for the second straight year lehigh has been selected as host for the top state forensic event of the year through the division of speech and delta omicron theta honorary debate society lehigh will play host to he sixth annual pennsylvania intercollegiate forensic tournament thursday friday and saturday the debating association of pennsylvania colleges the sponsor of the event is composed of 47 pennsylvania colleges and universities 30 to 35 of which will send rep resentatives to participate in the meet competition will be held in the extempore speech contests oratory contests and debate the extempore speech and oratory contests are di vided into men's and women's divi sion delta omicron theta will send four varsity debaters into the ver bal foray to represent lehigh the tcpic for discussion will be re solved that the congress of the united states should enact a com pulsory fair employment practices act upholding the affirmative side of the question will be richard davis 53 and george hopkins 54 while the negative team will be composed of elliott barnett 54 and james hill 54 captured by the university of pennsylvania last year the talon debate trophy will be awarded to the winning collegiate debate team this trophy rotates with permanent possession to be granted to the first college to win it three times medals will be awarded to the individual winners in the speaking contests swarthmore college won the tro phy in 1948 university of pitts burgh men in 1949 allegheny college in 1950 and pennsylvania state college's men's team in 1951 delegates will be guests of the le high student-concerts-lectures ser ies committee at its concert friday night by the little orchestra of new york bids distributed 1-5 p.m friday fraternity bids may be picked up in drown hall between 1 and 5 p.m friday they will be given out by a disinterested party at the right-hand doorway in the arcadia office the bid distribution point may be reached by walking thru the arcadia meeting room at the west end of the main lounge and circling left into the arca dia office directional signs will be posted by fraternities accord ing to herbert roemmele 53 ifc vice-president students must present their id cards in order to receive their bids after a bid has been selected the rest should be returned strict si lence is to be observed while bids are given out a student should report to the fraternity whose bid he has select ed at 6 p.m no rushing or contacting is to be permitted from thursday feb 19 at 8 p.m to friday at 6 p.m students who are on valentine disciplinary or scholastic probation may not be pledged twenty-eight men are running for 15 positions in arcadia elections will take place feb 25 and 26 nominating petitions were ac cepted until thursday an exten sion of one day past the official wednesday deadline arcadia elections committee chairman michael arra 53 explained that since posters cited thurs day as the deadline by mistake petitions were accepted on that day only two arcadians are running for re-election they are malvern gross 54 and edward dussinger 54 nine others are graduating and four have decided not to try for re election sixteen juniors nine two summers for con ducting the vienna symphony or chestra in austria the orchestre de la suisse romande in switzerland and the opera nacional in mexico city a graduate of columbia uni versity he studied at the man nes school of music in new york he studied piano under the guidance of frank sheridan and isabel vengerova compo sition with hans weisse and conducting with carl bambur ger and otto klemperer from its first season of 16 concerts in 1947 in new york the orchestra increased its schedule to more than 50 concerts last winter with a bril liant post season of performances of opera in concert form which enlist ed the talents of an array of artists from the metropolitan opera john beggs dance specialist engaged for music festival essie fisher slips on ice injures hip slipping on the icy steps as she approached drinker house on her way to work mrs ester essie fisher 71 a university employee for over 43 years fell and severely in jured her hip last thursday morn ing unable to attract aid mrs fisher lay on the ice for several minutes before lavina taylor cook at delta tau delta chanced to see her as she glanced out of the window members of the fraternity and of drinker 36 where mrs fisher is maid car ried her to the fraternity and tried to get a taxi for two hours cab companies al though contacted repeatedly failed to answer the summons and the see essie page 5 the third off-campus car accident of the semester involving lehigh stu dents occurred sunday afternoon at the intersection of easton aye and hickory st in bethlehem no one was injured karl a gabler 55 was driving behind a car operated by lucille e gross 212 main st freemansburg and owned by maynard h gross of the same address according to officers edward morris and stanley schiffert of the beth lehem police who investigated the accident the mishap occurred when miss gross pulled toward the center of the highway apparently about to make a left hand turn gabler started to cut around her right side when she pulled back into traffic the left front of gabler's car and the right rear of miss gross car were damaged the damage to gabler's car was estimated at between 75 and 100 four lehigh cars were involved in a freak four-car chain accident last week on packer aye fred s davis incured serious damage to his 1940 mercury convert ible when he drove it into the left rear end of raymond brandes 54 parked 1937 plymouth which in turn plunged into harry schaffer's parked 1950 mercury and the park ed 1934 ford of herman joerger 54 both the front and rear ends of brandes car were seriously damag ed presented with an add ed group ensemble the second part will include the ballet of the flying saucers this will be a modern style number not actually a ballet both men and women will participate in
