bethlehem pa testing lob center to cost 1 million tuesday december 16 1952 plans for the building to house the world's largest vertical univer sal testing machine at lehigh uni versity were announced thursday by dr martin d whitaker at a tech nical meeting of the iron and steel the architect's sketch for the new structure to adjoin fritz lab is shown above the new laboratory center will house the world's largest vertical universal testing machine five auxiliary labs a library con ference room two seminar rooms an elevator and 21 offices dean issues keys warning the committee on discipline will deal summarily and drastically with any student found illegally possessing on his person or in his lodging master keys to university buildings or property at any time after the holidays stated dean wray congdon in a letter to the brown and white the same applies to the making of such keys all university students who possess any keys to university build ings or property other than those keys issued to them by buildings and grounds are herewith directed to turn all such keys in at the arca dia office with no questions being asked arcadia will turn those keys in anonymously to the dean of stu dents congdon said illegal making and possession of duplicate master keys to university buildings has caused two students to be suspended recently from the university voluntarily other students have turned in 48 duplicate and master keys and several blanks but it is believed that there are still more of these " keys illegally possessed by students protection and security of property both student possessions and university property are jeopar dized when such keys are possessed by students stated congdon furthermore he added possession of duplicate or master keys to the building where property has been lost is prima facie evidence of guilt and can put the possessor in an em barrassing and dangerous position institute at the hotel warwick philadelphia total cost of new equipment and building expected to be ready for the opening of the academic year starting september 1954 is estimat ed at 1,200,000 the seven-story brick building will be 130 feet long and 70 feet wide and will be located south of fritz laboratory an 18-foot pit 20 feet by 30 feet will be located in the middle area under the laboratory a four-foot reinforced concrete slab will extend over most of the floor area to sup port long girders in addition to housing the 5,000,000 lb capacity hydraulic tension compression machine to be con structed at an estimated cost of 400,000 the building will house five laboratories a library conference room two seminar rooms an eleva tor and 21 offices the laboratories to be provided by the new facilities will be for photoelastic metallographic models instruments and electronics work a feature of the building plans calls for entrances at the second floor level at the south and the main floor level at the west the arrange ment will be such that students on entering the laboratory center with out interfering with a test setup will find it convenient to witness large scale tests the main entrance at the west will have an 18 feet by 20 feet roll ing door for delivery of large gird ers above this will be a solex glass window measuring 32 feet by 40 feet selection of the site for the new structure was made on the ba sis that this location will provide good coordination of old and new facilities ease of delivery of heavy materials to be tested minimum in terference with present campus buildings and best appearance the 70-foot width will feature a bay of 50 feet to be served by a 20 ton crane the new testing machine see machine page 3 the 5,000,000 lb capacity hydrau lic tension-compression machine will pormit testing of building col umns and compressed members of railroad and building trusses campus chest hits 4,894 all-time high for the first time since its incep tion the lehigh campus chest drive looked as though it was well on the way to going over the goal of 5,000 final figures compiled sunday show that the total would have been 5,006.31 if all the promised pledges had been paid as it now stands the final amount is 4,894.06 with the balance 112.25 in pledges unpaid of the outstanding pledges due fraternities fell short in fulfilling their pledges by 54.75 dormitories reneged on 49.50 and the town group left 8.00 unpaid the pledges on the books range in size from one dollar to 14 dollars living groups which attained 100 per cent contribution of three dollars per man will receive a certificate of achievement from the campus chest committee headed by mark kaufmann and warren stevens both senior classmen final figures tabulated by trea surer mark given 53 show eight fraternity groups among those who hit the high mark alpha tau ome ga delta chi delta phi kappa al pha phi gamma delta pi lambda phi psi upsilon and sigma phi dormitory groups which attained 100 per cent or more were dravo c2 drinker 2b leonard provide awards a scholarship fund of 25,000 has been established at lehigh universi ty by the rust engineering company of pittsburgh according to an an nouncement friday by elmer w glick university treasurer the in come from this fund is to be used for one or more students in engi neering winners of scholarship awards under this fund are to be chosen by the university committee on schol arship grants on the basis of finan cial need character and well-adjust ed personality intelligence and above average potential epitome late if copy is the 53 epitome will probably be late if living groups phasized whether or not the book will be late depends on this week groups have had all semester to submit copy and if they let us down it's only fair to the epitome staff that the delinquents take the
