friday october 30 1953 brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pa new mark set as hp begins kenton sommer moulin rouge stars tonight toulouse-lautrec's world renown ed paintings of moulin rouge will live again in the dazzling movement and decor of an expected 1,000 cou ples attending the senior class fall houseparty formal prom tonight in grace hall both floors will resemble the famous parisienne nightclub of yesteryear dance music will be by the orchestras of stan kenton and george sommer lehigh's fall houseparty queen of 1953 will be crowned at midnight after being selected from eight of the most beautiful girls at the dance south mountain's loveliest will receive a 14-inch engraved loving cup and will appear at saturday's lehigh-bucknell game t toss out the football to get the second half underway picking the preliminary contest ants will be william snadecki wil liam corbet frederick knapp and steven yates all 54 while senior class president philip newman will team with the band leaders to select the queen members of the court will receive loving cups bearing the university seal this year's miss america miss evelyn ay pyramided to fame af ter becoming lehigh's spring house party queen in 1952 kenton who is interrupting his concert tour to appear here tonight will arrive by chartered bus at 6 p.m he is expected to make headquarters for his 20 piece band in allentown sommer and his 12-piece aggrega tion will arrive by private car from philadelphia at 8 p.m he will fea ture his sommer-time rhythm on the upper floor of the hall he is known for his ability to play re quests in both the modern and class * ie vein eight-foot dancing girl murals continental lanterns blue and golcj checked drapes together with red pon-pon bedecked pylons will form the backdrop for the affair which will run from 10 p.m to 2 a.m photo hat and flower check and soft drink concessions will be locat ed on the upper floor pictures will be 8 x 10 prints in folders and will cost 1.25 each ginger ale and pretzels will be available as re freshments tickets will be 5 at the door no flowers will be allowed at the dance which is an all-university function by jerry friedenheim the slide rules and books are beginning to gather dust as a record 1,000 women from more than 50 colleges and 16 states have invaded the lehigh university for the 1953 fall houseparty the barbers have been working all week on the bushes and the tuxedos have been aired in preparation for tonight's moulin rouge sans flours lehigh has taken on that coed look for 53 never before have so many lasses adorned the all male campus for a weekend planes busses trains cars and feet have swarmed the le high valley bringing 1,005 fair ladies for the biggest social event of the school year dravo dormitory will house 364 dates under its roof according to the new ruling in former years the girls stayed in the upper two floors of drinker and richards and scat tered throughout dravo and taylor the 29 eligible fraternities will house the remaining 614 weekend guests the houses have been vacated by the rent payers as in the past and the dates will take over the sleep ing quarters dravo will have a bell-hop sys tem whereby the girls will be sum moned when their escorts desire the number of these runners and chaperones in the dormitory has been increased over last year the lounges in richards and drinker will be open throughout houseparty to men and their dates although the living quarters will be closed off from the lounges the first floor lounges in dravo will be open to escorts at all times only front and back doors on the first floor will be unbarred to men the farthest extremities east west north and south from which the girls have travelled are boston santa barbara calif vermont and hollywood fla respectively naturally cedar crest and cen tenary emerge as the largest single contributors from educational insti tutions with a marshall plan with more than 200 females attending the women started arriving earl ier this afternoon from such far away places as florida manhattan beach calif they will be repre senting the following universities and colleges beaver connecticut college for women mount holyoke moravian wellesley smith univer sity of delaware vassar bucknell and new york university penn state university of see women page 2 engineers face bisons in hp clash tomorrow rain to dampen weekend fetes grab your umbrellas men it's gonna rain the law of averages has caught up with us blessed with perfect weather almost every weekend this fall we are due to be greeted by some precipita tion towards the end of the weekend it also will be cooler this week end according to the five-day fore cast of the weather bureau at the abe airport hey mother nature that makes i two wet houseparties in a row have a heart a completely revamped backfield will take the field for lehigh tomor row when they face bucknell in taylor stadium in an effort to halt the skid which has seen the engineers drop four out of five games this season coach bill leckonby will start harry stotz at quar terback dave walters at left halfback ron westfall at right half and marty maurer at full back tom gloede and joe kryla who have started in the first five games will form a second quartet with bob tcarrasquillo and howie keim lehigh will be trying to win from the bisons for the first time since 1950 in 1951 an unbeaten bucknel team ran roughshod over the engi neers in taylor stadium 47-7 last year at lewisburg fumbles at un timely moments cost lehigh a 28-6 decision this year the two teams are both having rough going bur-k nell's record is almost exactly the same as lehigh's their one victory out of five games has come at the expense of buffalo whom they shut out 35-0 the bisons have
