do you any good the senior class cabinet in an un precedented move as far as lehigh houseparty dances go voted friday not to allow flowers in any form to be worn at this fall's houseparty dance oct 30 in grace hall the move according to class president phillip newman was made in an at tempt to help the dance patrons eco nomize with the thought in mind that more could attend the dance houseparty will be petitioned for on an old social function petition as recommended by the faculty-stu dent committee on student activi ties the cabinet voted initial plans for houseparty also were discussed last week but plans for bands programs a queen deco rations and financial considerations were not released two previous hp bands according to jay greenstone chairman of the band selection committee will be back on campus after gaining le high student approval in past beth lehem visits chairman newman announced the dance ticket price would remain at 5 as in the past but figures a theo retical saving to each ticket pur chaser of from 2-5 through the in stallation of the uniform flower ban chairmen of the dance committees are chairman philip newman band jay greenstone program john wiltsie tickets alvin lewis decorations john pavia conces sions peter barba and robert bell reception donald bott queen's committee frederick knapp finan cial martin pearl and publicity william haase lehigh reports to fcda about atomic damage lehigh's institute of research has just completed a year-long study of the damage and casualties to civil ians and their property and the facilities needed for civilized living according to its director dr harvey a neville the project was completed for the federal civil defense ad ministration and is the second of a group of collective protec tion projects the findings of the reports were analyzed in washington last week for officials of fcda department of defense and representatives of other government agencies the nine-volume report included three categories of the effects of large-scale air attack lehigh's stud ies deal with physical damage to structures facilities and persons stanford university reported on the effects of bombing on the general economy and social organization and on the morale and behavior of humans the attack experiences of hi roshima nagasaki tokyo ham burg dusseldorf and cologne were studied by the lehigh group the report showed that u.s experiments and the hiro shima and nagasaki experience have demonstrated the possibili ty of providing simple and rela tively inexpensive shelter from the prompt radiation effects of an atomic explosion at reason able distances from the blasts overall supervision of the project was provided by fcida's weapons effets division director dr h ken neth gayer and by robert o shreve of stanford in addition to the three directors of the collective protection project at lehigh other local people on the staff include benjamin m nead jo seph m clifford jr and misses beverly bond and carolyn esch bach other aspects such as economic effects due to industrial interrup tions and the crippling of shipping both by water and rail were also analyzed the effects and prevention of the concerts lectures series committee are ar thur brody 54 martin ginsburg 55 robert miller 54 edwin scheetz 54 kenneth todd 54 and lawrence wallen 55 faculty mem bers are charles moravec univer sity news editor and profs william schempf and clarence shook representatives from 29 fraterni ties took a unanimous stand friday night in favor of the student-facul ty committee on student activities recommendation that its old peti tion be used when petitioning for social functions according to information ob tained from those attending the closed meeting several houses wondered if use of the old peti tion would mean automatic re fusal of their wishes for social functions president ray har tenstine stated that according to a letter from the dean's office only the new petitions would be accepted several of the houses have plan ned for dad's day festivities and ex pressed specific concern that parents and alumni would become cognizant of the present situation by jerry friedenheim the big four — ifc idc town council and arcadia — decided as of friday night to use the old petition forms in spite of letters from dean wray h congdon and dean byron c hayes stating that only new peti tions would be recognized for living groups that wish to hold parties saturday night this was the situation as the b&w went to press sunday action started wednesday night when arcadia voted that the peti tion drawn up by dean hayes was illegal and to send it back to committee the petition was signed by the committee on student activities without the committee's ever having seen the revised document arcadia sent letters to all living groups the following day advising them to use the old petitions until the new ones had gone through the proper channels the student-faculty commit tee on student activities met friday afternoon without its ex off icio chairman dean hayes the committee passed two mo tions in connection with the petition 1 the student activities com mittee not having reviewed the so cial and houseparty petition now bearing its name requests the ex officio chairman dean hayes to remove its name from the form 2 the student activities commit tee recommends that the
