average or face social probation until the aver age can be obtained will be recom mended to the faculty according to a letter from associate dean of stu dents byron c hayes received by all fraternity presidents saturday hayes said in the letter that in attempting to account for the miserable scholarship being exhibited by a large number of fraternity men he had made a study for the first three weeks of this semester and found in a high percentage of cases involv ing on-and-off probation men and men with 3.0 capabilities who are making less than a 2.0 record an excess of cutting and many questionable excused ab sences he deemed the letter to serve a three-fold purpose first to ask fra ternity officials to take positive ac tion to reduce absenteeism second to ask fraternity officials to exercise their power to produce maximum scholastic result from each indivi dual fraternity member third to warn living group heads that while individual action will continue to be taken by the dean's office studies are underway which may result in actions impinging upon any fraternity whose scholar ship down to the last man is not respectable or creditable in a seven point warning hayes went on to say that while attendance in class will not in sure that a student will make the record of which he is cap able it is considered the prim ary indication that he is trying to keep faith with those who in most cases have made sacrifices to send him to college he added that regular attendance at all classes is expected and that re quests for excuses for reasons other than illness or death
