Endier hauled in Lehigh's second touchdown of the afternoon, a 12-yard strike from QB Phil Stambaugh When rivals play, records and pre-game predictions fly out the window. Such was the case on Saturday afternoon as heavily-favored Lehigh scored 14 first-half points, then held on to defeat rival Lafayette, 14-12, before a sell-out crowd of 16,000 at Goodman Stadium in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. With the win, Lehigh improved to 10- 1 on the season and earned an at-large bid to the 1999 NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship. The Mountain Hawks will spar with Hofstra University on Saturday, November 27 at 12:00 noon at Hofstra Stadium in Hempstead, New York. Lehigh also won a share of the 1999 Patriot League championship title, becoming the first team to repeat as champion since Holy Cross did so in 1990 and 1991. Colgate earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship by virtue of its 28-24 win over Lehigh on November 6, and will face Illinois State in the first round. Should both Patriot League teams advance past the first round, they would meet in the second round. In Saturday's nail-biter, Lehigh senior tailback Ronald Jean rushed 37 times for 183 yards on the overcast afternoon and was voted Most Valuable Player of the Lehigh-Lafayette game for the second consecutive season. Lehigh looked sharp in the first quarter, scoring on a 36- yard pass play from senior QB Phil Stambaugh to senior WR Kody Fedorcha at the 11:34 mark in the first quarter. Lehigh ended 19 years of frustration against the Nittany Lions in capturing its first home dual meet victory since 1981. More impressively, Lehigh managed this feat despite the crucial loss of two tri-captains: Ryan Bernholz, who suffered a knee injury that may keep him out for six weeks or more; and Travis Doto, sidelined by a skin infection. When Lehigh senior Mark Dufresne stepped out on the mat for his bout, the score was tied 16-16. Dufresne put on a seasoned and workmanlike display, drilling PSU's Mark Becks. The most significant win came from sophomore Shawn Laughlin who won a stalemate over lOth-ranked Lion Mark Janus. After two double warnings, the score was 1-1 after one, before the two exchanged escapes and Janus was nailed for stalling in the third period. Trailing 3-2, Janus went for the winning takedown, but it was called off, happening several seconds after the buzzer. Local native Chris Vitale, wrestling for All-American Bernholz, won a big match at 165 lbs., defeating Penn State's Nate Wachter. Number four ranked Dave Esposito (149) looked impressive with a powerful win, as did number fifteen ranked Rob Rohn. Lehigh will next compete in the Desert Duals at Arizona State on November 26.
