a pre-game picnic and a post game celebration has been planned by the lehigh club of new york for tomorrow afternoon lehigh alumni their families and students have been invited to meet for a pre-game picnic in the northeast area of the up per field adjacent to the parking lot at baker field refresh ments and lunch must be sup plied by the individuals the brown and white band is ex pected to be on hand after the game a victory cele bration will be held at the colum bia university club 4 w 43rd st new york city admission will be 1 to cover club rental and party snacks cocktails highballs and beer will be served at very reasonable prices the band is also expected to play at this celebration special issue this is a special issue for the columbia game only regular publication will begin tuesday all notices advertising and copy must be in the brown and white offices drown hall by 1 p.m sunday follow directions arrowed map to columbia's field tomorrow with a wealth of talent in the backfleld led by joe kryla the team's leading ground gainer in 1951 george o'brien a starting half-back for two years and dave walters and ron westfall both let ter winners last fall the team should have plenty of punch at the half back spots jules clark and tom gloede both are experienced at the quarter-back position while marty maurer should be a standout at the fullback slot maurer is a doubtful starter tomor row because of an injury the line however will be in experienced for the most part and not very deep at one end the brown and white has captain tommy gunn who holds the lehigh record for pass catching in one season gunn went 642 yards with his pass snaring last season bobby clark is expected to hold down the left end position coach bill leckonby said however that clark may not be able to start sat urday because of injuries jimplac atoris or george gray will probably get the starting nod beside clark on the right side of the line will be john cable cable a 195-pounder saw a fair amount of action last year at the right guard spot willard hansen should get the starting spot hansen was on the squad last year but he was not a let ter winner john henderson a starter at of fensive center last season will take over the double duty chores at cen ter returning at left guard will be harvey semilof a 210-pounder who saw plenty of action on offense last year barney wiley a junior who did not play too much last year due to injuries looks like the starter at left tackle other linemen who will probably see a good deal of action are harry garfinkel and bob miles who is hampered by injuries suf fered in practice coach leckonby is not too op timistic about the squad as it looks now he feels that it is worse than last year's team which may be due to the single platoon columbia will have a strong line facing lehigh's split t attack see lu line page 2 the brown and white band con sisting of 90 members will march tomorrow afternoon at the lehigh coiumbia game at baker field with more than 20,000 persons txpeeied to attend liie opening tut of the season the largest lehigh band in four years will make its appearance about 1:45 p.m the band will come on the field with its standard precision drill fol lowed by columbia and lehigh songs at halftime the band will bring back summer memories with the theme vacations and different ways to celebrate the band will start the six-minute exhibition by forming a moving row-boat down a river this will be followed by a sail boat going up the river and con cluded by a fishing pole with hook and reel in conclusion the band will form the goblet and play the alma mater the financial angle was cleared at the arcadia meeting monday night an announcement was made that the trip will be finan cially covered since the com bined music clubs and the band were in the process of getting their accounts straightened so that appropriations for the year can be made by the student faculty finance committee trouble arose when no account ings were made in the spring for the past year one of the missing accountings was that of the record fund the records were sold with the promotion and publicity handled by arcadia which in return was to receive a percentage this commit ment was denied last spring by the music department director of athletics percy l sad ler agreed to finance the columbia trip on condition that his depart ment would be paid back as soon as appropriations were made this fall two meetings with representa tives of the music department were see band page 2 tilt is 4th with lions this will be the fourth meeting between lehigh and columbia in a spasmodic rivalry that began in 1889 the engineers have won one of the three games played , twenty years have elapsed since the last game between the two schools in 1932 and 1933 games were played before large crowds in baker field the site of this year's contest lehigh won the first meeting be tween the two as the lions were swamped 51 to 6 however in the next two games the brown and white fell victim to two of the more powerful teams coached by lou little who was then beginning his tenure with columbia on oct 2 1932 the light blue which had held its 1931 opponents to just 24 points ran all over the engineers 41-6 the only bright spot for lehigh fans was the punt ing of chick halstead one kick traveled 95 yards columbia all but knocked lehigh out of big time football on oct 7 1933 when it scored a smashing 39-0 shutout the defeat spurred agitation to have i,ehigh return to an easier sched ule paul short now athletic business manager was the engineers star that day playing quarterback he accounted for most of lehigh's long gains according to that year's brown and white the lehigh band 96 pieces strong gave a splendid ex hibition between halves playing and drilling well they spelled out le high completely while playing making the columbia band show up rather poorly the columbia - lehigh football game will be played
