Junior pitcher Chris Frey (2-1) notched his second win of the season. Sunday's doubleheader match-up was postponed until Monday afternoon, where the Mids improved its league record after .a two game sweep over the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh managed just two runs on the day compared to Navy'sl2. Lehigh returns to the field on Thursday against Marist at 3 p.m. on the Goodman Campus. The team travels to Easton on Saturday for a Patriot League doubleheader against Lafayette (3-18, 0-8). With the win, Lehigh takes over first place in the league with a perfect 3-0 record. The Mountain Hawks' victory was the team's first-ever over Army since the league's inception in 1991. The 13 point offensive attack was the most points scored by Lehigh this season. While the Cadets outshot the Brown and White 49-35, this was the first time this season that the Mountain Hawk squad was led in scoring by four individuals including Christian Castellani, Tim McWilliams, Scott Reynolds and John Fowler, who each netted two goals. On the defense, junior goalie Todd Schreiner earned his third consectutive Patriot League Player- of-the-Week honor. The Bala Cynwyd, PA native made 25 saves in the Lehigh victory and posted a .735 save percentage. Since March 27, the Mountain Hawks have won four consecutive games including a win over league foe Bucknell (8-3), Holy Cross (11- 7), Mount Saint Mary's (12-4) and Army (13-9). Lehigh returns to the turf on Saturday at the Virginia Military Institute at 1 p.m. The Mountain Hawks' next league game pits Lehigh against arch-rival Lafayette on next Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. on the Goodman Campus. Congratulations to Lehigh Hall of Fame recipients The Lehigh University Athletics Parternship will host the Seventh Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony for the newest members of the Lehigh Univeristy Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, May 8. The event will be held in Rathbone Hall (Asa Packer Campus) at 6:30 p.m. A reception will be hosted in the Penske Hall of Fame in Taylor Gym at 5 p.m. Being inducted into the Hall of Fame this year are Murray H. Goodman '48, Dr. William C. Hittinger '44, Walter R. Okeson 1896 and Philip Rauch '33. The cost for the event is $40 per person or $75 per couple. For more information and reservations, please contact the Athletics Partnership Office at (610) 758-4301by April 30. Ken White Lehigh head coach Greg Strobel will help lead the U.S. Olympic team to gold. LU's Strobel named tri-head coach for the 'OO Olympics USA Wrestling has selected Lehigh University's Greg Strobel, Oklahoma's John Smith, and retired Dan Gable, the winner of more NCAA team titles than any other coach as tri-head coaches for the 2000 U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team. The other finalist candidates for the freestyle Olympic coaching positions were Mark Manning of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Joe Seay of Perry, Okla. Each of the candidates were interviewed by the Freestyle Coach Selection Committee by teleconference in late March. USA Wrestling's selections must be formally approved by the U.S. Olympic Committee's International Games Preparation Committee. The coaches of the 2000 Olympic team will also serve as the co-head coaches for the 1999 U.S. Freestyle World Team, which will compete in Ankara, Turkey, on October 8-11. Strobel served as the assistant coach of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, which claimed five medals, including three individual champions. He was the head coach of the 1994 U.S. Goodwill Games team, which featured two individual gold medalists. He was a co-coach of the 1997 U.S. World Cup team that won the team title and made history by winning every bout in the gold- medal match against Russia. He was assistant coach of the 1995 U.S. World team, which claimed the World team title and featured four champions. Strobel also served as head coach for the 1997 U.S. Junior World team. He is currently the head coach at Lehigh one of the traditional Eastern wrestling powers. He worked as the head coach of the national champion Team Foxcatcher club for a number of years. He served nine years as National Teams Director for USA Wrestling. Strobel was also an assistant coach at Oregon State Univ. He was a talented freestyle wrestler, and won two NCAA titles for Oregon State. Strobel originally hails from Scapoose, Ore. Smith served as the head coach of the 1998 U.S. Freestyle World team, which placed third in the World Championships, held in Tehran, Iran. He was also the head coach of the 1998 U.S. Goodwill Games team, which captured the team title and featured three individual gold medalists. He was a co-coach of the 1997 U.S. World Cup team that won the team title and made history by winning every bout in the gold-medal match against Russia. Smith is currently the head coach at Oklahoma State Univ., one of the most successful Division I wrestling programs in history. He led the Cowboys to the 1994 NCAA team title and second place at the 1998 NCAA Championships. As an athlete, Smith was considered by many the best freestyle wrestler in U.S. history. He claimed gold medals at the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games, and won four World gold medals (1987, 1989, 1990, 1991). His six straight World-level titles is unprecedented. He also won titles at the Pan American Games, Goodwill Games and World Cup. Smith was a two-time NCAA champion for Oklahoma State, and originally hails from Del City, Okla. Gable served as the head coach of the 1980 and 1984 U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling teams. The 1980 team was unable to participate in the Moscow Olympics due to the U.S. boycott of the Games. The 1984 U.S. Olympic team dominated the Games, winning seven gold medals and two silver medals. Gable also served as the head coach of five U.S. World teams (1977-79, 1983 and 1994). He coached 10 U.S. World Cup teams, as well as the 1986 U.S. Goodwill Games team. He is considered the mo it successful college coach of all time, setting numerous career records as the head coach for the University of Iowa. His Iowa teams won 15 NCAA team titles during his 21-year career, including a consecutive nine in a row from 1976- 86. Gable retired from college coaching after winning the 1997 NCAA team title, with a record number of team points. Gable was a 1972 Olympic gold medalist and 1971 World champion as an athlete, as well as a two-time NCAA champion for Iowa State. Gable originally hails from Waterloo, Iowa. Lehigh-Holy Cross The Mountain Hawks went 3-1 over the weekend against preseason favorite Holy Cross. With the victories, Lehigh improves 15-17,7-3 and steals the league's #1 spot from the Crusaders. Freshman Stephanie Howell pitched a shutout in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday as the Mountain Hawks ran over the Crusaders 11-0. Holy Cross managed five hits and racked up two errors on the afternoon. Junior secondbaseman Jessica Roche knocked in three RBI's for the victorious Lehigh squad. On [~~ Sunday, the team played in raw | conditions but pulled off a perfect sweep over the Purple and I White. In the second game of the day, the Lehigh defense held strong and Holy Cross | was only able to score one run. Leftfielder Bonnie Hoffman and designated hitter Stephanie Howell led the team with two RBI's apiece. The Mountain Hawks travel to Lewisburg, PA on Saturday for a league doubleheader against Bucknell beginning at 1 p.m. On Sunday, the doubleheader is scheduled | to start at noon. An Environmental Science Major with a 3.36 grade point average, she finished second in both the one and three meters diving competition at the league championships. Filo earned Lehigh's second best one-meter performance with 237.15 points at Holy Cross on November 18,1997. She also is a member of the Dean's List, COACH (Community Outreach by Athletes Who Care About Helping) and the 1997-98 Winter-Spring Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. In order to be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete award, a student athlete must be at least a sophomore and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or better. Women's Lacrosse The Lehigh lacrosse team went 0-2 over the weekend as it loses a heart- breaker to league foe Bucknell 8-9 at the Goodman Campus on last Saturday and was dealt a rotten hand at #6 nationally-ranked Penn State on last Sunday as the Nittany Lions defeated Lehigh 23-6. In the latest Patriot League Poll (4-12-99) the Mountain Hawks (1-2) are tied with Holy Cross (1-2) for the third spot in the league race, and Colgate (3-0) and Lafayette (3-0) are each tied for the top spot. The Mountain Hawks will face off against Holy Cross on Saturday at noon in Worcester and will return to the Lehigh Valley on April 20 against Lafavette at 3:30 p.m. in Easton.
