'99 Fan Schedules and Results: See page 7 Volume 13, Issue 4 SovM/buntairieer Lehigh University Athletics Weekly Stay connected with Lehigh Athletics: Website: www.lehlgh.edu/~lnspo Hot Line: (610) 758-LULU Tickets: (610) 7LU-GAME September 28,1999 Lehigh Lights Up Princeton Princeton lit up the stadium, but Lehigh lit up the scoreboard, en route to a 31-0 rout of the Tigers before more than 20,000 fans at Princeton Stadium last Saturday evening. Lehigh used the first night game in the 130 years of Princeton football to showcase its considerable talent and answer the test that head coach Kevin Higgins said the Tigers would present. Lehigh's third straight win to start the season and 15th straight regular-season victory dating back to 1997 extended the nation's longest winning streak among Division I-A and I-AA schools. But the victory also showed just how good this year's team really is. "We passed the test so far," Higgins said. "It was a great win for our program and a chance to make history with it being Princeton's first night game." "Basically our plan was to make a statement," junior linebacker Bubba Young explained. "We wanted to set the tone, to find an identity for our defense." Led by junior safety Matt Andrews, who had two interceptions, Lehigh's defense was again spectacular as it held the Tigers to only 19 net yards rushing and 11 first downs. None of the 15th ranked Mountain Hawk opponents have yet to reach the 100-yard rushing mark )Jus season. By contrast, senior Ronald Jean has done so in each of the first three games. Against Princeton he rushed for 137 yards on a career-high 33 carries. Three of his rushes resulted in touchdowns. The first, a nifty 10-yard burst, gave Lehigh a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. His second touchdown was a three-yard scamper in the third quarter. Jean's final run was from two yards out and concluded the Lehigh scoring in the fourth quarter. Senior quarterback Phil Stambaugh, a 1999 Walter Payton Award candidate, conducted a clinic on executing the perfect offense. With several scouts in attendance, including one from the Philadelphia Eagles, Stambaugh showed that he has the ability to pick apart any defense. "He's a very, very good forward passer," Princeton head coach Steve Tosches said. "It's my 15th year here and I've seen some very good ones over the years. He's right up there with some of the best." Stambaugh completed 19-of-26 passes for 267 yards and one touch- down pass - a 12-yard bullet to sophomore wide receiver Josh Snyder. And for the third time this season Stambaugh completed at least 70% of his passes (73.0%) a statistic that will undoubtedly allow him to remain as the nation's top- rated quarterback in Division I-AA. Ten of Stambaugh's passes flew to senior wide receiver Kody Fedorcha, who garnered a career- high 123 yards in receiving. For the second consecutive year Lehigh is off to a 3-0 start. Lehigh attempts to extend its regular-season winning streak at home against Columbia on Saturday, October 2. Lehigh Sweeps Lafayette Stacy Rallo *02 The Lehigh men's cross country team broke a six-year losing streak to rival Lafayette and the women's team snapped a 4-year losing skein to the Leopards with a pair of victories at Lafayette's Metzgar Fields on Saturday. The men defeated Lafayette, 24-33, and the women triumphed, 28-31. Lehigh senior Steve Gourley paced the hungry Lehigh men's pack, placing first overall. "It is really nice to see a smile on Steve Gourley's face in particular," said Lehigh Head Coach Deb Utesch, "and on the faces of everyone on both the men's and women's teams." - Lehigh sophomore Dan Contreras, sophomore Martin Bures and freshman Alex L'Heureax placed seocnd, sixth and seventh, respectively, for the Mountain Hawks. The young Lehigh women's team ran a tremendous race in outdistancing their Lafayette counterparts. Freshman Lucinda Hull placed second overall, followed by freshman Edann Brady (5th), Steve Gourley "00 sophomore Stacy Rallo (6th) and junior Colleen Glass (7th). "I thought coming into each race that depth would be a real advantage for us and clearly that is what enabled us to get a pair of wins,"said Utesch. "On the men's side Steve is running really relaxed and as well as he ever has. For the women, they are so young and yet have really rose to the occasion." Both teams return to action on October 9, as Lehigh hosts the prestigious Paul Short Invitational.
