guarding by hartung and fast shooting by lingle fea ture slowly played game captain schwartzbach and coxe register falls while but one lehigh entry loses the athletic committee at le high desires to make the following statement of facts without comment except to express their appreciation of the very sportsmanlike attitude of the navy and their regret that colgate's failure to notify us earlier of their intention resulted in our inability to take on a game with princeton which was offered to us in december 1921 a telegram was received from colgate asking lehigh to play a game in bingham ton n v on november 4th 1922 lehigh answered agreeing to play this game provided colgate con tracted to play a return game in bethlehem on november 3rd 1923 continued on page three on december 13th 1922 colgate advised lehigh over the phone that they would not play lehigh on november 3rd 1923 as their syra cuse game came on november 17th and they were afraid the lehigh game would result in injuries to their team if lehigh insisted on playing the game colgate desired bosey defends college religion the 1924 epitome which has been progressing rapidly for the past few weeks is being compiled in good shape by the board of edi tors this work however to be completed on time must have the support of the various living groups and individuals some have not yet turned in their photographs and the board is very desirous of hav ing them so that the book will be in the hands of the printer on time up to date but two men have signified their intention to compete for art editor of the 1924 epitome there is still time for any junior desiring to come out to report to e t adams at the chi psi house in order to make the book more interesting more snap-shots are needed and all those having good jones will help the board by turning j them in as soon as possible the i competition for the business mana ger is also well under way the competitors have been able to get i a number of new advertisements and will soon be ready to take sub scriptions for the annual soccer team may enter big league present standard based upon progressive principles and not theology topic very appropriate the annual meeting of the penn sylvania intercollegiate soccer league was held in houston hall at the university of pennsylvania philadelphia on saturday evening all of the five-member institutions pennsylvania haverford swarth more lafayette and lehigh were represented and some important resolutions adopted lehigh having concluded the sea son with a lead of two points over lafayette the nearest contender for the title was awarded the champion ship instructions were given the secretary-treasurer to have the cup engraved and forwarded to mana ger c m alford of lehigh when the cup arrives it will be placed in the trophy room in taylor gym nasium ; it becomes the permanent property of the college winning it five times a championship ban ner similar to those given for la crosse triumphs will accompany the cup and will be hung in the trophy room a resolution was passed that the pennsylvania intercollegiate soccer league adopt the laws of the game as adopted by the intercollegiate soccer league and published in the official intercollegiate soccer guide for 1922-1923 the schedule for next fall was discussed and at the present time is practically comple ted and will be published in an early issue of the brown and white officers elected for the coming year are president c m alford of lehigh vice-president f w davison of lafayette and secre tary-treasurer c h frazier of haverford lehigh again emerged victorious from a basketball tilt with ford ham played last saturday afternoon on the taylor gymnasium floor if the fordhamites came down with thoughts of sweet revenge for last year's defeat they retired a sadder and wiser team for lehigh's mar gin was 11 points the final score reading 38 to 27 as a whole the game was rather spotty with frequent flashes of fast passing and perfect shooting inter spersed with many of unsuccessful tries for goals during the first half the fordham team retained the ball the greater part of the time al though this margin was not large this advantage and the general fast style of play was offset by a fre quent calling of fouls on fordham and the fact that practically all of their tries for goal were from a distance the excellent play of hartung blocked practically every chance of the visiting team to fol low through on these long shots and recover for an additional at tempt in the second half in spite of a let-down in the fouls called on fordham they were notable once having assumed the offensive to maintain the standard of play ex hibited in the first period and of fered a rather weak resistance to lehigh's improved passing and shooting continued on page four the score-sheet shows that dur ing the first half eight personal fouls were called on the fordham five for frosh five scares bethlehem prep providing a thrill for a large crowd of spectators the lehigh wrestling team decisively defeated princeton last saturday evening the brown and white matmen proved themselves to be a power ful aggregation and are expected to make a strong bid for the league title in practically every match ft was apparent that the lehigh entry had the advantage and the result of the meet was never in doubt it was the initial meet of the season for lehigh and the victory is particu larly encouraging in that it was won from a league team in the 115-pound class captain schwarzbach got a bar chancery hold while on his feet and forced his opponent to the mat in 1 min ute and 30 seconds warriner in the 125-pound class was up against a hard man but won by decision with an advantage of 30 seconds gihon at 135 pounds had little difficulty in holding his man and won with an advantage of 8 min utes van billiard threw his oppo nent in 4 minutes and 7 seconds in the 158-pound class coxe se cured a head buttock and won by a fall in 4 minutes and 30 seconds burke suffering from an injury was not as aggressive as usual and won by decision levitz was thrown in 7 minutes and 20 seconds by captain wilson the heavyweight put up a good bout but lacked the mat experience of his opponent rifle team swamps lafayette marksmen 1926 wrestlers lose to blair academy west pointers win four of seven events against brown and white tankmen harmon comes to front the army swimmers defeated the brown and white natators in a meet held at west point last sat urday by a score of 39 to 23 al though the first meet of the year for the cadets they showed unusual form and managed to win firsts in many of the events dearmond and breidster were the outstanding stars for west point while harmon and childs did their usual good work for lehigh harmon led by a large margin in the 220 and 50-yard events while childs and astarita in the dives outrated the west pointers the summary — the meet was distinctly encourag ing to the brown and white men in that a satisfactory improvement over previous meets was apparent coach lukens is planning to put his men through some hard prac tices in preparation for the meets to come and will make a strong evening with pro fessor h r bosey reiter as the speaker the topic of the meeting the college man's religion was as appropriately presented as it is timely bosey spoke in part as fol lows : — continued on page four unfortunately the idea of re ligion has been associated with an unfortunate word called theology the history of religion will show that there have been no people with the general wail one hears on every hand is that the college man has no religion there is a haziness in his mind a spirit of unbelief dis interest and opposition at the men tion of the word religion to many minds the college has become a hot bed of atheism the boy from his early life has been taught as a rule to believe one thing and when he reaches college he is taught science which as a rule sets up a state of conflict our religion is not scien tific and our science is not religion as a result a state of apathy and even hostility is evidenced all seniors who have not yet handed in their class ballots are urged to do so in the course of the next few days it is imperative that these ballots accompanied with check be in the hands of j w gar dy 23 not later than the end of this week in addition to the regu lar photograph each man is urged to turn in a snapshot of himself to e h snyder 23 at the phi delta t'heta house at the earliest possi ble date the freshman basketball five met defeat at the hands of the strong bethlehem prep lads last saturday afternoon when the final whistle blew the score stood 43 to 24 with bethlehem prep the victors the playing was extremely fast and at times quite rough the frosh put up a valiant stand against a team very much larger than them selves holding them to a 16 to 15 score at the end of the first half with their opponents leading ep stein and vennel played well for the freshmen while howard the bethlehem forward was easily the star for the opposing quintet scor ing six field goals for his team continued on page four bethlehem prep started the sec ond half with whirlwind playing and the frosh worn out from the fast play were soon left far behind from then until the final whistle junior class to elect historian on friday lehigh's crack marksmen severe ly defeated lafayette last week by the score of 497 to 464 the scores represent about the average scores of the two teams in past matches for the year last season lehigh also beat the lafayette team with a score of 489 to 450 the rifle team is^a recognized minor sport at lafayette as it is at most other colleges that have active teams the following men shot for le high : — stazinski 25 100 hubbard 25 100 e l robinson 24 . . 99 . l a laux 24 99 regad 22 99 total 497 the rifle team also fired a match against georgetown university last week and came out winner by a score of 497 to 494 georgetown always has a crack rifle team that is ranked among the best college teams in the country one of the few matches lehigh lost last year was to georgetown so that the win this year is especially gratifying the men shooting for lehigh in continued on page four athletic committee approves action of lehigh delegates at intercollegiate meeting hard schedule ahead at a meeting of the athletic com mittee last thursday afternoon the action of lehigh s delegates at the recent meeting of the intercollegi ate soccer association was ratified r s mercur 23 captain of last season's team and h t asbury 23 the manager presented lehigh s application for admission to the in tercollegiate league other col leges petitioning were swarthmore and penn state both of whom were turned down lehigh's application on the other hand was unanimously accepted there is but one obstacle before admission is certain and that is the increased appropriation neces sary from all the teams to defray expenses caused by an additional club this matter was brought up by the representatives from har vard and yale and therefore be fore a definite decision can be made the attitude of the different insti tutions relative to the increased ap propriation must be known the financial obligations are so small that the athletic committee expects ! all will report favorably the com mittee voted 1200 to defray the i expenses of the team if the appli cation is granted they also ap ipropriated 200 for the expenses of a second team which will be enter l ed in the pennsylvania state league the intercollegiate soccer league is composed of teams representing harvard yale princeton pennsyl vania cornell and haverford the state league is composed of the second teams of univ of penna and haverford and the varsity teams of swarthmore lafayette and lehigh soccer should enjoy tremendous popularity here next season with two teams in the field the junior class will meet im mediately after the college meet ing on friday morning the elec tion for class historian which was postponed will take place at this time the candidates are e v bennett 24 w c klein 24 e gee 24 and c l rice 24 the class picture will be taken if weather conditions permit every member of 1924 is urged to be present the lehigh freshman wrestling team lost to the blair academy mat men last saturday by the score of
