Former Lehigh wrestler and successful developer and entrepreneur Larry White '64 has c immitted a total of $1.5 mil- 1 on endowed funding for con- t nued support of the head wres- ' t.ing coach position at Lehigh. 'i he commitment is through the Lawrence White Lehigh Wrestling Trust. "Larry has been a long-time supporter of Lehigh Wrestling and amateur wrestling generally," Lehigh Director of Athletics Joe Sterrett said. "Larry's gift preserves and secures the generous commitments the University has historically made to the wrestling program and provides the Head Wrestling Coach with both financial stability and financial flexibility in developing and sustaining a nationally distinctive program." "Wrestling has played an important role in my life and en- turing that Lehigh Wrestling sustains its contributions to Lehigh wrestlers, the Lehigh community, and to the sport is something I was eager to support," White said. "1 am pleased and proud that I can help to ensure a funding commitment for Lehigh Wrestling that is commensurate with the positive impact of the program." For his generosity and commit merit to the preservation and enhancement of Lehigh Wres- the Head Wrestling Coach will be known in perpetuity as "The Lawrence White Head Coach of Wrestling." Two other Lehigh wrestling supporters also made substantial contributions to the endowment program. John Harmon '59 and Philip Rauch '33 contributed to the initial scholarship program and once again stepped lorward to make additional contributions. For their leadership and generosity, the Assistant Wrestling Coach position will be named in perpetuity, the "Harrnon-Rauch Assistant ('oach of Wrestling." "John Harmon and Philip Rauch provided gifts that, inspired others to believe that one day the entire wrestling program might be endowed," Sterrett said. "Each has been a long-time supporter of the wrestling program and each has helped to bring special distinction to the program." The announcement, of these gifts is the latest in a series of extraordinary support for the program. On March 22, 1994 a fund raising committee chaired by Al Lewis '54 announced that if had reached its goal of raising $3.8 million to provide an endowment that permanently supported scholarship aid in the wrestling program. This successful campaign, in addition to existing endowments supporting financial aid for scholar-athletes in wrestling, resulted in establishing one of the very few fully endowed scholarship programs in for any sport. Stambaugh has now thrown the football 9,196 yards during his four-year career. A 1999 Walter Payton Award candidate, Stambaugh ranks third in NCAA Division I-AA in passing efficiency. Lehigh's Career Passing Leaders Phil Stambaugh (9,196 yds) Marty Horn (9,120) Kim McQuilken (6,996) Glenn Kempa (6,674) S. Semptimphelter (6,669) The longest winning streak in Division I came to an end on Saturday afternoon as No. 27 Colgate upset No. 9 Lehigh by the score of 28-24 at Andy Kerr Stadium in front of 6,228 fans. This was the first regular-season loss for Lehigh since 1997 when it lost to Delaware by a 24-19 margin. The Mountain Hawks dropped to 8-1 overall and 3-1 in the league while Colgate improved to 8-1 and 3-1. Lehigh stormed to an early lead, taking advantage of three early turnovers by the Red Raiders. Colgate fumbled on two straight drives and Lehigh was able to convert both into touch downs. The first came on a two- yard run by Ronald Jean and the second came on a ten-yard pass from Phil Stambaugh to tight end Bruce Peltzer. On Colgate's next possession, Ian Eason intercepted a Ryan Vena pass to give the Mountain Hawks excellent field possession. The Colgate defense held strong, however, and Lehigh was forced to settle for a field goal. Colgate would strike twice in the second quarter and Lehigh was not able to muster any additional points before the half. Colgate's first score came on a 13-yard run by Randall Joseph to put Colgate within ten points. Colgate then blocked a Lehigh field goal attempt and marched down the field for their second touchdown of the game that came on a 23-yard pass from Ryan Vena to Jason Mattes. Colgate missed the extra point and went into the locker room down 17-13 at the half. Lehigh opened the second half with a nine-play, 60-yard drive that ended on a 14-yard pass from Phil Stambaugh to Josh Snyder. During the drive, Lehigh performed like the ninth-ranked team that it is, but its most impressive drive of the afternoon would also be its last.
