three student-directed one-act plays last mustard and cheese pro gram of the season will be present ed at 8 tonight and tomorrow night in packard auditorium first will be sham a satiri cal comedy by frank thomp kins edward rand 54 is the director of this play he was seen in murder in the cathe dral caesar and cleopatra and yellow jack has worked on all mustard and cheese pro ductions for the last three years and has been very active in ra dio drama included in the cast are kenneth verostick 55 first priest in mur der in the cathedral and the senti nel in caesar and cleopatra ar thur anderman 56 david in the rivals francis austin who made her debut in the women's chorus of murder in the cathedral and paul sinner 55 who previously worked on yellow jack second play in the program will be in the zone a suspense drama by eugene o'neill directed by see one-act page 10 wagner to talk on draft rules a meeting to familiarize the stu dents with the rules and regulations of the selective service will be held tuesday may 19 in packard audi torium at 4:10 p.m registrar james h wagner will lead the discussion and will see service page 10 students to vie for wgpa job radio station wgpa-am and fm will award a one-week contract to a student from the radio courses speech 51 and 52 as part of its poli cy to encourage proper training and advancement for aspiring announc ers according to arthur mccracken station manager mccracken will be guest lecturer in the radio courses on may 14th wgpa program director ste fan george will audition the students during their regular class laboratory period in the christmas-saucon hall audition material will include news commercials and disc-jockey copy winner of the auditions will be see wgpa page 3 press lauds n.y concert by robert worley when engineers from a school where music is not even offered as a major field can be invited to car negie hall to sing and make good the unique has been accomplished said a pleased prof george gansz director of the lehigh glee club af ter its carnegie hall debut monday night according to the acting head of the music department lehigh has made great strides in glee club work over the last five years they the glee club have risen from a group of stu dents who met at odd hours to sing for the heck of singing to a group capable of giving full eve ning concerts when questioned on other com parable appearances by the glee club director gancz could recall none the club had sung in new york before he said but always for a lehigh club and hence on a small scale gansz stressed the fact that many college singing groups sing in new york at town hall which can be rented by any group which wishes to perform but that lehigh's glee club is the first ever to be invited to sing in carnegie hall in fact he pointed out only professionals or members of the westminster choir which trains professional musicians have ever before sung in the hall reviews of the concert were good and all echoed the expres sion of the new york world telegram & sun that lehigh's club furnished a magnificent see carnegie page 10 by joseph morgenstern the airborne symphony is a very very ambitious undertaking lehigh's glee club skitch henderson tyrone power and the new york pops or chestra knew it and proved it monday night at carnegie hall marc blitzstein's airpower opus kicked off the first season of the new new york pops orchestra conducted by skitch henderson its challenge was met with varying degrees of success by the elements involved orchestra narrator glee club and soloists together though these units caught fire most often the humor emotion and tight jawed fury of blitzstein's 60-minute work were abundantly evident henderson's opening night pro gram was rather a strange one af ter only 15 minutes of very light music a 15-minute intermission was disturbingly declared then the rest of the evening was devoted to the airborne an odd bedfellow for mor ton gould and leroy anderson in the airborne itself the glee club's enthusiasm virtually carried an orchestra apparently not too familiar with the score the club's precision rendered bliztstein's difficult lyrics sur prisingly understandable too in short george gansz's crew combined with the air force ser geants who should have either worn tuxedos or been segregated in their uniforms had fun with their part see airborne two disciplinary demerits each in action taken tuesday by the disciplinary committee as the result of a panty raid on the graduate nurses dormi tory at st luke's hospital early monday morning robert s gallagher 55 richard e kurtz 54 and william p john son 53 were suspended until february 1954 the brown and white learned from students involved in the raid in addition their credits for the present semester were dropped these three were suspended because they entered the victoria white house the nurses dorm while the three who received demerits robert a sweatman 54 james c white 56 and edward f coffey 56 remained outside the building the sextet was caught 20 minutes after the raid which took place at 1:30 a.m monday each was fined 25 plus costs on a charge of disor derly conduct by justice of the peace carl a fischer of fountain hill after spending the night in jail while one nurse was busy keeping an offender from enter ing her room through a window another was telling one of the students to get out of the build ing at the same time the rooms of two absent nurses were being ransacked the group departed with undergarments and a large panda doll two nurses told hospital and shouting raiders kept their march such a dark see raid page 3 freshmen will not be permitted to have or operate motor vehicles before mid-term reports of the first semester and after that only after meeting five conditions according to a new ruling passed by the faculty on monday the new ruling will go into effect this fall the five pre-requisites recom mended by the educational policy committee and approved by the fa culty are 1 the student receive no fail ing grades at mid-term 2 he be subjected to no disci plinary action of any kind 3 his parents specifically re quest that he be permitted to have a motor vehicle at college 4 the motor vehicle be ade quately covered by liability in surance 5 official permission be re ceived by the student from the dean of students an academic freshman who is placed on scholastic or valentine probation or is the subject of dis ciplinary action will have all motor vehicle privileges withdrawn until he is again in good standing in presenting its report the com mittee stated that permission for students to have or operate motor vehicles while in residence is grant ed as long as there is no evidence see ban page 7 class elections were called
