brown feather merchants will be knocking at your door from monday to saturday for the annual campus chest charity drive in the hopes of surpassing their 1953 goal of 5,000 with a minimum donation of one dollar the donor is permit ted to wear the brown feather in his cap but chest authorities anticipate a contribution of three dollars from each stu dent for which he will receive a ticket to the charity ball on saturday night featured at the ball will be the band of lee vincent which has played at college dances throughout pennsylvania alvin lewis 54 and wallace butler 54 co-chairman of the cam pus chest stressed the fact that con tribution to the chest is a collective contribution to all the charities in this area this relieves students of the nuisance of being solicited by several different town charity groups at different times some of the institutions bene fitting from the chest are st luke's hospital red cross can cer fund march of dimes heart fund and boy scouts a donor may designate to which organization his contribution is to be given so that the chest may swell even more the university has promised to donate all proceeds from campus traffic violations incurred during is there a god will be the title of the sermon which rev raymond e fuessle the new l.u chaplain will preach this sunday at the 11 a.m service as the second sermon in the new series which the chaplain announced last sunday morning rev fuessle came to the cam pus last august from bard col lege where he served as chap lain for the past four years he is a graduate of new york uni versity class of 1930 and he re ceived his bachelor of divinity degree from virginia episcopal seminary alexandria va in 1933 the recently announced series of sermons will deal with the principal beliefs worship-practices and gene ral attitudes of the major religious groups functioning in the united states some of the questions which will be considered in this new series of sermons are the following what do we believe about jesus christ is he merely a spiritual leader or is he the son of god savior and redeem er what is the holy spirit and should we believe in god in terms of a holy trinity what is the church what about the creeds of the church and what is their pur pose does adherence to a creed in dicate intellectual stagnation or does refusal indicate an immature and confused state of mind what is the meaning of wor ship and what are its forms what are sacraments and how are they administered by vari ous churches why do some churches have government by a pope or bishops or pastors and alpha chi rho boasts 26 members low house bills large pledge class a revised social petition which contains several insertions and word-revisions authored by dean byron c hayes was denounced and declared illegal at the second regu lar meeting of arcadia wednesday evening buell miller 55 reporting as chairman of the arcadia stu dent activities committee an nounced that the new petition had already been put into use by the dean's office in fact that some of the living groups had already filled them out for sub mission the petition which has the name of the student activities committee attached as endorsing tho petition was never voted upon by the com mittee according to miner miller also reported that on being queried concerning the use of the commit tee's name dean hayes replied that in doing so he was acting in the ca pacity 01 chairman of the committee on student activities as well as dean of students it was mentioned that five frater nity houses have already had peti tions refused and were told that such would be the case until the re spective houses elected officers suit able to the dean's office elliott barnett 54 proposed that the petition for social functions are received from the committee on student activi ties since not approved by a ma jority of the members of the committee composed of three faculty members and three stu dents be rejected and sent back to the committee and that ar cadia strongly recommends that an open hearing be called and that all interested parties be in vited to attend the motion was passed unanimously president ralph meerwarth 54 pointed out to the members of ar cadia that this action was being taken principally because of the principle involved and not because arcadia was opposed to the changes in the petition although that may be the case ralph hamilton 55 then propos ed that in view of the fact that the new petition has not been approved by arcadia student activities com mittee that old petitions be sent out to living groups by arcadia for use the motion was unanimously passed the exact changes in the petition were read by miller to arcadia among them are the following the insertion of a line concerning guests their approximate number whether or not they are members of the particular living group and their dates just members or speci fically who they are the adding of banquets to func tions which must be petitioned for the revision of policy concerning houseparty petitions which now ac cording to the revised petition see activities page 3 a series to acquaint freshmen with the houses the crow house is lo cated between brodhead and montclair aye and can accommodate comfortably 30 men designed to serve as an informa tive and helpful aid to freshmen in breaking down the barrier of unfa miliarity surrounding lehigh frater nities this is the first in a series of articles which will appear in each issue of the brown and white it is our hope that the discus sions of individual fraternities will better acquaint the men of 1957 with the houses and the fraternity system there are 30 national social fra ternities at lehigh 12 of which are located on campus and 18 off fresh men may be contacted at any time but can be rushed only during a spe cial two-week period in february upperclassmen may be rushed at any time saturday night of houseparty is the only time freshmen are allowed in fraternity houses during the first semester they are not allowed to live in the house until their sopho more year these rules are strictly en forced by the school and by the interfraternity council situation and that it was being rectified mai gross 54 business manager of the 1954 epito me announced that if any of the members of the group knew of a person who would like his money refunded he would willingly ar range such a refund if notified gross reported on a group of freshmen who have organized for the purpose of attempting to im prove lamberton hall he said that initiative for the formation of the group had been given by his invita tion to 26 freshmen who attended the first meeting of arcadia this year and asked a number of ques tions concerning lamberton to meet with him and discuss the prob lem from a constructive point of view at a meeting which lasted an hour and a quarter attended by some 26 freshmen and a few upperclassmen a chairman was elected to head a committee on procedures the committee then drafted a letter which is to be sent to mr wood manager of lamberton hall inviting him to see box lunches page 5 first fraternity in the spotlight is alpha chi rho location is an important feature of alpha chi rho situated at 223 w packer aye between brodhead and montclair ayes it's off campus but close enough so that classes are just a matter of minutes away
