Mittendorf is the league's all- Jtime leading scorer with 42 [.goals and 20 assists for 104 1 points. The All-American candidate broke the league's single-game scoring record with four goals in a game against Manhattan in September. He is a three-time All-Patriot League Team member. ' With Mittendorf in the starting lineup, Lehigh has won 32 games over the past three seasons. He currently ranks fifth in the nation in scoring and first in goals per game. Joe Ryan For a team that lost 61-28 to Colgate on the road last year, the Lehigh football team was sure Saturday's meeting at home against the Red Raiders would be different. "This week of practice was unbelievable," Lehigh head coach Kevin Higgins said. "I never saw a group of guys who were more confident. They were extremely loose. They believed they can be successful, and they believed they were well-prepared." "And I also think last year's game provided motivation." Lehigh spotted Colgate 14 points in the first nine minutes and then ran off 35 unanswered points to shred the defending Patriot League champion 41-22 before 13,432 fans at Goodman Stadium. The inspiring win improves Lehigh to 9-0 overall-matching the record posted by the unbeaten 1950 team-and enables them to take control of the Patriot League race. Lehigh, ranked 22nd in Division I-AA, is 4-0 and can clinch a share of its third league title with a win over Bucknell on Saturday. Colgate (6-3) dropped to 3-1 and is tied for second with Lafayette. The loss also snapped Colgate's nine-game league winning streak. Lehigh played with the pride and poise of of a championship team, despite its rocky start. Colgate's Jesse Boyd intercepted Phil Stambaugh's third pass of the game and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown. Lehigh's frustration mounted two minutes later when Stambaugh's pass intended for Kody Fedorcha was low and bounced off a Colgate rusher and into the arms of Brandon Tinson at the Lehigh 38. Four plays later, fullback Tim Lavoie barreled into the end zone for a 14-0 lead. "After the way we started out I figured something good had to happen; it reminded me a lot of last year's Lafayette game," said Stambaugh, recalling Lehigh's comeback from a 21-0 deficit against the Leopards at Goodman Stadium. But that's what happened again. Stambaugh tried to connect with Fedorcha on a slant pattern. Colgate nose tackle Neil Gomez, dropping back into pass coverage, nearly separated Fedorcha from his life. The ball flew up in the air and Boyd snatched his second interception. "Colgate not getting up three scores was huge," Higgins said, "because we could still mix up the run and pass." Which is what Lehigh did on its first possession of the second quarter. Lehigh put together a 15-play, 80-yard drive with fullback Brett Snyder scoring on a 4-yard pass from Stambaugh. Defensive end Nick Martucci tipped a Vena pass into the hands of linebacker Brendan Moore, who returned it thel9. Four plays later, halfback Ron Jean follwed Snyder through the right guard for a 4-yard score. Jaron Taaffe's PAT made it 14- 14 with 4:41 left until halftime, which suddenly couldn't come soon enough for the Red Raiders. Lehigh's front four began teeing off on Vena, who was repeatedly flushed from the pocket. "We told the guys before the game that if Vena scrambled, we wanted to make him go to the outside and not up the middle," Lehigh's defensive line coach Donnie Roberts said. A holding penalty set the Red Raiders back 10 yards to their 25; Bryant Appling blitzed to drop Vena for a 7-yard loss, and defensive end Brian Wolovich swarmed Vena for another 3- yard loss. "We ran some twists and were able to get in clean on him on some of the rollouts," Wolovich said. By pushing the Red Raiders back toward their end zone, Lehigh got the ball back at its 47 with 2:31 to go. Brian Baker rushed for 13 yards and Deron Braswell caught a 10-yarder to the Colgate 30. Two plays later, Stambaugh threw a short hitch pattern to Braswell. The ball actually traveled backward, enabling Braswell to step back and throw long to Fedorcha, who scooted behind Colgate's Tinson for the 30-yard TD. Lehigh went to the hitch pattern often in the first half and that set up Braswell's scoring toss. "He has a real nice touch on the pass," Stambaugh said of his latest QB rival. "I'm happy for Deron. You don't expect him to make that play." Martucci and Wolovich finished out the half by sacking Vena. The offense took it from there, studding the second-half kickoff into the end zone with a 13-play, 75-yard march. Jean scored on an 11-yard dash around the left end. Baker went out with a foot injury midway through the drive after catching an 8-yard pass. Jean was up to the task the rest of the way, with an assist from Snyder, who came into the game with just three carries for 18 yards. Lehigh didn't need Jean and Snyder just yet to chew up the clock. Colgate halfback Randall Joseph fumbled at his 46 and Sam Brinley recovered for Lehigh. Stambaugh immediately went up top and made the 46- yard scoring strike to Braswell look easy. With 8:06 still to play in the third quarter, Lehigh was leading 35-14. "Those two long touchdowns hurt us, especially the one after the turnover," Colgate coach Dick Biddle said. A 56-yard kickoff return by Phil Bowmanand a 15-yard face mask penalty on Lehigh kicker Matt Andrade, putting the ball at the Lehigh 18, provided the Red Raider with a glimmer of hope. On fourth down from the 14, Vena zipped a pass to all- league WR Corey Hill on a slant pattern for the score. Vena scrambled for the two-point conversion, cutting the deficit to 35- 22. Lehigh went three-and-out on offense, and Colgate mounted its best drive of the game. But after earning a first down at Lehigh's 7, the Red Raiders managed just three yards on three plays. On fourth down, Biddle eschewed the chip shot field goal and opted for six points. "I felt like we needed a touchdown at that point and not the field goal," Biddle said. That's the way we've been playing for three years." -Cory Blake-Express Times Lehigh 1 Drexel 3 uSfl Friday Hwll Vollevball (18-13) Lehigh 3 Delaware State 0 Hl^l Lehigh 3 Lafayette 0 Ki^l Saturday Football (9-0) Lehigh 41 Colgate 22 Men's Swimming/Diving (2-0) Lehigh 146 Fordham 91 Women's Swimming/Diving (2-0) Lehigh 149 Fordham 88 Vollevball (20-13) Lehigh 3 Long Island 0 Lehigh 3 Rider 2 Men's Soccer (13-4-1) Lehigh 2 Colgate 1 Men's Basketball (1-0) Lehigh 96 Team Fokus 86 Sunday Men's Soccer (13-5-1) Lehigh 0 Lafayette 2 Friday, November 13- Women's Basketball vs. Belarussia (under 22 National I Team), 5:30 pm Men's Basketball vs. Vermont, 7:30 pm Saturday, November 14- Football vs. Bucknell, 12:30 pm| Men's and Women's Swimming at Colgate, 2 pm Volleyball at George Mason, 7 pm Men's and Women's Cross1 Country: District II at Annapolis, MD Field Hockey All- League First Team Kelly Harkins-Sr. Defender Anita Ketty-Sr. Forward K.
