astin and dr g rowland collins at right bishop condemns conformity hysteria the signing of contracts for five major attractions on the 1953-54 student concerts-lecture series was announced last week additional programs for the university's major series open to the public will be booked for next spring claude raines stage and screen actor who has won major awards for his appearance on broadway and hollywood will will appear in the opening pro gram october 16 ethel waters another screen and stage favor ite will offer a program of songs and sketches from the theatrical productions in which she swing toward coercive stat ism he pointed out five freedoms americans enjoy as 1 a reason able freedom in the choice of goods services and occupations 2 a rea sonable freedom to acquire hold and bequeath property 3 a reason able freedom to earn disposable in comes that will provide a decent amount of true discretionary pur chasing power 4 a reasonable freedom to transform invention and discovery into innovation and to hitch innovation to capital and 5 a reasonable freedom to advance in economic station on independent and honorable terms these are the priceless eco nomic freedoms that must be preserved from the heavy hand of the state if they are to be long enjoyed dr collins con cluded the degrees were conferred upon the seniors and graduate school re cipients of degrees by president martin d whitaker previous to the commencement exercises the uni versity's reserve officer training see collins page 4 a dean from new york univer sity a pioneer in the development of radios and a leading surgeon re ceived honorary degrees at the 85th commencement exercises in grace hall last week recipient of an honorary de gree of doctor of laws was dean g rowland collins of the has served as editor of publica tions for the united states depart ment of agriculture as chairman of the food marketing research council of the port of new york authority and as economic consultant campus were announced last month by elmer w glick treasurer of the university when completed approximately february 1 1954 the new building will be rented to sigma chi fraternity a substantial portion of the funds for the new building has been donated to the university by alumni and friends to provide living accommodations for students on the campus the building was de signed by charles h bauer summit n.j architect who was gradu ated from lehigh in 1930 the first floor of the new unit will house a recreation room storage rooms five study rooms and a sleeping room the second floor will have a modernly equipped kitchen dining room living room nine study rooms and a large sleeping room the building will be of brick construction 100 principals meet here today a meeting of the secondary school principals from eastern pennsylvan ia began this morning at 9 a.m and will continue through tomorrow according to dr harold p thomas director of the summer school the topic of the meetings is arm chair exploration of the universe prof frank e myers of the physics department will speak before the 100 principals tonight the meetings will take place in drown hall rev fuessle succeeds bean as
