three floors renovation to give drown hall that new look cost 19,000 president martin d whitaker and col ralph s newman re turned friday from a trip to tur ner air force base where they vis ited lehigh air science groups they were very active and seemed very enthusiastic r commented dr whitaker the students were loaded into eight c-46 troop carriers and flown to lawson air force base columbus georgia where they witnessed demon strations in air attacks while he was there they saw how aircraft are used to attack targets to dr whitaker it seemed that the future officers were doing more flying this summer than in previous years many are being taken on jet flights and all will fly in b-29's he also visited in structional classes there which are similar to courses given dur ing the school year here the students i spoke to found the food commendable but they were somewhat bothered by the heat also they have to get up between 4:30 and 5 in the morn ing so that they should be in an excellent frame of mind for 8 o'clock classes next year dr whitaker added dr whitaker alternates be tween the army and air force bases each summer as part of this summer's trip he also vis windows should be completed by the middle of august according to superintendent of building and grounds andrew w litzenberger all work except for plastering will be done by the university workers men's toilets will replace the pres ent women's toilets on the third floor the women's toilet will be moved to the first floor replacing the police offices new army instructors . . . 1500 yards from the mock targets of trains buildings truck con voys and three old world war ii airplanes last year's show which cost several millions of dollars was climaxed by two bombings the first was by a b-17 which dropped its capacity load of 12 500-pound bombs the second was by a b-36 that also dropped its capacity load — 132 500-pound bombs ited the air university in montgomery ala and eglin air force base in valparaiso fla to watch a flying power exhibition the aerial fire power show demonstration dr whitaker at tended apparently is an annual affair last year live ammunition was used in all the weapons in instruction under the tutelage of asso ciate prof rocco j trcsolini of the government department ten students are taking the course during the first six-week session of summer school the idea of such a course was conceived during the winter by prof ernst b schulz head of the government department and enthu siastically approved by dean rob ert p more of the arts and science college people talk about civil rights and lehigh among to offer civil first in country rights course civil liberties without knowing what civil rights are and we want to make our students aware of them so that they will have a better appreci ation of them dr tresolini said in explaining why the course is being given the university of illinois and laf ayette college both offered the course within the past year and the university of pennsylvania will be offering it next fall dr tresolini has divided the course into two parts the first deals with substantive rights such as freedom of speech reli gion press and assembly the see rights page three warrant 1 officers . . . drown hall is getting that 1953 look this summer as work began last week on the top three floors of the old building at a cost of ap proximately 19,000 the east wing of the first floor will provide a large conference room and small theater modern folding doors will make it possi ble for the large room to be di vided into three smaller rooms the chaplain's office will be mov ed to the second floor mrs mora vec's present office with the music festival room will make up the new office the television room will be the middle room in the west wing twenty persons will be able to watch the set comfortably the north room of that wing will be used for concessions the stage at the east end of the floor will be turned over and remodeled to carry the pool and ping-pong table the third floor west wing will be made into offices and rooms for locker files for the different societies the renovations which will also include venetian blinds for all the major robert o lambert left and warrant officer william c farrell newly appointed military science and tactics instructors are shown before they discussed rotc and major foreign problems lehigh s new rotc instructors discuss korea red china turkey two new instructors in the mili tary science and tactics depart ment arrived in school recently one a korean veteran the other back from service in turkey major robert o lambert a graduate of western maryland college served in korea from 1950 to 1952 and warrant officer william c farrell who was sta tioned with a turkish engineer school from 1948 to 1952 both expressed that rotc courses are valuable to the security of the united states with the present draft system being what it is rotc gives a stu camel caravan may stop here for radio show the camel caravan starring vaughn monroe and the sauter finegan orchestra is rumored to be gypsying its way to lehigh the lat ter part of september the caravan a nationally broad cast radio show originates from a different college each week the last few years it has been on the air from 7 to 7:30 p.m saturday nights but will be featured tuesday nights at ten when it resumes its fall schedule vaughn monroe and his orchestra have been doing the broadcasts however the band and monroe part ed ways after the fordham prom june 5 the singer is now working on his own students will remember the mon roe aggregation from its appearance here at last fall's houseparty dent a good opportunity to finish his academic work as well as secure a commission commented
