gottling meerwarth gasswint gilmore barnett butler glee club will perform in carnegie hall with philharmonic ty power to narrate the big three referendum pro posal was defeated last night by 137 votes a two-thirds majority of the 1517 votes cast in the election was needed for victory a simple majority of 875 was achieved but it was not enough the measure would have been a constitutional amendment to permit the granting of seats at the table at arcadia meetings and full speaking privileges to the presidents of ifc idc and town council arcadia decided that the proposal would require a constitutional amendment at a recent meeting the decision meant that a two-thirds ma jority in the referendum would be needed the alternative a change in the arcadia by-laws would have needed only a simple majority arcadia president john arne sen told the brown and white that the two-thirds requirement was wise because the plan was a serious issue and if the stu dents wanted it they would have gotten a two-thirds majority he said that membership is de fined in the constitution and that the big three plan should be defined there also idc president sam johnson dis agreed with arnesen he told the brown and white arcadia stacked the cards the plan could have been a by-law arcadia went overboard it wasn't that big however johnson said he hadn't been so strong for the big three plan since arcadia voted its unani mous opposition to it i'm not one to jam something down somebody's throat he explained but the arca dia vote came too late to take the question off the ballot lehigh's glee club will be carne gie-hall-bound for the first time in its history monday may 4 announc ed george gansz director of the music department arrangements have been made for the club to sing in the fa mous concert hall with the new york philharmonic orchestra under the direction of skitch henderson tyrone power will narrate the program which will consist of the lehigh glee club and the singing sergeants of the air force perform ing marc blitzstein's airbourne symphony this program is the first of a ser ies of 10 pop concerts to be held prior to the regular summer series of the new york philharmonic or chestra in carnegie hall largest mu sic hall in the united states the glee club will sing in the sec ond half of the program the first half of which will consist of popular music the concert will begin at 8 p.m faye emerson who has a fi see glee club page 4 e power biggs to give recital in chapel sun e power biggs cbs concert or ganist will broadcast his network radio show 9:30 sunday morning from packer memorial chapel in the chapel at 4 p.m biggs will give a recital on the star key memorial organ all le high students and their friends are invited to the recital the earlier radio program will not be open to an audience water music suite and a mozart composition make up the radio show the suite was written by an early moravian composer and was played in church ceremonies which took place on the lehigh river dur ing the latter part of the 18th cen tury a number composed by george gansz university organist will also be played reporter roughs it in pup tent in name of sordid authenticity big 3 seating brings plethora of propaganda rumors that arcadia and idc fi nanced the posters and leaflets on campus this week which urged stu dents to vote yes or no on the big three referendum question were squelched today idc president sam johnson chief proponent of the seating plan told idc since the origi nal ordering of these posters was unauthorized by idc i am willing to pay for them person ally johnson arranged the printing during vacation without first con sulting idc since the posters were not intended to be a project of that group a citizens committee organized to counterbalance the propaganda in favor of the proposal attacked the bill with leaflets and brown and white advertising a member of the committee described it as composed of campus leaders who feel obli gated to defeat the measure since its passage would break down the meaning of arcadia which was originally set up to represent all lehigh and not specific living groups arcadia president john arnesen inserted an ad in the brown and white which urged readers to vote against the proposal he was not acting in behalf of arcadia by gail monroe somewhere in front of li brary feb 25 lup this is the army the men at the pentagon or may be it was grace hall decided that a 24-hour bivouac in front of the li brary would serve to inform the public of the fact that the military ball will be held 55 captured 95 first-place votes — the exact electoral quota — to become the first elected member of the new student government miller feels the student body ex pressed a desire for greater unity in arcadia when it gave him the top vote instead of 15 individuals i'd like to see arcadia a unified work ing body he told the brown and white after the returns came in last night i am both pleased and surprised miller added breathing a sigh of re lief that it was all over six other candidates received the electoral quota they are thomas nitsche 54 second bal lot malvern gross 54 fourth ballot ralph meerwarth 54 sixth ballot edward dussinger 54 and donald luce jr 54 tenth ballot and ralph hamil ton 55 twelfth ballot gross and dussinger were the only candi dates for re-election elimination of the lowest candi dates accounted for the election of the remaining eight students to the 15 man governing body the elec tion was over on the 13th ballot candidates elected in this manner were william burgin 56 90 votes norman gasswint 56 89 votes james gottling 54 88 votes wallace butler 54 87 votes elliot barnett 54 84 votes robert gilmore 55 83 votes jack fox 54 78 votes and francis flynn 55 74 votes fraternities took the election by storm acquiring 10 representatives four of the arcadians-elect are dorm men while the town group managed to obtain only one spokes man issue-wise the new arcadia voted against the referendum — see story col 5 — 10 to 5 seven members favor continuing membership in nsa while five are opposed both candidates who campaigned for a campus humor magazine were elect ed other platforms of the elect ees call for keeping drown hall tv set on after 10 p.m and shortening registration by filling in cards at home voting fell off only slightly com pared to last year sixty-one per cent of the eligible students partici pated as compared to 63 per-cent in the last arcadia election a total of 1517 votes were recorded although the turnout was nor mal there were more exhaust ed ballots in this election than in quite a few years according to michael p arra 53 head of the four-man elections com mittee gleeful handshakes silent depart tures and calculated speculation greeted tabulations as they were chalked on a large blackboard in drown hall lounge where many of the candidates gathered to hear the first results 100 seniors owe dough more than 100 seniors have failed to pay their class assessments ac cording to peter huester class treasurer the assessment pays for a copy of the 1953 epitome a ticket to the graduation ball the class picnic in june and entitles the senior to have his name engraved on a plaque which is placed in packer chapel in addition to these personal bene fits the senior is also contributing toward the purchase of a class gift huester urges all members of the class to pitch in and attain the 100 per cent goal fraternities will be canvassed by clarence wingert and assistants dorms by william roxby and as sistants
