lehigh university bethlehem pa tuesday february 24 1953 lehigh university brown and white platforms split on big 3 11 candidates pro 15 con top secret mil bivouac to aid ball apparently confounded by the bigger decisions in life rushee art geiger puzzles over fraternity bids in the arcadia office friday after noon who got him we did cries sigma nu see story column 1 the referendum issue of whether the heads of the three living groups should be granted seats at the arcadia table and the same speaking pri vileges as members has the arcadia candidates badly split brown and white found when it interviewed the candidates on their platforms eleven candidates were in favor of the proposal 15 against one robert gilmore favored giving the presidents voting powers as well those who favored the plan gen erally felt that the presidents de served the privileges because they represent the students and that ar cadia would benefit from their ex perience with and information on questions related to their particular living groups supporters of the plan were wer ner seel william burgin ira rosen berg gilmore richard glassberg donald smith buell miller nor man gasswint donald luce gayle williams and donald concilio opponents felt that the propo sal would serve no useful pur pose and might divide arcadia on living group lines they sug gested that arcadia invite the presidents to attend meetings at which matters related to their respective groups woud be dis cussed • the opponents were henry fran zoni thomas nitsche francis sha menek james kelly francis flynn see analysis page 3 bloodmobiles to welcome walk-in donors walk-in blood donors will be ac commodated by the two bloodmobile units at grace hall thursday and friday according to dr charles sei dle chairman of the drive students under 21 must have a permission card signed by their parents however these cards are still available in the admission's office donors under 21 must present this card at the time of donation total pledges have now reached 819 with the dormitories still out in front recent fraternity pledges have now put them just a few short of the dorms the red cross urges that donors do not eat rich or fatty foods within four hours of appointment time or else blood cannot be processed those who because of illness or other reasons cannot keep their appointments are asked to notify the red cross appointments on thursday are scheduled from 11:30 a.m to 5 p.m and on friday from 10 a.m to 3:30 p.m ostrander leaves lu faces court charges edgar a ostrander was ordered held for criminal court on charges of drunken driving and hit and run at a hearing in sellersville friday afternoon ostrander who has withdrawn from lehigh also was ordered held for the april term of conrt in bethlehem on a charge of stealing a taxi cab police head quarters said saturday ostrander's bail of 1,000 on the larceny charge was continued he is also free on 500 bail on each of the charges brought by the state police as a result of a shot-punctuated chase early wednesday morning an air of military secrecy has fall en over plans for the full military bivouac to be staged in front of the university library tonight in con nection with promotion of the mil ball to be held saturday evening in grace hall the publicity committee of the affair had previously obtained six volunteers to serve as ticket sellers on 24-hour duty equip ped with full military regalia including pup tents and sleeping bags according to robert sigethey di rector of publicity lehigh will soon know what military life is like and we hope it will remind them to come to the ball saturday too the military theme will continue to predominate at dance which will follow the lehigh-navy wres tling meet during the intermission break a drill team composed of mem bers of pershing rifles and the air force drill team will combine in different formations varying from square dancing to close or der quadrilles matt gillespie will provide music for the dance from 10 to 1 a.m all national honor society members will wear their uniforms and all other military science students are invited to shine their brass and join the gang uniforms however are not required this is the first year that the three honor groups have combined to sponsor the annual dance formerly scabbard and blade undertook the task alone lu forensic entries miss meet honors lehigh's entries didn't fare well in the sixth annual pennsylvania in tercollegiate forensic tournament held here last thursday friday and saturday competing in only one event the debate contest delta omi cron theta members compiled a 6 and 4 record to place sixth in that event lehigh did not have a contestant in the oratory divi sion and their entry richard shaffer 55 in the extempore speech contest could not com pete because of illness pittsburgh university emerged as the new holder of the talon debate trophy given to the team winner winner last year was pennsylvania awards of gold silver and bronze keys were made to the individual winners who will represent the state in the inter-state oratorical contest chest misses goal by 110 last fall's campus chest fell just 110.74 short of its 5,000 goal ac cording to a report given to arcadia last week by the drive's chairmen warren stevens 53 and mark kaufmann 53 over-all aims accomplish ments and failures of this year's campus chest drive were cov ered in the report major difficulties encountered were getting complete town solicita tion and failing to collect 100 per cent of the pledges on the publicity side success was achieved through early and thor ough preparation it is felt by kauf mann and stevens that adequate amounts and types of publicity were used the report stressed that in all living groups the most influen tial personnel were the best so licitors these men should be the representatives since section and fraternity presidents do not have the time necessary to de vote to solicitation a treasurer's report was given at the end of the report noting that pledges amounted to 29 per cent of the total income a total of 605 bids were given out by 30 fraternities to freshmen and several sophomores friday after noon only 324 were accepted following is a list of the men pledging the respective fraterni ties as of sunday afteroon un less otherwise designated the men are freshmen alpha
