land champion lafayette fouls prove fatal captain lingle's keen eye from the fifteen foot mark proves to be the deciding factor when longacre falters in final half the combined musical clubs held their second appearance in bethle hem last night at the grand theatre when they appeared at both shows this three-day engagement is a preparatory one to several other en gagements planned by manager h t litke 24 including a trip to baltimore already approved by the faculty the glee club rendered several selections among these being com rades in arms with several other song hits f b dorton 25 ac companied by the clubs sang the fa mous solomon levi the quar tette composed of f w lewis 23 f b dortow 25 j h thomas 25 and e c mccance 26 rendered the popular pieces sorter miss you and may i the mandolin club received much applause when they played the well known martin march and the popular selection carolina in the morning j h opdyke 23 made the big gest hit of the performance when he sang way down yonder in new odeams and lovin sam in his impersonations of the famous comedian al jolson the grand finale was taken by the combined clubs in the song hit farewell to thee the large number of students present clearly indicates the inter est manifested in the musical clubs the annual junior oratorical contest will be held in the univer sity qsapel on thursday morning february 22nd at 11 o'clock the contest is only open to members of the junior class and a further requisite requires that contestants sham prepare their own oration the alumni association sponsors the annual contest in that it offers three cash prizes of 25.00 15.00 and 10.00 the judges of the con test are also chosen from the alum ni body the contest this year bids fair to live up to the standard established by former contests and to be keen ly contested four members of the junior class will test each other's steel on thursday morning 1 , and if titles are any criterion of the sub ject matter and interest of an ora tion thursday's program should be of the best the orations this year as in for mer yeans has tunned at last for lafayette has finally met with de feat at the hands of a brown and white team on lehigh territory true the soccer team defeated them earlier in the year but the event did not call out as many witnesses as the recent activity in taylor gym nasium and even though the soccer tilt was a championship affair it is doubtful if the satisfaction ran any higher than it did over the results of the game on saturday evening to say that captain linigle and has huskies defeated lafayette would be enough to bring a feeling of re newed vigor and pep and enthusi asm to every lehigh man the game was called at 8 o'clock saturday evening before a crowd which exceeded any which has filled taylor gymnasium for some years lafayette was the first team to take the floor and when their white jer seys appeared they were greeted by a burst of cheering which made the beams of the gymnasium ring shortly after capt limgle led his crew on the floor and received even greater welcome than his opponents while the two teams were warm ing up the two student bodies held an enthusiastic cheering contest the band running true to form fur nished music fitting the occasion lehigh started the scoring when lingle dropped in five consecutive fouls the fun then started 1 . throughout the game an exhibi tion of close guarding was put on which has seldom been equalled both teams played carefully and even slowly in their effort to pre vent scoring lafayette's first tally came when crate made a beautiful shot from the corner of the floor this was followed by three fouls thrown by longacre then follow ed a period of passing and exchange of the ball until lingle carried the ball through the lafayette defense and made a one-handed shot from directly in front of the basket the game then tightened up and the half ended with the score of 9 to 7 with lehigh in the lead the scoring in the second half was agaim started by lehigh when hess capitalized on a follow-up of one of lees's attempts at a basket this was immediately followed by a double decker by crate the scoring see-sawed back and forth with many futile dashes for the ! basket doug crate was easily the honor man for the visitors and succeeded in caging five shots the only double-deckers garnered by lafayette there was no outstandi ng man on the lehigh five every man on the floor played his best and gave everything he had in an effort to break the jinix which has been following the brown and white teams for the past several years the game ended with the score standing at 20 to 17 lehigh lafayette i and hotly contested ; the best exhibition being that staged by the 158-pound trs from which coxe of lehigh emerged with a referee's decision over hareford of m i t after tern minutes of gruelling work af terward hareford returned to the mat in the heavyweight bout and defeated carlisle of lehigh by a referee's decision in the first bout capt schwarz bach of lehdgh sufferedi an acci dent and was carried from the mat later he returned 1 and lost to bru ner of m i t by a fall ; time 6:02 this was one of the two falls of the meet the other being scored by warriner of lehigh against norwood of m i t in the 125 pound class time 5:48 a final count shows that lehigh scored one fall and four decisions for a total of 17 points while m i k t scored one fall and one decision for a total of 8 points pittsburgh mermen by the score of 41 to 30 the meet was full of thrills and surprises and was anybody's meet until the last event was completed the brown and white men put up a val iant struggle and in many respects showed the best form of the year the relay team came through with a win for the first time of the year the pitt team emerged victors in five of the eight events but this re sult does not show the real strength of the lehigh team as a better turn or a better take-off in several events would have just reversed this score kistler of pittsburgh was the high scorer of the meet by virtue of hie capturing g fe?s a second and a third place he won the 50-yard back-stroke took a second place in the fancy dive and finished third in the 100-yard breast-stroke for second honors steele and carr of pitt were tied each with a first and a second place to his record steele won the 50-yard dash and finished second in the 50-yard back stroke while carr finished first in the 100-yard swim and captured second honors in the 50-yard dash harmon of lehigh besides swim ming anchor man on the winruing relay team handily won the 220 yard swim against butts and bright of pittsburgh he also finished third in the 50-yard dash but he was disqualified for running into a pittsburgh swimmer childs won first place in the fancy dive event which was the only other first place captured by lehigh in the meet the first event of the meet was the 200-yard relay which was won by lehigh shaeffer lehigh's lead off man secured a 2-foot lead over carr of pitt shields managed to just about maintain this lead against kistlen the pitt speed king then atwood although starting with a very poor dive clinched the race by adding several more feet to le high's lead harmon the lehigh anchor man was able to just keep ahead of steele of pittsburgh and thus win lehigh's first relay of the year childs lebigh's only entrant in the fancy dive event came through with a win by defeating kistler and lacey of pitt childs's dives were all nearly perfect with the exception of the first voluntary dive a run ning one-half gainor in which he fell down due to a poor spring from the board neither kistler nor la cey showed the excellent form of childs but both gave a very credi table exhibition the judge of this event was mr r s taylor and he awarded first place to childs second place to kistler and third place to lacey continued on page four captain underwood of lehigh had an off day in the plunge the best he could do being 56 feet thus the cornell yeanling matnien met the brown and white freshmen on saturday afttrmxm although the cornell wrestlers fought hard to take a victory back to ithaca at the end of the meet to their chagrin were on the short end of a 16 to 15 score a hard close-fought battle and 1 very exciting to say the least lehigh's victory was brought about by falls from poliska and ander son the rest of the men put up a hard fight but were against oppo nents who were their betters coach sheridan was greatly disappointed at the lack of interest the freshmen showed in giving no opposition for the 115-pound class and also the unlimited class no one came out for the unlimited class till thurs day afternoon and the man who came then had to wrestle with no coaching or experience whatsoever this is somewhat discouraging to the team when the material is around but has no interest in the work thie next meet will be with the allewtown y m c a the date is uncertain yet but it will probably be some time in the near future in order that this meet be a greater victory than before coach sheri dan urges all men to come out and help the team along with a little continued on page four there will be a regular meeting of the varsity club on thursday evening february 22nd this meeting will be in the form of a dinner held at the hotel wyan dotte at 6 30 o'clock good speak ers have been procured and quite a lot of important business will be transacted so every varsity club member is urged to turn out and insure successful meetings in the future by making this one a rous ing success a very interesting and instructive discussion on strain and fracture of metals was given by doctor walter rosenhain a noted english metallurgist and scientist before the metallurgical society in the lec ture room im the physics building on friday evening dr rosenhain is superintendent of the metallurgy department of the british national physical laboratory the meeting closed by a general discussion 1 and an opportunity for students and others present to ask questions which was liberally ex ercised dr rosenhain opened his talk by speaking of the effect of heating and quenching of metals and 1 alloys upon the structure of the metal and of the deplorable lack of method used mi both this and 1 foreign coun tries by industrial experimenters he stated that as yet nothing better than guess-work methods had been developed and showed the pressing need 1 of systematized experimenta tion by industrial concerns he also spoke of the same condition as re gards alloys many of which could be improved by study of the laws which govern alloying a field which has scarcely been touched alloys of steel sometimes harden by being allowed to stand several days after quenching although subjected 1 to no treatment during that time the freshman basketball team lost a hard game on saturday to the york collegiate institute pass ers by the score of 35 to 15 the game was played at york before a crowd estimated to be between 900 and 1000 people the home team were fast passers and exceptionally good in long shots this makes the thirty-first victory for the y c i team among their victories being the freshman teams of the larger colleges and universities of the east during the first half the frosh team was at quite a disadvantage due to the slippery condition of the floor the score at the end of the first half was 15 to 3 with y c i leading in the second half the
