Joe Ryan The 1999 Lehigh softball team will forever be re membered for its inconsistency. These Mountain Hawks could change about as quickly as the position of the sun in the sky. And so it was last Saturday during the Patriot League Tournament that Lehigh shined brightly at midday, but had their title hopes vanish with the bright orange sphere at dusk. For the first time since 1991, the Mountain Hawks weren't around on the final day of the Patriot tournament as they followed an early 2-0 win over Holy Cross with dismal back-to-back losses that had them watching Holy Cross and Colgate battle for the league championship. The title matchup offerered a battle between the Patriot League's two premier pitchers in Holy Cross's Genoa Grosch and Colgate's Tara McGoff. But no pitcher looked as good as Lehigh's Joelle Dawson in Lehigh's first game against Holy Cross. The senior outdueled Grosch with a six-hitter, striking out four and walking none. The Mountain Hawks got the only run they would need in the first inning when Allen graduate Tara Stine led off by beating out an infield single. She stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Jessica Roche's double. Lehigh tacked on another run in the fifth when Stine again got things started with a single and stolen base. This time she scored on a hit by Lindsay Massucci. That was more than enough for Dawson, who improved to 8-11 on the season. "It's intimidating when you're going against the Pitcher of the Year (Grosch), but I took it as a challenge," Dawson said. "It wasn't like she didn't deserve it. She had a great season. But it had me pumped up to go against her. Plus, they are the defending champs. So, it was definitely a positive statement to come out and beat them." But Lehigh could never find the punch line to that opening statement. Their crisp defensive play behind Dawson in game one vanished behind Stephanie Howell in their middle game of the day. Colgate jumped on top 3-0 after 1 1/2 innings with the help of two un earned runs, and Lehigh never recovered. The Mountain Hawks stranded two on base in the first, wasted a lead- off double by Davon Ortega in the third and never really challenged McGoff, who finished with a six-hitter. Lehigh seemed to be back on track in the rematch with Holy Cross when Cindy Selverian's RBI single gave the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. But things unraveled quickly in the bottom half of the first when two errors paved the way to two Crusader runs. That was followed by three more miscues in the second. Of the five runs yielded by sophomore pitcher Emily Deia, just two were earned. "Lehigh's got an excellent team, but just a couple of breaks in this second game turned it around," said Holy Cross Head Coach Bob Neville, whose team improved to 23-22. "They had played an excellent first game with no mistakes, did what they had to do and scored when they had to score. "We didn't really change anything against them the second time. We just tried to do what we did all year long and that's get the lead-off hitters on and move them along for the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 hitters to drive them in." The No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 hitters — Jamie Olenoski, Jen Jenkins and Jen Ruggiero — combined for five hits and five RBIs. The Crusaders' first game nemesis. Dawson, relieved Deia with two out in the bottom of the sec-, ond and shut down Holy Cross the rest of the way. But the damage had been done. Lehigh could only scrap back for one run in the seventh against Grosch, who was simply as tough as she needed to be in posting her 19th win of the season. "We played our best game of the year in that first Holy Cross game," said disappointed Lehigh Head Coach Fran Troyan, whose team finished 21- 30. "We played great defense and Joelle pitched great to beat the pitcher of the year." "Then after that, I don't know what happened. We had four errors against Colgate and six errors against Holy Cross. We gave them the games. The kids battled, but we couldn't scrape enough runs together to compensate for the miscues. What hurts is that we feel we beat ourselves." -Keith Groller The Morning Call Women take third; men are fifth at PL Championships It had been a long time — the 1996 Patriot League Indoor Championships to be exact — since the women's team had beaten Lafayette in a league championship meet. But Coach Matt Utesch's squad put an end to its Leopard losing streak last weekend, outscoring its arch-rivals 116-113 and taking third place at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship at the U.S. Military Academy's Shea Stadium. "I was very happy with the women," Utesch said. "I'm very excited about beating Lafayette." Senior Kori Shafer-Krzesicki, one of five women's team members who was around the last time the Mountain Hawks defeated the Leopards, was awed by their performance. "This is the best I've seen us compete as a team in four years," Shafer-Krzesicki said. The Hawks were led by junior Tara Santoroski, who was a winner in the 100-meter high hurdles (HH) and the pole vault, in which she tied a personal record by clearing the bar at 10 feet, 6 inches. She was named Female Athlete of the Meet for her efforts. "She definitely deserved it," Utesch said. "She's a stud. She was committed and dedicated all year long." Santoroski also scored for the team by placing fifth in the 400 intermediate hurdles (IH). She was a member of the 4x100 team that set a school record and came in second, and the fourth-place 4x400 team. Junior Allison Merkle also stood out over the weekend. She took the top prize in the high jump, captured a second in the 100 HH and ran the first leg of the 4x100 team. "She (Merkle) had an amazing race (in the 100 HH)," Santoroski said. "She surprised everyone in the league." Merkle's strong performance, as well as that of a Lehigh freshman, was important in keeping Lafayette's Carrie Strong, one of the league's top athletes, in check. "The meet largely came down to Carrie and Allison," Utesch said. "Allison beat her in the high jump and beat her in the high hurdles. (Freshman) Suzanna Klingensmith beat her in the javelin. We shut her down pretty well." Klingensmith had a personal best in the javelin and finished second. "A freshman coming in and being in the top two is outstanding," Utesch said. Senior Amanda Sage was another winner for the Hawks, finishing her career by claiming first in the discus. She showed her throwing versatility by coming in second in the shot put and third in the hammer. "She's Ms. Consistency," Utesch said. "She owns all the school records. She had an incredible two days." Besides Merkle, another Allison had an excellent meet. Junior Allison Sheniak was second in the 100, fourth in the 200 and the anchor of both the 4x100 and 4x400 teams. "She's (Sheniak) been a little bit injured (stress fracture) all year long," Utesch said. "She was the clear leader in the 100 at the 95-meter mark. They had to go to hundred-thousandths of a second to break the tie (in the 100). She got leaned a little bit. "She ran a great leg in the 4x100 that pulled us into second place. She's our secret weapon," he said. While the women finally overcame Lafayette, the men fell short, finishing with 67 points to the Leopards' 77. The 67 points were good for fourth place in the league. Utesch has a similar explanation for one team's success against Lafayette and the other's failure. "I don't think (the) Lafayette (women) faltered, we just beat them," he said. "The same thing with the men. (Lafayette) just beat us." Senior Charlie Tier was the men's top performer, finishing second in the 110 HH and fifth in the 400 IH. "Charlie had a great meet," Utesch said. "He ran outstanding in the 110 hurdles. It was totally unexpected. He snuck in and scored, which was great." Junior Brian Schellati capped an outstanding season by taking third in the 400 and sixth in the 200. Freshman Rob Black opened some eyes in the 3,000 steeplechase with a third-place finish. The season is not over for six members of the women's team, who qualified for the ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Championships May 22-23 at George Mason Universxity. They are Santoroski, Merkle, Sheniak, Sage, Klingensmith and junior Katie Spain, who came in fourth in the discus and fifth in the hammer. --Mickey Brown '02 Sports Editior Brown & White 1. The UMBC Offense proved too quick for the Mountain Hawks as it handed Lehigh its second worst loss of the season 11 -5. UMBC outscored Lehigh 7-0 in the first two quarters of the game. Lehigh's Brendan Moore '01 scored the team's first goal in the third quarter, and junior midfielder Doug McKerns '00 led the squad with two of the team's five goals. On last Wednesday, the team traveled to Villanova, and Lehigh fell 9-7 to the Wildcats. Lehigh finished the season with 7-6,4-1 records, and claimed its first-ever Patriot League crown.
