Top 25 men's basketball or football programs? Campus enrollment of 20,000 or greater? National reputations for academic and athletics excellence? All factual statements, but not what we're looking for. Actually, the NCAA Division I monoliths listed above all found themselves competing against Lehigh University this past weekend. The overachieving Mountain Hawks, who coincidentally boast a Top 25 football program and a national reputation for academic and athletics excellence as well, sparred with these and other elite programs in one of the most aggressive weekend scheduling feats in school history. Both the men's soccer team and volleyball team had to battle Hurricane Floyd en route to play their nationally-ranked opponents, with Floyd gaining a decisive victory. The 27th-ranked men's soccer team cancelled its flight to North Carolina on Thursday, but departed on ■ Friday for a weekend of play against 24th-ranked University of North Carolina and regionally- ranked UNC Greensboro. The volleyball team traveled to Knoxville, Tennessee to get a firsthand look at SEC competition as they faced the Lady Volunteers in the first round of the Ibyota Invitational on Friday. The University of Kansas and Eastern Michigan University also participated. The Lehigh men's and women's cross country teams, off to a combined 7-1 start on the young 1999 season, competed in the 21st Annual Spiked Shoe Invitational at Penn State, against the host Nittany Lions and and a 20-team field which included na- tionally-ranked Georgetown and Michigan. The men's golf team participated in the Georgetown Hoya Invitational at the Lansdowne Conference Resort in Leesburg, Virginia. Never ones to shy from top- notch competition, Lehigh University teams annually challenge themselves against the nation's top athletic and academic institutions. More of the same is expected this winter, as evidenced by a quick look at the 1999-2000 tentative wrestling and men's and women's basketball schedules. Lehigh's nationally- ranked wrestling team boasts a schedule dotted with national title contenders, including a November 21 home date with rival Penn State. The men's basketball will spar with Penn State, Pepperdine and the University of San Diego this season and the women's basketball team faces Tulane and West Virginia.
