. . . from the ground up the new all steel stands being added to the south-side of taylor sta dium are finally taking shape the new addition will include press radio-television booths and men's and women's lavatories improve ments are also planned for the present concrete stands scholarship list posted 186,000 awarded to 60 scholarships valued at 186,100 were awarded to 60 high school and prep school seniors who will enter lehigh this september from 12 states dean wray h congdon chairman of the committee on schol arships has announced there are 24 different type awards ranging from partial tui tion grants to a maximum of see awards page 2 partment of classical languages will spend a few weeks in vir ginia prof robert p more dean of the college of arts and scien ces will make a trip to alaska prof harold v anderson of the department of chemistry is taking a trip to england later in the summer the majority of members of the chemistry department are devoting most of their time to research with 35 active projects going on at the present time dr bradford willard professor and head of the department of geol ogy will be traveling in the mari time provinces and will be doing geological work for the pennsyl vania topographic and geologic survey other members of the geology de partment on postmen's holidays include dr lawrence whitcomb who will teach at the conservation laboratory at pennsylvania state college this month dr j donald ryan who will be engaged in sum mer field work for the united states geological survey in the black hills of south dakota prof george r see some work page 4 acardia has allocated 12,385 to nine campus organizations and is waiting for final approval from the board of trustees the brown and white has re ceived the largest allotment 5000 while arcadia will receive 3000 one-fifth of which will be turned over to drown hall for improvements mustard and cheese and delta omicron theta debating society were allocated 1,700 and 825 re spectively the roving fund and the class of 1954 were given 500 while the other three classes will be re ceiving 200 each another 260 was appropriated to wlrn five additional organizations which requested money for 1953-54 were not given any grants because the combined student faculty com mittees on student club finances felt that the best interests of the student body would be served if each organization if and when it ran into financial difficulty would request funds from the roving fund conspicuous in not receiving funds were the combined music clubs and the brown and white band no request was made by the see finance page 2 workmen are placing sheets of steel over the structure of new 4000 seat addition to stadium this will increase the seating to 15,000 the field is being moved 10 yards to assure full view to standees mrs r w brubaker is shown above coaching four local students in reading this is part of a course in diagnostic and remedial teaching under dr robert norris of the department of education below three local teachers are shown practicing the same work twenty-one teach ers afre taking the course and 43 students are in turn learning from them see story in column three left education course benefits teachers area youngsters forty-three youngsters in grades five through nine in local schools are being given instructions in read ing english and arithmetic as a part of a diagnostic and remedial teach ing course for graduate adult teach ers prof robert b norris of the education department disclosed tuesday with the cooperation of su perintendent john hedge and school psychologist ellen good man thess youths were volun teered by their parents for the course because of their difficulty see remedial page 2 profs parents a team visitor tells workshop as educators we have the same job as parents or the people who work in the v miss orrielle mur phy of the guidance laboratory of teachers college columbia univer sity told members of the guidance workshop at lehigh monday defining an educator as a per son who is helping boys and girls to mature in our american culture the speaker said this is see parents page 2 the new stands which will hold an additional 4,000 persons in tay lor stadium are quickly taking shape the new stands being erect ed on the south side of the field will increase the seating capa city to approximately 15,000 and should be finished by sept 1 work on the stands began the lat ter part of april however progress was stopped when the construction crew went on strike for four weeks in may at that time they were ahead of schedule and hopes were that the job would be completed by taylor stands nearly complete lehigh -
