nearly 260 undergraduates will receive awards during the annual flag pole day ceremonies tomorrow at 11:40 a.m at least one award will be presented for each sport along with the varsity l cup for the best all around athlete this ceremony during which recognition is given those showing leadership scholarship and sportsmanship is the only event of the entire year when the whole lehigh family is together at one time rep francis e walter of pennsylvania's 20th congressional district is quizzed on the walter-mccarran immigration act by left wil liam latshaw 53 brown and white editorial director elliott bar nett 54 moderator and carl zimmerman 53 b&w editor the broadcast was taped last friday for thursday's press conference of the air to be heard on wlrn at 10 p.m the veteran congressman attended lehigh from 1912 to 1914 undecided as to a memorial for their class the seniors will take a vote at graduation rehearsal on may 21 one suggestion is a traditional class plaque with names of all seniors which would cost about 1500 also under consideration is a smaller plaque without names to occupy the same spot in the chapel as the large one would this would cost about 225 in which case the differ ence would be put toward a scholarship also under consideration are less expensive forms of remembrance with the saving going for some pur pose such as a scholarship sugges tions should be presented to charles hull at un 6-6463 corney shook to take part in comedy at crest phi eta's to initiate 23 thursday deans greet 562 in week new cyanide pres elected ralph hamilton was elected presi dent of cyanide at a meeting thurs day in drown hall other officers se lected to head the junior honorary for the coming year were buell mil ler vice-president phillip weigel secretary and william schubert treasurer the formal initiation and ban quet took place april 28 in lam berton hall president whitaker spoke to the newly initiated members on the university's hundred year plan for the development of the campus others selected for the 15 man so ciety were wayne seltzer eugene brady david sidikman gordon tel fer robert jenkins kenneth faust william goddard robert ring john beister robert barton and norman kaelber in addition recipients of the dean's service award the reiter leadership and idc awards will be announced results of class elections held monday and today will also be an nounced during the ceremonies the program arranged by arca dia will feature the traditional pass ing of the senior cane from the pres ident of the class of 53 nicholas gentile to the new president of the class john arnesen last year's pres ident of arcadia will give a greeting to the new president ralph meerwarth senior class gift will be presented by gentile to president whitaker in the form of a check the university band will provide music so that it will be more convenient for all students to attend classes have been shortened 10 minutes this will allow extra time from 11:40 to 12:30 for the ceremony in the event of rain ceremonies will be held in packard auditorium following is the schedule of classes which will be used on wed nesday by jerry friedenheim one week this spring saw 562 per sons visit the deans office it was not an average week it was a week that brought in many problems that come around this time of year pre-registration brought the men who need or wanted special schedules for the fall semester or who wanted to change curri culums many others came to the deans because of scholastic problems — valentines had come up a couple of weeks before others found their teachers complaining about exces sive absences and still others just had scholastic difficulties this was also the time that stu dents were considering financial aid for the summer and fall these mat ters brought about half of the 562 students teachers and parents to the offices remarkable as it may seem only 12 out of all the visitors to the deans offices were asked to see visitors page 3 twenty-three men of the class of 56 will be initiated into phi eta sig ma freshman honorary at the soci ety's annual initiation and banquet thursday night the banquet will be held at the plaza restaurant this year's pledge class ac cording to president theodore baum 55 numbers one more than last year's to be initiated into phi eta sigma one must have a first semester average of 3.5 or better the frosh include arthur f vein ott jr william e zeiter robert w worley frederick h vonderheiden albert gold thomas jensen mi chael b hresko david k zierdt ronald j murray john e dough erty john p miner frank j macri allan m rathbone edwin l scher ek william a snyder fred p stein kent d hoffman dale f bachman richard m lawrence william e gardella james h le van jr james f riley and sheldon bourchow the phi eta sigma dormitory scholarship cup will be awarded at the banquet to the dorm section which had the highest scholastic av erage for the year 1951-52 collegians at magazine finals the collegians lehigh's dance band has reached the quarter finals in a nationwide recording contest sponsored by metronome jazz magazine under the student direction of fred dunlap 55 and ralph bach 53 and faculty adviser robert boudreau the colleg ians entered the national inter collegiate dance band contest last march they recorded in packer chapel early autumn and disc jockey jump and had wgpa make record see collegians page 4 richard corney 54 and daniel shook 53 are cast as a pair of tax weary athenians in the forthcoming cedar crest college production of aristophanes comedy the birds which will be presented june 2 and 3 in the college outdoor theater at 6:30 p.m a departure from cedar crest's usual greek drama the birds was translated especially for this production from the ori ginal of aristophanes by le high's classics department chair man dr earl s crum the play will be directed by asso prof kate clugston of cedar crest besides the leading parts six other roles will be portrayed by lehigh students john miner 56 and jo seph falzone 54 will play the serv ants and the roles of the four gods will be performed by guy potter 56 gardiner van scoyac 54 clark king 56 and william trumbone 54 the two greeks corney and shook run away from athens to es cape high taxes conspiring with the birds to found a new kingdom in the air they turn the tables by exacting a tribute from both the gods and men by the way of payment the gods are forced to give in marriage a pretty young goddess played by crest's avis lutz of kingston pa by joseph morgenstern time marches backward in the english department the clock on the office wall a perfectly modern and respectable electric clock works like this the hour and minute hands followers that they are keep per fect time but the red second hand floats gracefully down the left side of the face to 6 climbs steadily up from 6 to about 11 then slides slow ly back to 6 it's an amazing thing to see perhaps this second hand is a little hesitant about whirling boldly into the future or per haps it suffers from a slipping gear at its pivot whatever the reason though the english de partment clock seems to care less about time a veteran newspaper man and propaganda specialist in the balkans middle east and western europe has spent years in europe during and after the war on various government mis sions with life photographer leonard mccombe shea was arrested by buenos aires political police in february 1951 in connection with the peaceful attempt by the em ployees of la prensa to return to work shea and mccombe had cov ered the violent events of the day during which one employee was kill ed and 15 wounded english office lingers in past clock hand marches backward ly clockwise witnessing new theor ems replacing old immense testing machines growing before their faces time and motion studies the english department's clock moves more slowly it leaves behind fewer obso lete models leaves them less soiled and hollow progress may not be its credo but its pace has great dignity while the english department like any other group of alert sensible people admires our age's breathless technical progress it also holds firm ly those ageless values and beauties upon which any arts school is built its rather leisurely pace gives it time to cast history's light on our own problems to have fun digesting life's wonderful complexities its treasures are old ones far older even that the departmental furni ture yet still vitally pertinent and enjoyable we mention this as a guide to points of
