These teams include men's and women's track/field, golf, men's and women's swimming/diving, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's lacrosse, baseball, cheerleading and softball. At the banquet, each coach presented a team award for Athlete of the Year, Scholar-Athlete and the Coaches' Award to their athletes. The Athlete of the Year is awarded to the team member who makes the most outstanding athletic contribution to the accomplishment of the team. The Scholar Athlete Award is awarded to the student- athlete who in the eyes of his/her teammates exemplifies the ideal of the scholar- athlete. The Coaches'Award is presented to the student- athlete who made significant contributions to the well being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement, or special leadership. Nick Martucci's summer job working at the Philadelphia Eagles training camp at Lehigh University helped him land a job in the National Football League. Martucci's job isn't permanent just yet and it isn't with the Eagles, but at least the Division I-AA All- American defensive end from Lehigh by way of Pius X High School has his foot in the door. Martucci signed a free agent contract with the Oakland Raiders on Tuesday and will head west later this month. NFL rules forbid college players from attending any workouts with their pro teams until after their graduation dates. The 6-foot-5, 255- pound Martucci graduates from Lehigh on May 30. "I didn't even work out for the Raiders," said Martucci, who said the Eagles, Baltimore and Jacksonville showed the most interest. But Martucci said the Eagles were honest with him. A call was made to Oakland, where former Philadelphia offensive coordinator Jon Gruden is in his second season as head coach. His offensive coordinator is former Eagles assistant Bill Callahan. Lehigh coach Kevin Higgins followed with a phone call, too, to Gruden, who he worked under during one of the summer camps at Lehigh. Martucci attended the Raiders' mini-camp April 23-25 as an unsigned free agent. "At the first meeting they said they wanted to try me at defensive tackle," Martucci said. "I was really surprised, because I was only 255 pounds. They could put me wherever, I didn't care. Some plays I got beat up at tackle. Even though we were only in helments, it was full speed." The Raiders made Martucci an offer two weeks ago. He then weighed another overture from the Eagles before telling his agent to finish negotiations with Oakland. Martucci's competition includes returning starting ends Lance Johnstone (6-4, 250) and Sam Harris (6-6, 280), both of Temple, and draft choices Tony Bryant (6-3, 270) of Florida State, chosen in the second round, and Roderick Coleman (6-1, 255) of East Carolina, a fifth rounder who is more suited to play outside linebacker. The Raiders released backup DE Aundrey Bruce, the former number one pick of the Falcons, in February but also drafted DT Daren Yancey, a 6-6, 312 pounder from Brigham Young. They have signed no other free agent defensive ends. Martucci was the Patriot League's Defensive Player-of-the Year last season and led the league in sacks the past two years. He started every game of his career at Lehigh and helped the Mountain Hawks to a 12-1 record and to the second round of the I-AA playoffs last fall. "It's a long shot," said Martucci of his chances of making the Oakland roster, but if it doesn't work out at least I can say I was a professional football player for the summer." -Corky Blake The Express-Times Lehigh announces its 1999-00 wrestling recruits Three wrestlers from the Lehigh Valley, and three state champions highlight the incoming class of wrestling recruits for Lehigh University.
