any real peace must have adequate regard for three things freedom truth and tradition asserted dr charles h malik at founder's day exercises sunday dr malik ambassador of lebanon to the united states and chief lebanese delegate to the united nations received an honorary doctor of laws degree eugene ormandy conductor of the philadelphia or chestra was given an honorary doctor of humane letters degree also presented at the commence ment exercises were 65 bachelor's degrees 43 master's and three doc tor's degrees in his commencement address titled the conquest of confusion dr malik listed the international situation among three spheres one touching intimately our life con cerning which truth — real solid truth — may be in doubt personal existence and the realm of god and the human soul are the other two spheres he declared physical non-aggression is not peace nor is it a state of peace where freedom is in jeopardy truth in contempt and the sons of men delight in rebelling against the past the greatest evil in personal ex istence dr malik claimed is not the imperfections and frailties of hu man nature but the possible despair we may fall into because of our constant fall from the stature to which we are called we can obtain a certain knowledge of god through rea son he said but reason is weak and i am not at all prepared to say that only philosophers know god i trust the pure and simple of heart infinitely more than the so phisticated philosophers when it comes to the vision of god god in his grace and certainty is the rock on which we live he claim ed explaining the • need for the search to conquer confusion dr malik said the rarest phenomenon today is the man who is certain the man who krfbws the man who stands on firm ground who sees the passing in tlie light of bachelor's degrees 43 for mas ter's degrees and three for doc tor of philosophy degrees ap proximately 40 were present at the ceremonies the others not choosing to make the trip to bethlehem received their degree in absentia * * * those graduates who were pres ent evidently did not have any in structions in how to flip their tassels after receiving their degrees before graduation the tassel should be worn on the right after receiving the de gree it should be flipped to the left most of sunday's graduates revers ed the procedure * * * sunday the band played at the founder's day exercises the performance was so good that at the end eugene ormandy con ductor of the philadelphia or chestra who received an honor ary degree told them you played magnificently * * * those renting caps and gowns were charged a sales tax of three cents * * * dr malik was beaming through out the playing of the alma mater he probably thought the american university of beruit's alma mater which is the same tune was being played cycmide catches frosh culprits three freshmen were brought be fore cyanide's judiciary committee last thursday in drown hall for violation of one or more freshman rules the committee of five men headed by gene brady 55 found all three guilty all three had been freely cut ting freshman orientation class es both during freshman week and those sponsored by arcadia during the first three weeks of regular classes one had been frequently seen without his dink on the dinkless freshman was order ed to write a lengthy essay on the topic why freshmen should wear dinks he along with the other two violators were to clean up de bris left in grace hall after the charity ball after the judiciary meeting bra dy commented the freshmen did not seem to realize the importance of the rules set up by cyanide but i want to emphasize that cyanide in tends to enforce these rules and in the future harsher punishments will be dealt out to flagrant violators shown dancing to the music o lee vincents oichesud are some of the more than 350 couples in attendance at saturday night's charity ball the decoration theme of brown feathers and white balloons was arranged by prof quirk of the art realistic attitude dean congdon explains in this latter the following letter is the second received from the dean in the let ter published last issue he explained the delegation of powers from the board of trustees through the facul ty and deans office and the conse quent responsibilities placed on each to the brown and white at the request of brown and white i submitted a statement for publication last friday that state ment explained how the responsibi lities and authority for disciplinary arid social controls of college stu dents and student affairs are derived and where they reside the state ment was limited strictly to the question asked of me may i now supplement that rather legalistic statement this is an explanation of what might pc called my philosophy of stu dent participation in govern ment the term student government is often misleading it contains an im plication that students have unlim ited authority to run all college ai see dean page 5 the gay pariesienne mood of mou lin rouge will form the backdrop for the music of the stan kenton and george sommers orchestras at the houseparty formal oct 30 from 10 p.m to 2 a.m in grace hall the senior class sponsoring organization will inaugurate a new feature by not allowing flowers in any form at the dance tickets will cost 5 kenton and sommers will provide continuous music on the two floors of the hall and the feature of the evening will be the selection of the 1953 fall houseparty queen the queen this year will have additional unannounced royal duties to perform at halftime of the bucknell-l ehi g h houseparty football game stan kenton who acquired his fame by introducing progressive jazz is touring the country now with a jazz band designed strictly for concerts and a dance band with which he specializes in college dances recently kenton has recorded a new brand of music aimed at those who don't go strictly for a fast beat the dance committee will request kenton to play melodies for danc ing when he occupies the center of attraction on the lower floor of grace hall kenton returns after be ing well received at the 1950 fall houseparty on the top floor of the hall george sommers will hold sway with his dance brand of music which has made him a favorite at many col leges throughout the east in the spring of 1952 som mers and his musicians filled in at houseparty after the tragic death of bob shebley left the dance committee with only one band for the convenience of the danc ers arrangements have been made for soft drink coat checking and photo concessions exact decorations to fit in with the moulin rouge theme have not been announced a varied program of dramatic sketches and readings by claude rains noted stage and screen actor will be the opening program of the 18th consecutive season of the stu dent concerts-lectures series at 8 p.m friday in grace hall one of the features of his of ferings will be tennyson's enoch arden set to music es pecially written by richard straus for dramatic presentation jack maxin will be the piano soloist and accompanist for rains although a definite program has not been scheduled since rains will announce each number he has ad vised the committee of other possi ble scenes included in this group ing are either the raven or tell tale heart by poe the wife of bath by chaucer journey of the magi by t s eliot and builders of america by edward shenton the musical score for the last number was arranged by harl mc donald of the philadelphia orches tra another possibility is ballad of reading goal by
