While in the sunshine state, the team played eight games and fell to 3-7 on the season. The team is scheduled to play St. Jospeh's at 3 p.m. on the Goodman Campus on Thursday. The squad will play two games at Manhattan on Saturday at noon and will be back home on Sunday to host Wagner in two games at noon. Results from the week 3-7-99 vs. Florida Tech, 13-4 L 3-7-99 vs. Thomas More, 6-5 W 3-8-99 vs. Long Island, 12-9 L 3-9-99 vs. Central Florida, 9-5 L 3-10-99 vs. Long Island, 9-8 L 3-11-99 vs. BethuneCookman, 0-6L 3-12-99 vs. SUNY Cortland, 8-6 L Joe Ryan Senior tri-captain John Fowler will help lead Lehigh on the offense and defense this season. Men's lax expects to improve While the 1998 season was filled with frustation as the Mountain Hawks lost four games by three goals or less, what it did prove is that the Lehigh program is a deep one, making prospects for this season very exciting. Senior Patriot League First Team member John Fowler (11 goals and 13 assists) will provide the leadership and playmaking that head coach John McCloskey will need in the midfield. Fowler is solid both offensively and defensively. He will get help from junior Doug McKerns (14 goals and 5 assists) who is a strong inside player with good size and strength and he will be counted on to lead the Lehigh scoring attack. The loss of two of the school's all-time greatest scorers, Mark Duncan (32 goals and 9 assists) and Ian MacGilvray (23 goals and 14 assists) will still be difficult to overcome. Others McCloskey will be counting on include freshman Christian Castellani, who is a big, strong crease attackman, who will help out immediately. Senior John Seidel is another middle captain with good speed and dodging ability. Senior Brian Houle won the team's scholar-athlete award and will round out this senior middle line up. Sophmore Brandon Wenk (9 goals and 3 assists) is a good cutter and smart midfielder. Sophmore John Steele has great speed and also plays on the mad-down unit. Freshman middie David Cohen will also see time. Senior Scott Kamin is one of the team's top defensemen. Senior captain Brian Kelly is a solid crease defenseman with great leadership skills. Junior defenseman Ethan Marsh plays with a lot of heart and pride. Freshman Tim Gosser, the Philadelphia Player-of-the-Year, is a, tough one-on-one defender with good clearing skills. Junior Todd Schreiner (9.10 goals against average) is a seasoned goalie with great quickness and a nice outlet pass. Coach McCloskey began to upgrade the schedule last year and once again this year the Mountain Hawks are scheduled to play some of the top teams in the country. With memories of an 11-4 record just two years ago, this gritty and hard-working program is poised to return to that level. After defeating Air Force (8-3) in its season opener on February 25, the Mountain Hawks have dropped two games against Radford on March 6 (11-10) and on Friday against Butler (10-5) in Orlando, FL. Lehigh's next game is Sunday at Penn State at 2:30 p.m. Women's lax looks to rebuild after losing 8 starters There are many new faces this season as the women's lacrosse team, which finished fourth in the Patriot League (8-4 overall and 1-3 league) last season, looks to rebuild after losing eight of last season's 12 starters to graduation. Players lost to graduation include Jessica Schmidt, Elizabeth Brodbeck and Carly Lynch. Schmidt, a 1997 All-Patriot League team member, will be missed on the defensive side of the game, while Brodbeck, one of last season's scoring leaders will be missed on the offensive end. Lynch, a First Team Regional All-American team member and holds Lehigh's second best save percentage record (.584), will be hard to replace in the goalkeeper position. While the team has some talented, young players, head coach Jackie Keeley will look to her upperclasswomen for their leadership skills on and off the field. "We have a lot of talent and potential in our younger players," coach Keeley said. "It'll be a matter of having our upperclassmen emerge as leaders in both the classroom and on the playing field." Returning as the Mountain Hawks attack leaders are juniors Christina Eberhart and Patrice McNichol. Last season, Eberhart was fourth on the team in scoring. She finished the season with 12 goals and one assist for 13 points. McNichol will have her chance this season to improve on her seven goals and five assists from last season. Newcomers Lisa Harrington and Hillary Batcha may get their shot this season to score some points for the Lehigh offense. In midfield are senior Molly Burckhardt and junior Patrice McNichol, each of whom started all twelve of last season's games. Hoping to add some of their skills in the middle are freshmen Kristin Strohm, Kristin McGrath, Sarah Halpren-Ruder, Jen Jancuska and Mary Kurry. "This season our defense will be aggressive, and we will take more risks," coach Keeley added. "We have players who are ready to face the challenge." The Lehigh defensive unit will be led by juniors Bethanne Houck and Stephanie Henry along with sophomores Dorothy Super and Meredith Clark. First year defenders Vicki Fishback and Robin Neumann will add more depth. "I'm excited to have a 'fresh- look' on the field and we'll try to play an uptempo style of attack looking for fast break opportunities," Coach Keeley said. The Mountain Hawks opened the 1999 season at Georgetown, on Saturday. Lehigh was defeated 19-3 by the #10 nationally ranked Hoyas. Lehigh will host LaSalle on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. and St. Joseph's on Sunday at 1 p.m on the Goodman Campus.
