has developed from a ■small colony on the eastern shore t to the wonderful country which the brown and white dribblers opened the season with a game with moravian college handing them a jolt in a one-sided score of 50 to 18 coach baldwin's coaching was evident throughout the game the team presenting a different style of attack from last year and had the north side boys at their mercy throughout the game the princeton tigers handed the team their first set-back when they ran up a 35 to 11 score the le high five played the champions al most to a stand-still during the first half but in the second lingle was removed on account of personal fouls taking with him the aggres sive spirit and brainy team-work of his colleagues henschen and hart ung were the big guns of the de fense their close guarding keep ing the tigers score down while lingle was responsible for the to tal score after a closely-contested game with lehigh leading twice the uni versity of toronto's champion can adian team finally nosed out the brown and white 35 to 32 the lehigh five seemed to lack their usual team-work in this game there were too many long shots at tempted when the ball could have been brought closer to the basket henschen was the star of the game with his passing and defense the next day the team won its w^gt victory in foreign territory in twtra?s4£f ea^n 8 swarthmore in a tight gairstft ■y g^^tra periods were necessary to deciaea&h the winner lees lingle and hen schen were removed from the game on account of personal fouls and it was due to weinstein's stellar game that the brown and white won when the team journeyed to west point the military boys handed them a43to 13 defeat whirlwind passing won the game for the army lehigh was bewildered the first half but in the second they picked up and almost outplayed their hosts gettysburg was the next victim the brown and white coming up from behind and defeating the bat , tlefield collegians 28 to 23 er ratic shooting kept lehigh from scoring but when the team found 1 itself there was no holding it hen schen and lees were the outstand ing players the scrappy guard's field . goals and lees's fouls won the game lehigh's allentown neighbors continued on page four freshman wrestlers hold preliminary trial there are 196 men on the roll of the class of 1923 and out of that number only about 125 men have handed in their ballots for the 1924 basketball practice owing to the coming examinations has slacken ed considerably during the past week captain lingle has been in charge of the team as coach bald win is out of town for the week and has been holding workouts on monday wednesday and friday no regular practices are sched uled for next week though all mem bers of the squad are requested to appear at the gymnasium as many afternoons as possible in order to keep in condition for the scrim mages which will start soon after the close of examinations two very important games are scheduled for the near future the clash with the strong bucknell team comes on february bth the first day of the second term and rut gers will be met two days later sat urday february 10th coach bald win has decided in order to prepare for these games to resume daily practice the first tuesday following examinations febr th i the team has made very credita ■bi e stßwings so far this season and 1 when thelfi^to'r^fiaic a thill & ; of the past it is hoped that'te 1?^1 ?^ ; may even better the present stand ' ing the lehigh swimming team thus far has not had a very brilliant sea son but there has been a very mark ed improvement in the work of all the members since its first meet the improved work promises to show itself in several victories for the brown and white squad the season was opened with a meet with princeton and although we were beaten by a score of 56 to 18 it was mainly due to a squad in rather weak condition meeting a powerful squad for its first match consequently the score did not show the true merits of each team the second meet was held with rutgers and in meeting them we made a very creditable showing against one of the most evenly-balanced teams of the country each of the men who won places in the intercollegi ate meet last year came through with a victory in addition to the veterans of the team some new ma terial has been added which is in j every way almost equal fb the more experienced men last saturday the natators were again defeated by west point but by a very small margin showing ijie steady improvement of coach ' lukeni^eru lehigh was defeat ed by the ca^e^-l^^year by a larger score yet we w<mtliera | collegiate championship the next meet will be held with swarthmore one of the members of . the league and with the steady im . provement shown already lehigh < should again register a victory even : if two of its stars captain under : wood and astarita will not be able . to compete in their events in all though the matches so far have been . rather unsuccessful the indications . point to a very successful comple tion of the season for the team h g harmon 25 so far has i been the mainstay of the team tak ing two first places and one second place in the rutgers meet and much is expected of him in the future remembrance at lorenz theatre tryouts for the freshman wrest ling team were held last wednes day afternoon for the men who are to make the trip with the team next saturday when they will grapple with the frosh wrestlers of the uni versity of pennsylvania in the 145-pound class brinser threw anderson in 3 minutes and 25 seconds in the 115-pound class meurer won by a slight advantage over sar son in 3 minutes and 30 seconds in the 125-pound class harris threw mckenzie in 1 minute and 45 seconds there still is a scarcity of ma terial for the 175 pound heavy weight class and there is still plen ty of opportunity for making the team the team is coming around in fine shape and after the defeat last saturday at the hands of the blair academy matmen the outlook for a successful season is very bright fraternity pool tournament starts mustard & cheese try outs to be held soon continued on page four epitome these ballots were sup posed to have been in about two < weeks ago but the period of time ' for preparation had been lengthen ed till january 20th making the re < maining 71 men who have been negligent towards this issue about i 5 days late figures show that about one-half of the senior class only have paid their assessment and a little over the 125 above-mention ed men have responded to the call i for pictures it is absolutely neces sary for the committee to know how many and which men wish to be in the epitome the roll and dummy for the se nior section must be made up this week-end only three more weeks , remain after finals to compile all this material for the whole senior , section a great deal of work is connected with this and if it is to be done well plenty of time must be taken it is up to the class of 1923 to rli their h'>:re in heinino the rrwn h--x tji m n -.. x c iy»-i v ij ■■mittee by turning in their ballofs assessments pictures and snap shots only by co-operation can the senior section be put across there are a few men who have not made an attempt to let the editor know whether they wish to appear in the epitome and unless some thing is heard from them they will not be included in the class roll those men who have not yet giv en any information as to whether they wish to be among the rest of the class should communicate with j w gardy editor of the senior class book at the alpha chi rho house immediately the staff expects to have the class book published on time this year but all material must be turn ed in to do it chi psi basketballers defeat sigma phi the chi psi basketball team won their second round match last wed nesday afternoon when they defeat ed the sigma phi quintet 19 to 15 chi psi piled up a commanding lead in the latter part of the first half which ended with the score of 12 to 6 in favor of the chi psi the sigma phi put up a game fight in the second half to even up the score but could not overcome this lead due to the close guarding of the chi psi five bond the sigma phi center was the high scorer of the game with four field goals and three fouls to his credit hendershott played a stellar game for the chi psi and broke up a great the evening of saturday february 3rd against the university of penn sylvania will be a welcome respite from the strenuous seven days of finals last year was a successful sea son for the philadelphians against the brown and white a fact unpre cedented in the history of the wrest ling competitions between these two colleges the lehigh matmen with the thought of last year's defeat in mind are looking forward to a chance of revenge their hopes are stimulated by the very encouraging result of last saturday's meet with princeton in which only one bout was lost ; that being won by the j captain of the opposing team from a jhftn who wr tyi?kilip b'i&.flrsti appearance in an intercollegiate meet to date nothing has been beard of perm's line-up or comparative strength evidently they are still holding their try-outs regarding the probable lehigh line-up for this coming meet noth ing definite can be said until the conclusion of the try-outs as this issue goes to press the preliminary bouts have been run off with the following results : — 115-pound — reynolds threw bo hum time 7:35 125-pound class — olcott won from wash-burn advantage 1 00 lang threw meyers time 5:30 125 semi-final — olcott won from lang 2:20 advantage 158 — beck threw kaman 1 46 175 — carlisle won from beitzel 8:46 advantage it is interesting to note that in the princeton meet all the lehigh men with the exception of the two heavier classes were veterans of one two and three years experi ence this fact augurs well for the coming season for in no sport does experience stand at such a premium as in wrestling an additional ad vantage lies in the fact that the light-weight men are the greatest in amount of experience and there fore cam l>e counted on for early points first blood for a wrestling team is as much to be sought as in any other sport suffice it to say however that no matter who represents the brown and white matmen against penm on february 3rd the visitors will have their work cut out for them there is present in practically every mem ber of the wrestling squad as well as among the student body a desire to see perm once more relegated to the realms of the ever vanquished and incidentally to put another spoke in the league championship wheel by virtue of last week's impres sive win over the princeton tigers the lehigh grapplers are odds-on favorites to gain the verdict next saturday the final choice of the competi tors for the cast and chorus of the mustard and cheese production will be held in drown hall on thursday night february bth those who wish to try out for the cast must be able to sing notices will be posted on all the campus bulletin boards and any special instructions or requirements will be posted on the mustard and cheese bulletin board in drown hall the produc tion will be held on the second mon day after easter so regular rehears als will take place immediately af ter the selection of the cast and chorus in remembrance the big gold wyn special coming to the loßenz theatre on thursday friday arid saturday this week rupert hughes has again demonstrated himself a film craftsman of the first order this new photoplay is a companion picture to mr hughes's screen masterpiece the old nest which was one of the few r really big pic tures of last year remembrance does for father what the old nest did for mo ther ; it presents the head of the house in a sympathetic light he comes first after everyone else but in the end he comes out strong pop grout is the head of a house hold which has developed into spenders ; they look upon pop as a good thing to be worked to the limit — and pop works to the limit for his family when the limit is reached pop has an ill ness which nearly carries him off to a better world and his family awake to a belated sense of his im portance in their little world of the present delta upsilon opened the inter fraternity pool tournament last saturday afternoon by decisively downing the chi phi cue artists two matches to none the match was played on the drown hall tables and officially opens the tournament hartmann and roberts by con sistent work managed to come through with an easy win over wal lace and quinlan of chi phi by a 50 to 35 count titus of delta upsilon also took his singles match in fine style by winning handily over quinlan the final score being 50 to 30 brown and white bethlehem pa friday january
