corneu bandsmen plan big concert tonight the 1922 football season has come to a true close now that the letters have been awarded and a captain elected for next year the man who was recently elected to fill this position was none other than the scrappy center william springsteen 24 bill hails from detroit michi gan and entered lehigh in the fall of 1920 after having played three years of football for the north western high school of detroit in his freshman year bill or wee willie as he is sometimes called managed to make a berth on the varsity eleven holding down a tackle position at this post bill soon snowed the lehigh fans just what a scrappy lineman he was and his brilliant playing in the lehigh perm state game that year won for him the name of a deadly tackier and a tough man to overcome the next year he was moved to the center post and it had to be a mighty strong team to buck center with success then came the time for the gone but-not-forgotten season which has just closed little bill was seen again im the line-up this time hold ing down the wing position for the first few games of the season at this post he showed his oldi-time fight and fast playing but just about this time bill's old trouble with his knee returned and he was forced to the side lines for a short time then as the lafayette game ap proached it was seen that the serv ices of bill were needed more than ever to fight for the brown and white team when they lined up against the maroon at easton he was sent out to the famous bone setter reese who fixed his knee up in fine shape when bill returned it was with the hope of getting a crack at the eastonians and anybody who remembers the fighting spirit shown in that game not alone by bill springsteen but by the whole team will never forget the hard fight and determined opposition that our brown and white team gave the famed team of lafayette notice the band has spent much time preparing for their concert at the state hospital at rittersville at 7:30 o'clock to-night the concert will be held under the auspices of the ladies auxiliary of the amer ican legion as they have charge of the amusement at the hospital the program will contain mostly classical music but however there will be a few numbers of popular music also no definite schedule has been made up for the band as yet but it is expected that there will be a few engagements at the kurtz and grand theaters to-morrow the brown andi white soccer team journeys down the riv er to meet the strong lafayette team at march field this is the last and most important game of the season as it decides who shall be the champion of the pennsyl vania state league lafayette swarthmore and lehigh were the three tied for the title but the de feat of swarthmore by lafayette leaves only the maroon and the brown and white as the two con tenders for the championship as far as points are concerned swarthmore is tied with the teams of the lehigh valley but the qua kers have finished their season so that the winner of to-morrow will lead the league in the matter of counters between the lehigh and lafayette trains there is little to choose as far as league games are concerned both of them defeated haverford while lehigh also de feated perm which in turn downed the maroon on the other hand lafayette conquered swarthmore champions for the last three years while lehigh succumbed to defeat before them lafayette started the season so late that she has not play ed many contests outside the league therefore no comparison on this ba sis can be made lehigh on the with the hokendauqua field lafayette defeated swarthmore last saturday to the tune of 2 to 0 in spite of the field being covered with mud ice and snow the game was hard-fought and brilliantly played lafayette was on the offensive throughout nearly the entire game and kept the ball in swarthmore's territory most of the time mccall lafayette's speedy center forward was the man who scored both of the maroon's goals he played a strong game and is one of lafayette's mainstays the de fensive work of johnston orr and lee of lafayette was very good and spoiled what chances swarth more had to score notice moravian college was handed a jolt on wednesday night by the brown and white quintet in a one sided game 50 to 18 the lehigh team although a vet eran one presented an altogether different style of attack from that shown last year and had the mora vian team at their mercy through out the entire forty minutes of play the superior coaching of jim baldwin was evident from the op ening whistle lehigh scored first blood when lingle dropped a foul goal through the net the lehigh team began a defensive game but after five min utes of play lees came through with the first field goal and there after the brown and white rained in field goals galore the first half ended with lehigh well in the front 31 to 7 the moravian team could locate the basket but two times dur ing the first half
