carl d leary 53 and james f whalen 53 were arrested early last thursday morning by the bethlehem police on a charge of breach of peace according to police leary was noticed apparently trying to take a bethlehem news ageny truck and an officer who happened to be in the building at the time was called and gave chase during the chase the the officer fired over leary's head when he re fused to heed the officer's command to halt leary however was success ful in eluding the officer temporar ily police reported that the officer re turned to the area of the agency and noticed whalen loitering suspi ciously on a nearby corner whalen said that he was waiting for some one and when asked what the indi vidual looked like described leary he also mentioned that they were both in the vicinity a few minutes before about the time the action took place whereupon he was arrested the police picked up leary on campus a short while later brubeck beats crowd sound system renders exciting provocative music tickets are 5 a couple they are now being distributed in all fra ternities and dormitory sections town council is aiding in sales to town men grace hall will be decorated as a show boat the forward deck will be the upper floor where lawrence will play it was explained by the committee that the larger dancing area of the upper floor caused their break with past custom in putting the more danceable lawrence band there the lower floor will be decor ated as the mast area and the wheel house of the show boat guarnieri who specializes more in music just to listen to will play there because of the great er seating facilities provided by the bleachers four members of the dance com mittee will select eight girls to serve as the houseparty queen and her court selection of the queen will be made by the two bandleaders and a chaperone the successaor to janice reed centenary junior college freshman who was the queen last fall is scheduled to be crowned at about midnight the scene of the corona tion will be the lower floor a cup symbolic of her elec tion will be given the queen while members of her court will also receive mementos of the occasion idg is sponsoring its usual after the-dance breakfast at lamberton hall prof e r theis dies leather division head prof edwin r theis research pro fessor and director of the division of leather technology of the institute of research died saturday at st luke's hospital prof theis received his chemical engineering degree from the uni versity of cincinnati in 1921 and his ph.d in 1926 from 1921-27 he was research associate and director of the chemical research department at that school leaving that post to join the staff of lehigh as assistant pro fessor of chemical engineering in 1927 l u senior purchases jezebel she can suitably dubbed the four month old cat jezebel unable readily to obtain the natural diet he feeds the cat horsemeat hank says his nocturnal beast can be handled — if you wear gloves the ocelot itself a tawny yel low cat with black markings comes from south america and by joe morgenstern dave brubeck had a lot to fight friday night at grace hall but he most certainly won his first skirmish was with a totally mute 5600 public ad dress system erie echoes skip ping around grace ball the metallic tatoo of feet on steel grandstands an utterly inexcus able interruption by our audio visual technician to bark a bel ligerent no smoking announce ment all of these tried desper ately to eclipse mr brubeck's music but there was just too much music to eclipse a crowd of over 500 greeted the group and what a crowd it was their caterwauling go-go-go ing would have done justice to a roman gladiator or the brooklyn dodgers but hardly to the thoughtful tapes tries of the brubeck quartet we're unceasingy amazed by this group dave's rich block chords his unflaggingly fertile mind that revi talizes the most tired ballad paul desmond's alto which never suffers by comparison desmond's tech nique conception and feeling are a remarkable parlay and far more re markabe is the telepathic interplay the counterpoint between alto and piano this counterpoint of course must be heard and not written about its proximity to bach is almost too obvious to mention and the facility with which it's handled by the brubeck group is equally obvious in the listen ing as always dave's choice of tunes was admirable to soothe the savage beasts he martialed the light artil lery of lloyd davis fine bongos on body and soul the thrilling inex horable progression of brubeck chords gave the way you look to night an inner light all the other rhythm tunes take the a train me and my shadow let's fall in love sombedoy loves me and this oan't be love delighted the audience and rightfully so for us though the high points of the evening were stardust and alice in wonderland to say that dave and paul desmond build on the first ballad is an understatement with a first recognizable chorus as a springboard the group conjures up its own lovely melodies above and beyond the call of hoagy car michael in alice dave's bell-like chords establish a mood of restraint and delicacy which is never broken by desmond's alto musings understatement and restraint perhaps are the keynote to the group's appeal whether it be understatement in dave's melod ic background for a desmond solo or restraint in the swinging second chorus of let's fall in love this quartet leaves the lis tener hungry for more mr bru beck and his friends played a lot of music friday night but they implied that there was a lot more has purchased a 1939 willys overland four-door sedan to give away as a door priae at the houseparty dance friday night everything works according to jay greenstone 54 member of the dance committee the gray sedan which will be painted brown and white has passed its 1953 inspection it has an excellent four-cylinder mo tor and fair tires the dreamboat may be seen around campus during the week and will be on display on the upper floor of grace hall during the dance elliot lawrence and johnny guarnieri wil provide the music for the dance which will be held between 10 p.m and 2 a.m here's the thurs day and friday may 7 and 8 one referendum will decide whether or not lehigh will con tinue its affiliation with the na tional student association the other referendum will if passed move the arcadia elections to five weeks after the beginning of the spring semester rather than four weeks as it is now a total of 59 petitions were sub mitted for offices by members of all three classes candidates for sophomore class offices are the most numerous there being 36 petitions submitted only 10 petitions were submitted for junior class offices and 12 petitions were received from senior candidates candidates for the various class offices are as follows class of 54 see petitions page 1 although still on social probation tau deta phi's petition for a house party was granted by associate dean byron c hayes last week i am granting the petition because i sincerely believe that the president and officials of tau delta phi have shown that they are ready to assume re sponsibility to hold as nice a houseparty weekend as any house on campus dean hayes stated the house was placed on proba tion at the beginning of the spring semester for actions last semester which the dean felt showed in effectiveness inability and irrespon sibility on the part of members of the fraternity radio workshop to offer macbeth thursday evening macbeth radio workshop's big gest production of the year will be aired over wgpa-fm thursday evening at 8 several weeks in pro duction it was especially program med for william shakespeare's birthday this week heading the cast as macbeth will be robert kuehner 54 lady macbeth will be portrayed by miss helen search of mora vian college for women an drew jeffrey 55 will play mac duff and howard hougland 56 will play malcolm robert morgan 55 will play the doctor while john archibald 54 will take the part of banquo miss joyce weller of wgpa will portray the nurse the show will be narrated by paul sichert 55 with techni cians william millett 56 and paul miller 54 in charge of sound originating from the radio work shop studios in christmas-saucon hall the show will be directed and produced by lloyd kaiser the final workshop dramatic of fering of the year macbeth will be not only the biggest but the most complex according to kaiser lu squirt artist is fined 13 for aqua - pistoling cop boys will be boys for instance take john hackeling 54 john squirted a bethlehem cop with a water pistol it was all in fun after all it's spring but the cop's sense of humor wasn't impressed maybe it was be cause the shock nearly knocked him off his motorcycle anyway he gave chase result of the evening's sport was a fine of 13.50 for prankster hackel ing later in the evening a squad car passed the lehigh student and an officer greeted him with the immortal words where's your water pistol sonny last seen hackeling was picking salt out of his wounds 2 lu students are arrested for breach of peace
