tuesday march 24 1953 brown and white vol 64 no 38 bethlehem pa humor mag views polled by arcadia fraternities end festivities with gamblin spree sparkling bob acres with cloak puts on a display of antics during the m&c presentation of the rivals friday evening in broughal high school auditorium 3 houses lose 250 to robbers epitaphs acres spark m & c's farce - comedy by joe morgenstern exchange dinners a pledge ban quet a dixie concert the rivals and the monte carlo dance combin ed to make this year's greek week end a busy one festivities started with the pledge banquet in the hotel bethlehem and fraternity ex change dinners special dinner meetings for presidents treasur ers and stewards were held at which fraternity problems were discussed dixieland highlighted saturday afternoon's activities at the maen nerchor where buddy williams and several members of his band played the rivals given at broughal high school saturday evening pro vided an hour and a half of relaxa tion between the dixieland and the monte carlo later that night rounding olf the weekend was the if dance on the upper floor of grace hall with music again by buddy williams although money was flowing furiously across gambling tables at the monte carlo on the floor below no report of who won ihe most money was made a poll of campus opinion regarding the proposed lehigh humor maga zine is now in progress according to arcadian jack fox 54 petitions in support of such a publication are being circulated among all living groups to be signed by persons who are strongly in favor of creating a humor magazine . . . and who would support it by subscription fox who along with arcadia president ralph meerwarth 54 had ad vocated during the election cam paign that a magazine be establish ed stressed the need for large-scale student backing the opinion sheets he feels will give concrete evidence of campus-wide desire for the ma gazine with 50 per cent of the student body as subscribers the humor ma gazine could not fail fox declared the sheets provide space for informal application for staff po sitions on the publication in ad dition to space for the names of supporters of the humor maga zine movement under the arcadia's publications committee's rules a definite organi zation must be set up for any pro posed publication before its estab lishment may be considered in or der that such an organization may be created fox explained prospec tive staff members are urged to sign both parts of the circulating sheets according to fox the magazine would be a creative outlet and would be published five times dur ing the year at a cost of less than 1.50 a subscription judging from friday night's audience at the rivals lehigh is far more partial to billy sheridan than to richard brinsley sheridan for the crowd was a poor one broughal high school's auditorium bespoke a popu lation shift — away from bethlehem ifc's round of exchange fraternity dinners and the pledge banquet doubtless cut into attendance at mustard and cheese's production which is unfortunate because those who missed the rivals and there were many missed a very pleasant evening mustard and cheese played to a small painfully docile audience it was admirably attentive and quiet but constantly so much of sheri dan's wit apparently eluded the au dience but usually through no fault of the cast in fact the audience's unwonted reserve might in part account for the fact that too often the cast pushed and forced the dia logue instead of letting it sparkle on its own merits see acres page 6 idc will choose queen for drag an added attraction at the spring dorm drag to be held april 11 with music by the collegians will be the crowning of queen of the dance men who want to enter their dates in the contest will receive awards festival's stage highlights motif of earth space student construction crews started setting up the prefabricated stage for the music festival in grace hall this week stage sections already constructed in the festival work room beneath the south stands are being assembled to form the mod ernistic setting for the all-student production on april 17 and 18 plans call for the stage to be completed by spring vacation and students interested in work ing en construction can sign up for jobs with henry franz iv 54 personnel manager un 7-7116 the stage will be 100 feet wide and 33 taylor dormitory and lead to drinker and dravo but he thought nothing of the incident at the time at sigma nu 110 was taken under similar circumstances from the pants pockets of sleep ing brothers early saturday morning the time of the rob bery has been fixed at sometime between 3:30 and 6:30 a.m theta delta chi the third house robbed reported 63 missing from wallets left in trousers and estimat ed that the theft must also have oc cured early saturday morning or late friday night university police were unavail able for comment by murry jennings ihe third annual conference on religion is over with its passing has come the controversy as to the value of a religious conference at lehigh attendance at this year's scheduled meetings was less than last year for a total of 16 student meetings other than the personal con sultations and living-group dis cussions 352 attended — an av erage of 22 a meeting dr a roy eckardt head of the department of religion admitted that poor attendance at the religi ous conference cannot be denied however we've got a long way to go on this thing according to the student leaders of the conference there are many angles to consider when looking at the attendance figures fred oelschlager 54 chair man of christian council be lieves that attendance msghtm s ght have been affected by quizzes given during the conference in spite of requests to professors from christian council to hold off on quizzes if possible lack of a chaplain to help coordi nate the conference according to oelgeschlager was a decided disad vantage alvord fund presi dent whitaker announced today lehigh is one of 24 colleges and universities selected to ini tiate this new industry-sponsor ed educational program which will cover about 400 scholar ships and cost an estimated 500,000 a year four students will be selected ann ually at lehigh four from this year's freshman class four from next september's class and so on the selection of recipients will be made by the committee on scholar ships and loans the applications for the new scholarships to be processed by the office of admissions subject to lehigh's requirements for admis sions and the regulations of the awarding group for the duration of the schol arship the student will be re quired to live up to the academic and conduct requirements of le high the scholarships cover the com plete cost of tuition for a four-year course and provide reasonable al lowances for the necessary books and required fees union carbide scholarship stu dents will be encouraged to gain the experience of industrial employ men i during the summer and union car bide's plants laboratories and offi ces will be available but the experi ence may be gained in any indus trial organization after graduation the scholarship student may find opportunities in many of the divisions of union car bide but there is no obligation on the part of either the student or the corporation with respect to his em ployment radio workshop to air morgan's drama thursday an original radio drama and ori ginal background music add up to the most creative radio workshop venture of the year at 8 p.m thurs day on wgpa-fm according to di rector lloyd kaiser nice kid by robert mor gan 55 is the original drama telling of a mother who is torn between her sheriff husband and her bandit son the script was written this semester in con nection with speech 51 — basic radio course background music has been com posed for the drama by robert bou dreau of the music department nice kid stars ronald van horn 53 raymond bergstressler 54 thomas taylor 56 and millie war ner moravian college for women it will be one part of a dual-drama program guy de maupassant's a piece of string will be the work shops second offering it tells how a piece of string leads to suspicion of theft special music has also been ar ranged for this drama by boudreau the cast features edward rand 54 reynold werkheiser 55 gilbert moskowitz 56 arthur anderman 56 and paul sichert 54 sound technicians for both shows are gilbert millett 56 george koelsch 56 and paul miller 54 announcer is walter briggs 56 kaiser is director and producer both
