Lehigh played its most dif ficult opponent in front of its biggest crowd of the year, and didn't disappoint as it rolled over Wofford 26-0. Wofford (3-5) was no match for the 8-0 Mountain Hawks (8- 0) who have the best start since the 1950 Lehigh squad. Lehigh dominated both sides of the ball, in front of 12,147 fans at Goodman Stadium Saturday. Lehigh is now one of two undefeated teams in Division I-AA. The other is Southern Conference member Georgia Southern. "We talked about a 'Mirror Game,'" Coach Kevin Higgins said. "When you look in the mirror on Sunday morning you have a chance to evaluate yourself against some of the best players in Division I-AA. "Our defense, in particular, had a great performance. We had a nice package, they executed and flew to the football. They played hard, they played with intensity and it was great to see." The shutout was Lehigh's first since the 1995 season, which was also the last time Lehigh won the Patriot League title. "I didn't think about a shutout until there were five minutes left," sophomore Bryant Appling said. Lehigh's defense actually scored the first points of the day and what turned out to be all Lehigh needed. On first down from Wofford's 7-yard line, defensive end and tri-captain Nick Martucci forced quarterback Travis Wilson to pitch the ball. The ball went past halfhack Will Hunter, who fell on it in the end- zone. It was Lehigh's first safety since a 1990 contest with Holy Cross. Appling, who had his best performance in a Lehigh uniform, had a huge play against Wofford's full back Miles Lane. He stripped the ball from Lane at Lehigh's 31 with 1:30 left in the first half to protect Lehigh's 9-0 lead. He also stopped running back Carl Wright from converting a fourth down attempt late in the third quarter. "I came in telling myself I needed a really big game," he said. "I kept thinking about how I could help the defense." Junior quarterback Phil Stambaugh completed as many passes to himself as the entire Terrier offense. Wofford quarterback Ricky Hagood completed a 13-yard pass to wide receiver Bryan Davis midway through the fourth quarter, which turned out to be Wofford's only completion of the day. The 13-yards allowed was a Goodman Stadium record. "Lehigh is a very good football team, and they are very well coached," Wofford Head Coach Mike Ayres said. "They were 7-0 and felt good about the game. We were struggling and wanted things to happen early, but it didn't." The Terriers did rush for 266 yards, but when they needed crucial yardage Lehigh was there to stop them. Wofford was 0-5 on fourth down conversions and 3- 11 on third down. "By nature of their offense, they just feel that you're not going to stop them on the ground on fourth-and-1 or 2 yards," Higgins said. "We got a couple of fourth and down stops, and they were big emotionally.. We were able to step up in the intensity of our game." Lehigh's offense had made easy work against a defense that sent three lineman and at times a blitzing linebacker. Lehigh was especially effective running the ball. "In the Southern Conference they run the ball a lot, so they are a big a rushing team. They didn't have a lot of moves," senior tri-captain Jon Stiegler said. "We've seen a lot defensively this year, and I know we'll see a lot next week against Colgate." Senior running back Brian Joe Ryan Baker collected 137 yards and ran for a 49-yard touchdown to make it a 19-0 game with 7:53 remaining in the contest. "Brian's speed is a lot different when he has the ball and is heading for the endzone," Higgins said. "Brian senses that this is his last time playing college football. He has a passion I haven't seen since I've been here." Baker, who moved into fifth on Lehigh's all-purpose yards list with over 3,000, said he worked hard in the offseason with speed coach Ed Ruisz and also credits the offensive line and fullback Brett Snyder for blocking for him. "Brett is by far the best blocking full back we've had, since I've been here," Higgins said. Stambaugh, who is ranked seventh nationally, completed 26 of 37 passes for 279 yards. One was a huge 43-yard completion to junior wide receiver Kody Fedorcha, who then scored on a 3-yard pass from Stambaugh in the second quarter. Fedorcha had five catches for 74 yards on the day, second only to senior Deron Braswell who had nine receptions for 76 yards. Stambaugh found nine different receivers, including Fedorcha on a deflected ball, to keep the Terriers defense guessing. "I wanted us to have a chance to control the ball and keep it out of their hands," Ayres said. "They just have too many weapons. I look forward to playing them in 2000." The ultimate test for Lehigh comes next week against Colgate, which is 6-2 overall and also 3-0 in the league. "We're ready for the challenge," Baker said. "Last year [61-28 Red raider victory] wasn't any fun. We have to make up for that." -Jenn Rauch '99 Gblf The five member Lehigh squad finished in 5th place with a score of 665 over two days at the Towson University Invitational held at the Bon Air Country Club. Lehigh's top finishers were John Horutz, senior co-captain from Clarks Summit, PA and Brad Ispass, a freshmen fromOceanside, NY, each finsihed with 164.
